DARK INFERNO ROOK!

gradenko_2000 posted:

The IRL Tannenberg was a happy coincidence of the Russians being disorganized and unrealistic and German communications breaking down at juuust the right moment to push a Korps into an encirclement position that wasn't supposed to happen, and the difficulty in pulling it off is the next great "how do we make the Russians look as incompetent as they need to be to make Barbarossa work?"

I think the big problem with these two events is that they both occurred at the beginning of their wars (counting the East Front as its own thing) which means they have a huge influence on the rest of the conflict (whereas something like Zitadelle everyone just acknowledges isn't going to happen and it doesn't affect the general course of the war too much anyway) and it's hard to picture a situation in which the Germans do better - thus games that don't have something similar happen look "unrealistic" and if you try to counter that by making the Germans powerful enough to get a similar effect, you can overshoot the other way quite easily.

The WWI western front isn't a problem because the Germans taking a bunch of France but getting stopped before Paris is the likely outcome, so it's easy to balance things for that outcome. Likewise with WWII Poland, and WWII France works fine because overpowering the Germans doesn't get them much more than the historical complete victory (maybe a few less losses or similar) so the French errors can be adjusted for by just giving the Germans better troops.

The easiest way around Tannenberg I think is to just lock East Prussia until the end of 1914/start in 1915, but obviously that's not a great solution for something like Commander. Likewise with Barborossa - my personal preference in WWII games is to start around Spring 1942, but that probably wouldn't sell as well since there are so many gamers out there who think that if they ran the German army the logistics would magically work out to let them push an extra 200 miles.

The other thought I've had for key battles like that is to give each player the option to change a battle result - so the Germans would have an option whenever a Russian unit attacked a German unit to automatically have a devastating victory, but they could only use it once and only in 1914 (This could also work for things like the BEF at Mons or the beginning of the 1918 Peace Offensive). That's harder for players to play around and I think does a better job of replicating strange battles like that, but it does have the downside of feeling extremely gamey, which many people probably wouldn't like very much.

It's why I think strategic level wargames should be set in entirely fictional scenario/worlds so they don't get stuck wrapped around this issue.

I really want more post-WW2 era stuff, both real and alternate-history or modern-day. Something along the lines of WinSPMBT, those Tiller games set in central Europe, the Wargame series, etc.

Well, screw you, now you made me want something I can't really have.

That said, if I recall correctly there was an old Warhammer Fantasy game where that was the premise - you managed a mercenary company in the world of Warhammer (which is kiiiiinda like the 30 Years War, if you squint and tilt your head and add Orcs), trying to keep yourself profitable and your forces reasonable strong and taking on missions from various employers. Shadow of the Horned Rat or something, I think? It's really, really dated, though.

It's weird because the WITP dudes don't seem to have a problem with the Dec 8 alternate scenario (except when they're doing a Dec 7 start to NOT attack Pearl Harbor), but then I've only ever seen 2 AARs of the 1942 campaign and the devs won't make a Barbarossa+7 or post-Battle-of-Smolensk starting point either.

In fact they instead made a Nov 1942 start in the last WITE expansion which is even worse from a playability standpoint because (and with no small thanks to the overall engine) it just robs the Axis of even more options and basically forces them to go on the defensive from the first turn to the last.

I remember a Soviet 5 Year Plan simulator/game that was effectively that - you had to balance stuff like foreign imports/exports while the rest of the world hates you, whether starving millions now will impact your labor pool later on, domestic vs military production, etc. When the game ended in 1941 it would tally up a bunch of factors and determine whether or not the Soviet Union manages to beat Germany or not based on how well you were able to industrialize beforehand.

Unfortunately I'm drawing a blank on the name and Google isn't helping.

The real power behind countless overlords

Just finished my first game of Commander: Great War. It's a fun game, thank you everyone who recommended it.

After two years of hard fighting my Entente nations won in 1915. Even on the medium difficulty setting the AI wasn't too bad. It managed to kill most of my Mediterranean fleet because I didn't know cruisers can't hurt battleships, no matter how many you bring. I made several other mistakes and it always managed to punish me for them, costing me several cities I should have held.

The AI was sadly prone to shuffling forces from East Front to West Front and back again, which gave me more breathing room than I should have had. There were several times when my French lines collapsed and I was sure I was going to be overrun, but every time the Germans would pull back and shuffle their air and artillery to the other front.

Amphibious operations were a lot of fun. Neither side had enough troops so we often left our coast lines undefended. Several times I was able to sneak in a lone corps to seize and hold a city, pulling units off the front lines. Since cities don't provide full supply without a land route back to a friendly capitol, that was pretty much the end of amphibious operations. You could stay in full supply by sitting on the coast with a friendly naval unit offshore, but otherwise is was half-supply at best. I have no idea how Germany is supposed to take any British cities.

You don't need to take any cities. The British will surrender if you destroy a large portion of their fleet and the French surrender. I will also play PBEM C:TGW against whoever wants to, it's a great game.

Has anyone played the John Tiller Civil War games on the Android/iPad? I don't know if it's just me but it seems to be missing the "Resolve Assault" button

quote:

I remember being part of those who beta tested this game and it was a pretty good game. I truly enjoyed it but never purchased it because of the Developers completely omitting Canada's Role in WW1 and bunching us up with the British (not even a regiment or High Grade Canadian officer present), while the Yanks who did far less in WW1 (joined the war way after and did not do anything as significant as the Canadians) have a huge presence in the game. The same can be said for Aussies and Kiwis but in WW1, Vimy Ridge, Ypres were historically significant battles that put Canada on the map politically and militarily and released it from the UK's grip, if you want a WW1 game that has significant historical content, not including Canada separately (we even had the second or third largest navy at that time as well) is cheating the history books in my opinion. Will not revisit this entirely as I have already posted this in a previous thread when it was released. Look at the latest "Valiant Hearts" WW1 adventure game, Canada is full present in the story line and yea call me a Patriot as I am proud and honoured to cheer/root for my country.

For those who can look past my reason to boycott this, they will not be disappointed as this is a great war game.

quote:

Again, not meaning to re-open old wounds here but in Canada when we speak of WW1, it is a defining time in our History were more importantly Canada emerged as a new Western Power out of the British Iron Grip and never looked back. So personally and for many Canadians, speaking of WW1 without mentioning Canada's role is an insult to our nation. Understandably the Developers can't do everything and please everyone, but when I see a Yank presence in the game and not even a mention of Canada, it hurts my patriotism, and that is too bad because Commander: The Great War is one heck of a game that I truly enjoyed playing but my principles are far stronger. Unless there is a change in the game, I will stay away, sadly but proudly.

I couldn't find the Ultimate General Gettysburg thread where people were complaining about how ammo and different types of firearms and cannon were not represented in the game.
