Ooh I thought it looked like a Szpajdel design! Awesome that you got in contact with him. I'm not in a black metal mood right now because it feels weird listening to that in the summer, but I will definitely give your stuff a listen.

Finally got around to listening to the new Panopticon record. I never did check out Kentucky or any of his back catalog for that matter. Worth delving into?

Yes, although if you don't like banjo and tin whistle in your black metal you should probably steer clear. I really like Kentucky and Collapse, but Social Disservices never really clicked with me. On the Subject of Mortality, a compilation of material from various splits, is also really good and lacks the folk instruments if you find them too cheesy.

Zsa Zsa Gabor posted:Don't know if this will interest anyone reading this topic (prolly too geeky): I've been applying some machine learning methods to black metal lyrics. One of the experiments was trying to find a correlation between lyrical themes and records labels, depicted in the graph below. The larger the circle, the higher the percentage of black metal releases by a given label that are assigned to a topic. For example, if we're looking for releases based on "Pain, Sorrow & Suffering", Depressive Illusions is the label to go to. The only thing to go looking for with Depressive Illusions is the most consistently lovely music in the world. No artist with any amount of pride in their music would have that shitshow release 33 CD-Rs of their music. You'll want to listen to this is you want to experience pain, sorrow, and suffering. That's about it. Look at this clown. Most of the poo poo on the label is like this. https://myspace.com/rancidentity/music/song/in-league-with-satan-live-86880479-96328659

Hey, I simply ran a few text mining algorithms over the lyrics and the results came up like that, for those particular labels. It's not an opinion on their (lyrics and record labels) quality or lack thereof. I singled Depressive Illusions out as an example because a huge percentage of lyrics related to them was assigned to a particular topic.

tbh the only release I've listened to this year that could conceivably be called black metal is Hail Spirit Noir - Oi Magoi. I can't find Death anywhere for some reason (maybe because I don't use torrents for my downloading).

drat, this new Botanist track is something special. Really excited for their new LP. Their earlier records were a little too raw for me, but last year's release was excellent and this year's is shaping up to be really nice too. There should be more hammered dulcimer in black metal.

Vediog Svaor do. They're an odd band, though - not totally black metal, more along the lines of Ved Buens Ende or Fleurety. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBix2HruvI4 Oh, and a bunch of prog black bands like Xanthochroid, Janvs and Ne Obliviscaris do.

So, it now appears that Blake Judd has decided NOT to dissolve his band Nachtmystium - just to discontinue touring. “I have actually decided not to end the band. The time I announced that Nachtmystium was no more came after a series of really difficult issues and situations, and I decided it was time for a major change in my personal life. Nachtmystium has dominated just about every aspect of my life and has been extremely consuming of my time. With the touring band lifestyle being what it is, it caused me to get very involved with drugs. I am an addict and have struggled with substance abuse issues for years, but in the last four years or so, it got way out of control and began to ruin my life. I decided that after all the poo poo hit the fan, I needed to get out of the spotlight for a while, get myself some help, and start a new and more normal life. At the time, I really felt like Nachtmystium needed to end for that to happen. Now that I have had a good nine months to clean myself up as far as my drug problem goes, and have regrouped mentally and made a new life for myself, I’ve been able to really think about what I’m doing and where I’m going with music. Due to the immense amount of feedback I have received from fans on our Facebook page telling me how sad they were that I was bringing the band to an end, I decided that ending the band was not what needed to happen in order to live a new life. I just reprioritized how the band is going to be present in my life, and I have also decided that I will no longer be touring at all. But just hanging up the name, all the momentum and success I’ve had with the band doesn’t seem logical to me now that I have had time to do everything I’ve mentioned. I don’t really care what people say or think about my decision to continue on with the band after announcing that it was coming to an end. I’m sure some people will talk poo poo, but that is nothing new for me or this band. I’m looking at The World We Left Behind as the end of a chapter in Nachtmystium’s history. What I do next will be something new, theme-wise and musically. I’m not sure what direction I will take, but it’s definitely going to be something new and different.” - Blake Judd interview with Metal Mayhem Underground

Good for him on sobering up, I'm exctited that they're back. I dig they're sound. On an unrelated note, what do you guys all think of Vanhelga? The whole "we support and encourage self harm and all our art is just people cutting themselves" gimmick is a little silly but the actual sound I seriously dig. Their use of piano really fits in well with the rest of the background, makes it melodic and raw/grainy at the same time.

The other band I've been digging lately is Nocturnal Depression, maybe best known because one of their guitarists has a hand deformity. He also plays in Make A Change...Kill Yourself. I recently picked up "When the Prozac No Longer Helps" by Niklas Kvarforth (of Shining). I have to say Shining is my favorite black metal band, and after reading the lyrics in english it makes me appreciate the music a lot more. Has anyone seen Shining live? How were they?
