It doesn't really matter though because the only distinctions that matter are: Flags>>>A select group of important O6's>>>>>>>>>>>everyone else

You're both sort of right. As was said, in the other services company grade is O1-03, field grade is O-4 to O-6. In the Navy O1-O4 is technically considered company grade, with O5-O6 considered field grade. Just look at who gets the fancy stuff on their combination covers. ;)

Fake edit: DoD website says the Navy actually terms O1-O3 junior grade and O-4-O-6 mid-grade. So all O1-O3 are actually JGs! And your distinctions I think mainly apply to the surface Navy although I will concede there is some truth to it. ;) I still think my fancy stuff on cover is the trump though. And that's also how someone once explained it to me. :spergin:

You can gently caress it tho'.

He'll do great. After a tumultuous series of breakups and getting back together during DEP, he will ship to boot after confessing his eternal love for her.

She will bang his best friend the next week, the second best the week after. Somewhere after the third week a dear John letter will arrive and he will try to drink the cleaner that can't kill you.

The psych hold unit will clear him once he stops trying to off himself. She will come to the graduation and promise to never do it again.

They will get back together. She will put those "my boyfriend is a sailor" stickers on her poo poo car. They will turn into "I love my sailor husband" and "spouse is the hardest job in the navy" after the a school marriage for bah money.

The baby is born shortly after, she balloons up to 500lbs and he bangs some e2 fresh from boot.

Divorce 1 occurs.

18 years and 2 more divorces with 8-12 legitimate and illegitimate kids later he Is the MCPON. He looks back on the shambles that were supposed to be the prime of his life, takes a swig of military special whiskey, puts on his best fake smile, and addresses a crowd of sailors graduating boot camp.

This is easily the first time in 4 years working in Main Propulsion that i've gotten more then a scratch; I'd say I have a fair idea of what, and what not should be touched as far as machinery goes.

For the record, C school has 4 engines that we students are about to work on; 2 generators, and 2 main engines. I was merely demonstrating the amount of force in a main engine verse the generator, and got pinched. It's machinery, metal, electricity, and all sorts of fun things that could potentially hurt *anyone*, but today I was that guy.

Luckily I ended up with nothing more then a deep cut; lesson learned, let's carry on.

Well, like what specifically? I read the IG report, and I've followed what everybody had to say on Sailorbob...but the IG report left a *lot* of things unanswered that SB questioned.

1) Where the gently caress was the Chief's mess/CMC?
2) Where the gently caress was the rest of the wardroom. I get that your average DIVO (1st or 2nd tour) might not have truly appreciated WTF was going on, or been to terrified as young DIVOs to say anything...but what about the LDOs and the Department Heads? The gently caress were they doing during all of this? And really, "enjoying their enhanced sense of power" or however you put it seems like a bullshit cop-out. Maybe one or two of them got off and the added autonomy they fell into, but the rest of them had to be thinking "what the gently caress is going on?" How did not one of them say anything? Even if it was just mentioning it to a spouse, someone on another ship, etc.
3) ISIC, how the gently caress did ISIC not take issue with the ship not having a qualified XO for so long?
4) In the same vein, how did PERS raise the red flag when the ship went without an XO for so long (coordinated move on the CO's part? even so, some paper-pusher at Millington had to have noticed)
4) The admiral that was onboard for a period of time (I don't remember how long?) he even commented that it was weird that the CO was in his in-port cabin as opposed to his at-sea cabin. Fair enough, if he thought something was fishy, why wouldn't he have hit up ISIC or CSG or whomever?

I'm not superstitious, but frankly I think that ship is cursed. I was in Yoko when Graf was CO of COWPENS and I knew people on that ship...it literally had *the* worst retention rate in the entire Navy in 2010-2011... I heard stories of Chiefs and JOs - grown-rear end men, breaking down into tears after been harassed/assaulted by Graf. She seriously left an indelible mark on that ship. Also, why was it allowed be independently deploy so soon after a port-swap?

That CO and CHENG were hosed up, but a LOT of other people were completely hosed up as well to allow something like that to happen.

As me how I ended up taking 2 months terminal and still selling back 60 days of leave. This was before using NSIPS, so I'd bring my leave chit back to N1 at the end of the period and some how it never showed up on my LES. Who knows what happened to it, not my job to police admin. Perhaps going out drinking with YN1 and PSC helped, but who knows man.

Considering you could have been minus 4 digits rather easily, you got pretty lucky.

EDIT: also if you got a deep cut across your palm, holy hell are you in for a world of fun. Enjoy the feeling as barely flexing/moving your palm almost causes the stitches to open up. I have to challenge this because people have been driving me batty with this lately.

Caveat: Yes, your time off is more valuable than whatever pittance they assign to it when you sell leave. I realize it doesn't make any sense to sell the leave back at $20 a day or whatever they give you for them in 99% of cases.

THAT SAID,
How the gently caress are you getting less money if you use all of your leave days? That's backwards. You will draw your full pay and entitlements right up until the end of your contract either way - but if you use all of your leave days, you don't get any money for selling them back. If you're in some kind of crazy situation where you would rather be at work right up until your last day taking no leave at all, you will in fact get a bigger final pay. Stop spreading this folksy nonsensical bullshit.

The only way you make more money by taking more terminal leave is if you can start another job earlier because of it, and effectively get two paychecks for the period of your leave. Otherwise, you're getting paid the same until you leave active duty, be it working time or leave time.

Terminal leave doesn't extend your time on active duty, though, it only moves your last day of work to the left--not your end of active service to the right--you still get your BAH for the same period. If your EAOS is 1 Sep, taking 60 days of terminal won't magically extend that to 1 Nov, you'll just stop working on 1 Jul instead and keep getting paid until 1 Sep, earning the same pay either way from Jul to Sep.

The exception is when retiring, when your term of active duty would end at different times if you took terminal or not, which is what causes the confusion. Always take terminal for retirement.

For me for instance, I work in a job that is pretty easy going with their hours as long as the work is done. It doesn't make sense for me to take terminal because I can do everything I need to do anyway, and will be moving out of the area at separation. Meanwhile I'll get however many days of basic pay (probably 45) which is a significant chunk of change on top prior to moving.
