Going to guess that's the issue, although if it's being picked up on the Xbox music app, mine should also pick it up.(I only tested the SD card on a Windows Phone Emulator, but it did get it.) When the index button is grayed out, that means it is indexing and a progress bar on the top of the app should appear.

Oh hey I forgot if I mentioned, but I remembered that a week or two ago you were asking about people who downloaded the Awful Music app: I haven't actually managed to get it to work on my Lumia 925. Out of 6 or so attempts to load the app, it crashed while loading the Artists list 4 times. Of the remaining 2 times, only 1 managed to make the audio play.

I have only one song on my phone (an mp3 I converted from youtube, with no artist or album info). It plays fine on the music app. I also have 8 or 9 podcasts.

Awful Music seemed unable to find the song; it only shows podcasts. Maybe that's because Awful Music is reliant on artist or album information to show the song?

Literally the only reason to use XBox Music is an abject unwillingness to use another player, and nothing else. And while the "official" app selection may not be able to rival other platforms, there are incredible alternatives to so many, most surpassing what can be found elsewhere. Anyone saying otherwise simply hasn't put the effort in to find what they need, has unrealistic expectations, or has a pathological need to parrot asinine platitudes.

I don't think it's an unrealistic expectation to expect the same first party apps that everyone else has without crossing your fingers in hope that someone like Rudy Huyn gets around to making an app for it. Do you remember how long it took to get full featured versions of things like Instagram, Vine, and Snapchat? And in many cases unless a game hits Flappy Bird levels of popularity and cloning we won't get them at all.

And don't get me started on video streaming apps. Cox and Directv are available in my area but I don't get to use their streaming video services because they'll never bother to make an app for WP. Subscribed to NFL preseason, gotta watch those games on my Surface. WatchESPN? No way. If say a premium movie channel comes out with a streaming app like HBOgo I don't even bother to check to see if WP is supported because you know it won't be.

Die hard fans devoted to the platform maybe be okay with constantly looking for third party solutions or workarounds all the time, but it doesn't really bode well for the platform and the 96% of people who aren't using windows phones certainly aren't into it.

It looks for the artist and album metadata. If it's not there, it won't add it. I did have an "Unknown Artist" and "Unknown Album" placeholder catch all before, but I took it out. I figured I would add it back in once I added the ability to edit the meta data, so either the app or the user could fix it. Maybe I should add it back in...

If you were trying to play a DRM song from Xbox Music, then that could be why it was not playing. Otherwise it's the background audio process loving up. For the parsing, it (of course) should never crash. if it blows up on parsing an artist or album, it should just go to the next one.. I'm swamped with work, so I can't fix this stuff now. But next week I should have more time. I'll look into it again. Sorry guys :sigh:

Oh, I have no intention of EVER editing the metadata on this file, nor on the 10k+ songs on my media server. This song on my phone has a filename (which is all I ever want to use for it). The music on my media server is all organized by folder and filename (which is all I ever want to use for it).

Actually, I did write a script to concatenate my folders+pathnames and store them in the "genre" tag, just so that iTunes was able to display+order them properly. That's because iTunes also lacked the ability to recognize my folder+filename structure.

So my mom's Icon with the DP I think has the latest 8.1 update, but still says Nokia Black. Has Cyan still not been pushed out to Icons, or is being on the DP causing the update to not show up?

Also she has been having a hell of a time with the Camera. After using it for a while, she will go to use it after waking the phone again, and the screen will be black for either the Camera itself, or the Home Screen (so no buttons work except the task manager will come up, showing the home screen has a black preview, and you cannot close it of course.) Only a reboot fixes this but it is becoming a giant pain in the rear end, especially since the camera is like 90% of what she uses this phone for.

Sad how there were never issues with her HTC Trophy and Windows Phone 7.

Interesting, it doesn't happen on iOS though.

It only bugs me so much because I spend a lot of time on crowded tubes and cycling. I would love to make quick notes when my phone is in my pocket but if I do then the screen goes berserk from being constantly touched.

I just got my windows phone, a Nokia Lumia 520 because /g/ recommended it. It's really good, so smooth and stable. But Endomondo is missing a few features, I was going to go pro when I got my new phone but there is no point until they add back those features. So much better than on the unstable piece of poo poo I was using before. The other run tracking apps are worse or exactly the same, so I think i'll just stick with Endomondo to keep tracking my stats. The say they are working on it, but we'll see.

Windows phone is slowly but steadily taking ground, and after using it for a few days I can see why, Live-tiles are actually quite nice, the whole interface isn't instantly intuitive but after working it out it's really easy and works very well. I haven't opted in to the developer thing to get 8.1 yet, but even with just windows 8 i'm pretty happy with this phone. not just for the OS, the phone itself is good, the touch screen just feels so drat good even compared to high cost recent galaxys, and the camera button is great. I would have liked a flash and a bit more texture to the back of the phone but hey, it was cheap. i literally spent more on running clothes at kmart and target last week.

