That's possibly it. I estimated 5-10 times on some paperwork as I wasn't keeping a weed journal back in 1998. The civilian in MEPS going over my paperwork told me to put down a number so put down 7. Sigh.

In that case stick to your story. It was seven.

So I scored an 89 on my ASVAB and my line scores qualify me for pretty much anything. And I'm going infantry. Or something else without a clearance depending on what's available, but at least I know worst case I can get infantry. Man, gently caress debt.

I got a 93 on the ASVAB, but found out I couldn't get some stuff waived to do what I thought I wanted to do. After taking a few weeks to think about what I really wanted out of the military, I decided to do infantry. I still think that was the right choice for me. If you want to enlist because you want a home and a paycheck, pick something more comfortable than infantry. If you REALLY want to be infantry then at least do it right and go USMC, nerd.

I'm compiling a list of every MOS that doesn't require a clearance that I'd actually want to do and seeing if literally any of them are available before taking an infantry billet. It's literally my last option after listening to GiP and thinking about it. I'm hoping I can get a job working on Blackhawks, to be serious for a moment. Or really any helicopters.

Does the Army have stuff like X-ray technician? There has to be some halfway decent stuff out there that doesn't require a clearance and isn't combat arms.

Well I legitimately want to work on and potentially fly aircraft as a career. My eyes preclude jets from ever being a thing but I loving love helicopters. If there's a slot open, I was going to go for one of the 15 series mechanical jobs for Blackhawks/Apaches/Kiowas etc and do that. Once my poo poo gets sorted later on down the line I'd be in a decent position to maybe see if I can transition from crew chief to pilot.

I'm no expert, but it seems like anything bad enough to raise a flag for a Secret investigation would have already DQ'd you from enlisting in the first place. Seriously, getting a secret is nothing.

ArbitraryTA posted:So I scored an 89 on my ASVAB and my line scores qualify me for pretty much anything. You're a loving idiot, and here's a real quick version of why: You're assuming the worst case scenario will happen, so you're volunteering for what that worst result could be. You might as well electrocute yourself as a preemptive capital punishment because you might murder someone down the road. loving go for a job you want! Even if it requires a clearance. IT IS NOT UP TO YOUR IDIOT RECRUITER. Best-case scenario: everyone here, who has already done this poo poo, is correct and you get your clearance and a relatively sweet job. Worse-case scenario: you're the unlucky one who doesn't get the clearance, and guess what happens - they reclass you to the loving infantry. If that's what you actually want, then fine (you're still retarded, but whatever). But if it's not what you want, why are you punishing yourself for the next 4+ years? Don't be a pussy. Edit: Ok, we have progress. But I suspect that the Army is the same as the Air Force in this way: if you put down a job that's undermanned or they have a high quota to meet, you're going to get it no matter where it falls on your list. YOUR RECRUITER DOES NOT HAVE YOUR BEST INTERESTS AT HEART. HE IS NOT YOUR FRIEND. HE IS DOING HIS JOB AND YOU ARE A NUMBER. Get used to this. Also, trying to "transition from crew chief to pilot" is easier said than done. It involves going to college, for starters, then competitively being approved for a warrant officer program or OCS and commissioning. But it's doable, I used to know someone going through it. But then his Blackhawk crashed and I got to attend my first active duty funeral, so there's that. Godholio fucked around with this message at 07:12 on Jul 30, 2014 |

So, let me get this right, you're picking a job because you (potentially) cant get a clearance, and you want to eventually fly a bird. I know for the Navy that if you're going to be a pilot you will need a clearance. I can't echo everyone else enough. You're loving stupid for picking a job off what might come to pass, and not what has happened. In other words, you'll fit right in with the majority of the military, have fun.

Either way he's a just continuing the fine tradition of dumb enlisted guys who tell themselves no instead of letting the military deny them. In the AF, it's common for guys who want to re-train into other jobs not even to apply. They tell themselves that everyone else is and they don't have a chance or won't pass the training. Dumb.
