Well, what kinds of subjects would you folks want to hear more of? About 90% of the episodes we do now are selections put together by listeners.

Honestly, looking at the submitted content spreadsheet, most of them look great. The only one I'd be worried about is Creatrix Tiara, and that's just because it seems like it'd be really easy to slide from "let's laugh at these insufferable non-binary people" to "let's laugh at these non-binary people" and I really don't want to deal with that.

Anyway, as for your actual question, it feels like it's time for everyone to get together and laugh at some bad fanfiction. Just something nice and light and drama-free. No matter what you think about the last page, it's been a while since we've had one.

I'd love to hear more episodes on bad fiction and poetry, they're some of my favorites. Though I might be a tad biased. :v:

The Braking Bad: Allens Attack short is the first thing I link when introducing people to the podcast, since it's a handy length, gets right to the point, and is hilarious.

If you want to help do a bad fiction one, there's a thread on ballp.it right now where you can contribute. I started out making a document for the FPlus that was 'worst of Thunderdome' but it kinda expanded out to 'worst of SA' and I think we could probably take it further. If you've got any bad internet fiction they haven't done, link it in the google doc below and I'll try to clean the whole thing up into a coherent fplus doc at some point.

I looked through the submitted content table, just to make sure that I was right. My favorite recent flavor of Stupid Internet isn't even in there.

I think it's now my duty to put together a Sovereign Citizen document. Question is where to start in looking for the stupid people. I know I want to include segments of the 140-page document by an actual judge debunking their entire platform, and I'm sure there are some good court transcripts around, but I don't know if there's just a whole bloody forum of people trading Legal Wizarding Tips.

The issue with Benny (and a lot of 'dome writing) is that it's only funny if you consider the poster's history elsewhere in the forums, and that would take too long to delve into. Without the attendant thread about parents and comics, there's no context for "and then I went home and killed my entire family."

A lot of the bad writing is also more 'boring beige cliche' rather than the outright bombastic awful that would make an entertaining read. There's very little hair streaming like wet lasagna in a fan and a lot of "The big barbarian swung his sword at the orc and said 'yarg' and the orc died".

That's why I'm expanding the net to all terrible internet fiction. That doc is editable by anybody, so if you think of something and want to add it, please do. My goal is to have far too much stuff on there, so I can go through and pick the bestworst entries. I don't think they've done anything from My Immortal, and I've been looking around poetry sites trying to pull up the best emo poetry. Poetry Free-For-All is pretty good, because the userbase are pretty smart and cutting, but they get a lot of new signups who think they're THE NEXT POETRY GENIUS and who get super mad when they get torn out. Their forum for deleted/locked threads is full of good content, though the admins clear it out every so often and some of my favourite ego blowups are long gone.

EDIT: jesus took me forever digging through the archives to find this: Jim, Jaime and Porthos.

Between this and the offbeat marriage episode, it seems that some people can be a tad too defensive about topics they relate to on some level. And that's fine and dandy, but it changes how you're approaching the material.

Terrible fanfiction? I'd never write that.
Obscure fetish? Nope, I gently caress' em normal.
Idiotic questions? I'm fairly smart!
Themed wedding / sustaining my passion via contributions? Hmm, it has it's upsides I think.

And then that's the ballgame, sympathy for the subject makes it harder to laugh about them.

Until you realize the thing has good aspects of course, but the readers have more fun mocking poo poo than playing devil's advocate, so don't worry about it!

You'll probably want to read this thread first.

Finding content for that is problematic because a lot of it is either really dense, really repetitive, or relies on a lot of knowledge of law. Your best bet would be to go to the source of the pure-strain crazy and actually find places where these types congregate, and skim for the good stuff. Then mix that in with some choice quotes from judges.

Well, I'm certainly glad I wasn't the only one to feel this episode wasn't as strong as usual. Like, most people I know who use Patreon are freelancer journalists trying to make a buck, like Susie Cagle or Cara Ellison, and I think those are the people who make a good use of the platform. It's definitely funny to laugh at the furry pornographers raking in the big bucks for lovely webcomics, but that happens pretty much everywhere on the internet, and it doesn't make the rest of the site less bad.

I guess it felt like there was a little too much bitterness from the crew.

Also, I support doing more stuff on absolutely terrible people.

I support someone on Patreon and I don't feel like this episode is unfair. Patreon just seems so much more blatant than Kickstarter or IndieGoGo, especially with the pay by the comic campaigns and how none of them had even vaguely worthwhile rewards.

I think Patreon's episode is sort of the odd one out of the 'Give Me Money' series, but not in a way that's unfunny. It's just a different type of funny.

The other crowdfunding episodes have all been mainly about stupid people with bad ideas. They slot in with the Idea Wiki, AHHHA, and FilmProposals as people who're just laughably dumb. There's a smaller subsection of people who aren't as stupid, but make up for it by being insufferable, but it's mostly the Idiot Show.

Patreon's balance is the other way around. There's some idiots, of course, but the main focus is on people with slightly more of a clue, but not enough to not be irritating. We're in the 'pretentious, self-absorbed people who don't get how the world works' corner, with NaNoWriMo, Review Rinse Repeat and Troper Tales. I personally don't like those kinds of episodes as much, mostly because these people give me douchechills, but it's not an inherently invalid angle.

It's not like I've got no worries...
But I'll be fine.
Honestly, I think my biggest problem with this was that there wasn't even really anything to get mad about. It's not even like Kickstarter or Indiegogo or gofundme or anything like that because of the way it works. Patreon is payments in small increments, and patrons can choose to stop giving the people money any time they want if they feel that the person no longer deserves their money, or that they aren't doing what they said they would. With those other croudfunding things it's so easy to just take the money and run, and there's something to get mad at there. Patreon doesn't have that. Like, the crux of this episode was "HOW DARE YOU ASK PEOPLE TO GIVE YOU MONEY FOR A HOBBY" and, like, there's nothing actually wrong with that? It's not like they're stealing money or anything, and people can stop giving at any time.

And I can also see how it might have been more of a "Look at these ridiculous projects that people want to do!" episode but even then, Patreon is way more down to earth than other croudfunding sites. It's just people wanting to make comics or videos or whatever, and I see those all the time.

Portaxx getting so outraged at that cat comic lady getting "36 DOLLARS A MONTH? DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD I HAD TO WORK TO GET AN ANIMATION JOB!" Was really the only thing in the episode that was funny to me, but not for the intended reason I think.

It was especially disappointing being a followup to the previous episode which was basically gold the entire way through, from poop.computer to poop.computer

For something more constructive, I agree that maybe it's time to go back to the well of super bad fanfic or really nutso people/groups. Those episodes

This sums up my feelings pretty well. Quitting your job to live off Patreon money? Dumb. Making comics about your monster waifu? Dumb. Accepting money to do a thing you like? Fine.

I said it before, but being open to something doesn't mean you feel entitled to it. The episode just feels like berating people for having confidence in their work. "How dare you even conceive that this might be worth money to someone?"

By this logic if you want them to go back to fanfics and all how dare you make fun of these people just writing what they like they're not hurting anyone writing what they like on a fanfic site or whatever.

edit: What I'm saying is if you believe doing a dumb thing earnestly absolves it from mockery I legit kinda don't understand what podcast you've listened to before this if you're suddenly bothered.

Well, in the wrap-up portion at the end they pretty much poo poo on Patreon as a concept in general, so I get where people are coming from.