I think the only thing really holding Windows phones back is the lack of apps, but as it gets more apps, more users ect, it'll enter a kind of critical mass and be a properly mainstream phone os and more app companies will look at dual platform development.

Also, how much better is WP 8.1 compared to WP 8, enough to bugger around and get it?

This would be nice, but we've been waiting for that with Windows Phone since 2010. You shouldn't hold your breath. If the core OS or hardware is a nice enough improvement to you over iOS/Android options, to outweigh the app lack, then stick with it and be happy. But counting on the app situation to reach parity with iOS/Android anytime soon is just going to leave you frustrated and disappointed.

I just want a fully featured endomondo app really. It kept crashing on the Huawei Ascend y200 i got for $2 because it was stuck on startup (i just did a factory reset and it was perfect) or else i would have kept using that laggy old phone.

Hey, has anybody else notice that a lot of people doing "windows phone vs android" vids on youtube tend to use the 520 and compare it so some high end phone? I saw things like Galaxs S5's compared to the 520. The fairest test i saw was the 520 vs the moto g, which is still twice the price of the 520. The 520 is ABSURD value, i got mine around $90 from dick smith, around $105 including the next day delivery (aka standard delivery)

And yes, triple platform, gotta get those iDolahs. [joke about iphone users being gay with comment about gay people having large amounts of disposable income]

The app situation improves continuously though, this thread just loves to be incredibly depressed about things. As long as you don't have unrealistic expectations things are rapidly improving. Here the situation has gotten especially good about all tiny consultant-built apps like for bus tickets, online banking, etc. That's down to portable frameworks to a great extent though, so big-name mobie apps that need to be built fresh are a more troublesome situation. The official Facebook client being bad being particularly troubling.

Endomondo has said they are committed to continuously developing the app, and with the marketshare going up it would make a lot of sense for them to make this fully featured and get some people getting the pro package. Two months ago they last updated it, but they updated it the month before that as well, so it's still ongoing.

I'm really curious about whether the 'app gap' is smaller in Asian countries (India/China/Vietnam/etc) where WindowsPhone has a larger market share (especially the 520). From what I've seen in China, if a popular service hasn't released their own official app, at least one unofficial app exists.

Though, at least with the Chinese apps I've used, the WindowsPhone versions aren't quite as good as the versions on other platforms.
Example - Camera360: The iPhone version comes with 3x as many filters, supports IAP of additional filters, and drains less battery. But, at least a WindowsPhone version exists at all.

On that, when i use the term "critical mass" i mean the snowballing effect.

Think of a strategy game, at the start you make barely enough money to survive, but as time goes on and you invest in infrastructure and economy, you have more money, it gets bigger and bigger faster and faster. the more fully featured apps windows phone has, the more people will use it. the more people use windows phone the more fully featured apps will be made for it. I actually wonder if the last piece of that puzzle was universal apps. Now companies may realize their apps will work not just on windows phone but also on desktops and windows tablets, so they have more motivation I'm guessing. It's that wider audience they've been waiting for.

We'll see. The Windows 8 app store is even worse than Windows Phone, so I'm not so confident. You'd think two years would be enough time for companies to realize they would (theoretically) have a huge audience if they put out a Windows 8 app, and yet here we are. Of course, more than 3/4 of Windows computers are on XP or 7, and Windows 8 adoption is slower than Vista's was, so the whole supposed advantage of universal apps (wider audience) isn't really much of an advantage and probably won't be for another couple years.

Maybe also Xamarin, allowing you to make them universal across iOS+Android (oh and hey Windows too is easy enough if you're using Xamarin). Using the draw that C# is easier and more productive than Java or ObjectiveC.

I'm sorry but it will only get worse not better. Android is 85% and climbing iOS users spend far more money per user than other platforms. Windows phone is about 2.7% and falling quickly with users that spend near no money on average.

In the early days of wp7 there was a lot of excitement and MS was throwing out tons of money/directly sponsoring apps. This has stopped. I don't like it any more than anyone in this thread but there will be basically no more WP 8 apps. Some multiplatform stuff but there is no point in WP8 Dev. Most wp8 devices are pretty low end and there is pretty heavy fragmentation in the platform.

Android/iOS each offer so much more to a developer that WP has basically become a joke among developers.

It's actually really good already; the primary issue that I have with it is that when I hit the quote button, make a post, and then submit the post, the thread jumps straight to my post. I know the regular forums to this, but in a web browser you can open the quote in a new tab; in an app I'd prefer to be returned to the post I was quoting, that way I can quote something to make a post, and then continue reading the thread from where I left off.

The only other thing is that it would be nice to have an option for white text on a black background; but that is cosmetic and far from essential.

Because 8.1 Cyan is buggy as hell. On some devices with Cyan some process bugs out and CPU gets stuck on a loop, battery consumption is higher than what some chargers can supply. And device basically cooks itself to death.

Remember Nokia Drive+ back in the 8.0 release days? Same stuff, but it's in firmware so you can't even fix it.
