Paul Scholes had the best football brain I’d ever seen in a kid. Let’s face it. Paul Scholes is in a class of its own.

Scholes was absolute quality technically but everyone started reassessing him as this incredible genius when he announced his retirement and it all got a bit much. He was mediocre at too many things to get talked about at the same level of Zidane, or quite a few other players. I guess he was one of those players that spent most of the 2000s being quietly underrated that it flipped and everyone starting romanticising him as the modest, quiet, one-club man who was the key to it all, and forgetting about him being a dirty little bastard who starting getting caught in posession a lot towards the tail end. He actually hit a really good patch the year before he retired though tbf.

Hoops posted:I was definitely more sensitive to it as a Liverpool fan who really, really hates that generation of Manchester United, but the hyperbole that greeted his retirement was bizarre. This is a classic "not saying he wasn't good, just saying he's overrated" conversation that happen in every sport ever. I hope to god the conversation moves on before Ninpo checks this thread. He is less wildly overrated than Gerrard tbf.

I haven't spent the entire summer hearing pundits say that Shawcross is one of the best players in England currently even though he directly cost Stoke the title through being a past it shitelord who is out of his depth in the position he now plays.
