The Lumia Icon is a WP8 device and 8.1 is supposed to be released in "Summer 2014", which we're two-thirds of the way through already while Nokia is "testing" Cyan which may or may not be the major WP8 - 8.1 update. Nokia isn't testing it, your carrier is.

http://blogs.windows.com/windows_ph...w-features.aspx Tl;Dr: 8.1 update 1 will be rolling out on the dev preview to include proper app folders, more enterprise stuff, and I guess an improved Xbox music, and Cortana is going to be beta in China (Mandarin only, nicknamed Xiao Na) and the UK, and alpha in Canada, India, and Australia

Glad this is going to be rolling out on the dev preview soon. Though it will probably be while I'm out of the country, but that's a minor annoyance. Question: I don't think Nokia Cyan is released for my phone yet (UK Lumia 820, unlocked). When it comes out, do I need to get off the dev preview to install Cyan, then back on the dev preview to install 8.1 Update 1 when that comes out? Or will Cyan just install while on the dev preview? I think you have to roll back to official 8.0 to get Cyan unless MS comes out with a fix.for the Bitlocker thing.

I have an issue with playing music which is pretty annoying. No matter which app I use for playing it will stop after 30-45 minutes. The only way of preventing this is by not locking the screen. Anyone else have this problem?

I don't either, but I'm guessing it's some kind of beta device or an Android with WP8.1 on it? It has on-screen buttons at the bottom and also a down arrow thing at the left.

Will developer preview 8.1 users get the Cyan update eventually, or do you have to roll back to 8.0?

Does updating to Cyan still require you to downgrade from the 8.1 preview to 8.0? Will you be able to receive Cyan if you update to the 8.1 Update 1 preview or will you have to downgrade first? How well does the backup and recovery system work in restoring apps and app and system settings?

I don't plan on rolling back to 8.0 to get Cyan because it's not even out yet for the 1020. And when it is it's not really game-changing things that'd make it worth me redoing my phone and then going without 8.1 till whenever it gets released. Just about the only Cyan feature I might like now is the Bluetooth LE being enabled so that I can sync with the new fitbit app, but I can wait on that. I'm just going to keep riding the DP until the bitlocker fix and we proceed forward. To further clarify earlier questions, Cyan is the firmware/hardware update portion from Nokia and technically doesn't have anything to do with 8.1. They just usually release a big firmware update (amber, black, etc) at the same time and have some features that go hand in hand with the OS update. The Bluetooth LE is an example, they had to update the firmware to "unlock it" but the OS has to also be able to utilize it. OldPueblo fucked around with this message at 18:24 on Jul 30, 2014 |

redbackground posted:I've downloaded but have only briefly mucked with it. I have noticed that it's impossible to Back Arrow out of the program--it keeps refreshing the main menu & the last chosen category on my Lumia 928. Already know, on my todo list. EDIT: And I think I fixed it. I'll be in the next build, hopefully later tonight. Reason why it was happening was I override the back button so I can handle navigation, but the Windows Phone navigation helper that comes with a default Windows app template also attaches to that function, so I had to get rid of it. Now if you're on the main menu, it will back out as normal. EDIT 2: Another thing I need to fix is selecting a track from the current tracklist after killing the app. It does not fill the background task with the tracklist, so it does not play anything. If you play the last playing song first using the play button on the mini player, THEN select a track, it should work. I'm working on it. Eh, if they keep pumping out a GDR 2 and 3 with more features at this pace (8.1 -> GDR1) 'til end of the year, I might be swayed to get a WP device after all. That and releasing goddamn Office Gemini on WP would give it a lot of sway.

Happy_Misanthrope posted:We'll see. I can barely notice a difference between the app now and the first release with the DP, despite "Performance Enhancements" being listed as a major point for the past 4-5 releases. I have not seen it in the list view, where it takes a five seconds or more for something to actually appear when scrolling. I'm still dumbfounded that they shipped it like that. It's baffling. But they did make changes in terms of how they handle the background audio interacting with the app itself. It's less confused when you close and reopen the app and remembers its state better. --- More Awful Music news: Pushed another update last night. Made more UI changes. When you're playing a song and land on the main menu, it will show the artist picture (if there is one) on the background before showing the background album art. That album art on the main screen is also technically changeable as well, it's tied to "favorite" albums and tracks, which are implemented but I need to finish the UI for showing them. I've also hidden the status bar, so now things like the album and artists views are totally edge to edge. I also fixed some more bugs with the page navigation, where you could get into states of seeing "black" screens (meaning I lost what page you were on). And selecting tracks to play from the current tracklist screen after launching the app should also be working correctly. I think I'm getting to a point where I can actually publish the app fully as an open beta. I want to add a few more things like shuffle and hopefully playlists before then but we'll see how far I get before I say "gently caress it". EDIT: Oh yeah, gotta fix indexing when deleting files . Cyan is rolling out on AT&T 520s at least. I hope when Cortana is ported to more languages, we get to choose languages regardless of region (I don't care if they're alpha); a Cantonese or Vietnamese Cortana would be really cool for my parents and I'd like to muddle through with my terrible Arabic.

I think I'm giving up on WP for now. My Lumia 520 is perfectly fine as a phone, and I'll go so far as to say it's been a great device overall despite being a low end phone, but I'm really tired of being a second class citizen when it comes to apps. It's got a lot of potential though, so I really hope the ecosystem pulls through. I feel bad giving up on it because it's never going to get better if people don't stick with it, but I finally came across some work things I just needed apps for and I couldn't justify sticking with this anymore. Going to hang onto the 520 since I've been writing an app myself. God I love Metro UI

And with iOS you actually at least get apps, if Apple isn't willing to localize something.
