The movie Lawless was a lot better than I expected. I have to be honest and say I am a sucker for "gangster" movies set in the 20-30's but I put this one off for so long because it stars Shia Labeouf. Anyways it's about some backwoods bootleggers during the prohibition era and some new sheriff comes into town and tries to clean it up. Definitely worth checking out. Anyone have any recommendations based on that?

I love Miller's Crossing so much, it's still my favourite Coen Bros. The dialog and slang is fantastic. And Leo, oh my god that scene.

Last I checked the Netflix version was a terrible quality 4:3 P&S though, did that change? The movie is gorgeous and don't watch the terrible version that was on there if it hasn't been fixed.

fake edit: never mind it's not up for streaming anyway!

Yeah that scene too.. Gawd the whole movie is just so watchable and quotable!

Also Sam Raimi has a cameo in Hudsucker Proxy! Just as one of silhouettes in the "creative dept", apparently (not that you can really tell). Plus he co-wrote it

poo poo, I forgot that, and he's the goddamn 2nd unit director. God was Raimi the loving poo poo once. I can't decide if Oz is a sad sellout or a clever subversive something or other repackage of AOD with a less charismatic star that lacked the range to pull off both hero and villain.

Anybody else really want something like a thoughtful meditation on aging from Raimi/Tappert/Campbell? I keep wondering what their version of This is 40 would be like, although it would have Lucy Lawless as the wife and thus automatically watchable.

So yeah, see Miller's Crossing when it's back on streaming. In the meantime Blood Simple is streaming on Encore and it's just loving terrific.

The Last Will & Testament Of Rosalind Leigh is up for streaming and is extremely good. It has bad ratings on Netflix and IMDB and I think that's maybe because people went in looking for a straightforward Syfy style ghost/horror thing, but instead got a deliberately paced, strange meditation on regret and obsession. It's creepy and sad and I think it's a really rewarding film, so long as you go in with the right mindset.

I have to endorse InstantWatcher. I sorted things by Rotten Tomatoes ratings, and saw Gideon's Army towards the top. Gideon being a defendant that couldn't afford a defense attorney in his criminal trial, defended himself, and got convicted; then appealed to the supreme court, who decided that every defendant deserves legal representation.

It's a great look at 2-3 public defenders who are overworked, and it delves into their struggles. Examples being: seemingly innocent defendants that have little chance of staying out of prison, and guilty psychopaths that the attorneys are forced to defend with as much effort as they can muster. It's a documentary that almost plays out like a Law and Order episode. I loved it.

Galaxy Of Terror and Battle Beyond the Stars are two fantastic Roger Corman classics. There are a few Deathstalker films and Quest for the Mighty Sword if you want fantasy schlock. A lot of the older Asylum films are up, as is Gor, the film to which mst3k classic Outlaw is a sequel. Troll 2 is a perennial favorite. Also The Stuff, Night of the Comet, and BMX Bandits. Knight Club may be my favorite bad movie I found on netlix one night, it's got Lou Diamond Phillips, a ragtag crew of club bouncers, and that Gary Busey lookalike kid, being all high on coke. It's terribly fun to pick apart, and I think they stole the script from DC Cab in its entirety.

Also ALL of the newer (post-reality show) Steven Seagal movies are legit terrible and still fun to watch and pick apart - they do amazing camerawork, fight choreographing, costuming, and posing, to hide his enormous gut.

If you check my post history in this thread I mention a LOT of bad movies. I had a roommate who has a fetish for really crappy low-budget Japanese and Italian stuff although I don't actually enjoy watching most of that stuff - if there's a giant (obviously rubber as it's flopping around) chainsaw or chaingun arm and it's bending all over the place during scenes, I usually won't watch it for long. When the costume bits that're supposedly metal are flopping around like a big dildo, I lose interest quickly.

Zwabu posted:

I felt that The Outpost was a genuinely good movie despite its 5.5-6/10 on IMDB. The two sequels got rather crazy and ended up way more like Frankenstein's Army, but the first one's a legit, tense movie about some mercs who take up a corporate contract and then all hell breaks loose on them and they have to figure out what the gently caress is going on and how to survive. There aren't any zombots or w/e they're called in The Outpost, although the second starts to go that direction.

The Outpost is not found footage (I don't recall the sequels being found footage either), but the two sequels explain A LOT about how the hell everything ended up that way, although they went pretty far into crazy territory with the second, the third explains where all the "Frankenstein's Army" type poo poo came from. It had some similarities to Devil's Pass but again, isn't found footage, and there's no big nazi robots that look like the Big Daddies from Bioshock, chasing people around.

Then there's The Guard Post, a korean horror film about some korean military investigative/MP personnel who show up at a post along (iirc) the DMZ, and find one surviving, insane young soldier, covered in blood and wielding an axe, and then have to figure out exactly what the gently caress was going on and why, before it kills them all. I thought that it was rather good.

moller posted:

Meatball Machine might be the best Machine Girl style Japanese movie, it's really amazingly low budget and the monster costumes ludicrous.

It's a southern-flavor story (which actually takes place in PA and northern NJ) about a dude (Christian Bale) whose brother (Casey Affleck) goes missing after getting into some shady stuff with Woody Harrelson. The Killing season 4 premiers tomorrow on Instant. The first two seasons were (rightfully) criticized for being pretty slow and taking two seasons to solve the murder mystery, but overall I thought it was pretty good- sort of a slower Twin Peaks without the supernatural stuff and humor. And then it was cancelled. Then it was brought back for season 3, which had Peter Sarsgaard and Elias Koteas in it and was really good. Then it was cancelled again.

So hopefully s4 is as good as 3 :v:

I would go to the opposite with Out of the Furnace. It has an amazing cast on every facet and then the story doesn't actually go anywhere. It's rare however I was like "wait, that's it?! Where's there other 30-60 minutes of this story?"

Serious letdown for what I'd been left to expect. Slow, quiet, but most egregiously it was too short to take advantage of that amazing cast.

Neflix has Forensic Files Collection, select episodes from Season 11 and maybe other seasons. Definitely the best crime/documentary show of all time. It's like CSI without the drama, or stupid speculation based on a minimum of evidence. Actually I used to believe that CSI was more fiction than fact with regards to the capabilities of forensic science but turns out it's pretty accurate. Had me starting to wonder how any murder goes unsolved then I watched L.A. Homicide which brought me back to reality.

http://www.netflix.com/WiMovie/70198116?trkid=13641790

Amazon Prime has The Best of Forensic Files, select episodes from each season.

Fair warning, the early episodes pull no punches and show victims of homicide, sometimes rape, some are children, and it isn't nice to see. No matter how grisly or realistic movies or television attempt to be, I've never seen one that captured visually the messy ugliness of real violent crime. Maybe it's just mental. Also, the best episodes are those where they prove someone innocent.
