Specialist Traynor sat at her terminal in the Command Trailer. Behind her Captain Deck stared intently at a holographic map of the battlefield, and spoke with his Lieutenants. The Lieutenants came to him with reports from intelligence operatives like her. Each operative sat at a similar terminal where they observed, advised, and allocated resources for their platoon. Specialist Traynor was angry. She had never felt more useless. In all of her training exercises she had always had the tools she needed to ensure victory for her platoon. She was quick and clever. She was the best. Directing artillery was her art, and she was a master. Give her eyes and resources and she would lay the hate down on the enemy without mercy, and she would direct the love down on her guys without error. But she didn't have jack poo poo for resources, and her guys were dying; or well, they were about to die. Her LT was a spineless piece of poo poo and he wasn't fighting for the attention and resources that her and her platoon needed. On her monitors she saw the drone feed of her platoon lying face down in a ditch under enemy fire. She saw all of the options on her computer screen, and they were all greyed out and unavailable. Dozens of different artillery options and reinforcement requests were all turned off for her and her men. She looked over her shoulder and saw her LT, her representative, standing meekly in line behind other, more persuasive officers; waiting to talk to the Captain. 'Our men are literally going to die because this poo poo-stain can't raise his loving voice.' Traynor turned back to her terminal in disgust and growled. 'gently caress him. I'll find something nobody else is using if I have to shoot illumination night flares into the enemies god drat loving eyes. gently caress!' A few seconds of furious searching later, Traynor composed herself and answered her platoon. "Alpha-One. I can give you Tombstones." Traynor wasn't sure that a Tombstone charge was a good idea. As an analyst she gave them a 50-50 shot of taking the enemy position. Even that estimate was basically bullshit. Nobody trained tombstone charges. Nobody trained any of this crazy private sector poo poo. gently caress. gently caress!

Specialist Traynor laid tombstones down as perfectly as any analyst could have. She watched the charge. She saw it all in disturbingly clear detail from the feed of her perched drones. She remembered a rumor she heard in analyst training. She once heard that when a Kerian analyst watched a battle, the bodies of their fallen were automatically censored by his drones, because Kerians were weak like that. Traynor thought that the rumor was probably bullshit. At the conclusion of the charge, Traynor had to resist the urge to jump out of her seat. She sat at her terminal, and smiled calmly. 'gently caress yeah! Alpha-One motherfuckers! Alpha-One! Don't gently caress with Alpha-One!' Traynor breathed a sigh of relief and felt tears of happiness well up in her eyes. Those idiot brutes actually managed to keep themselves alive, in spite of all the bullshit. Traynor watched and advised as her platoon took prisoners and treated the wounded. She let her cramped shoulders relax, and she looked around the room at the other analysts. Some were freaking like she had been, others were calm and collected, and some seemed downright bored. For the first time she didn't give a poo poo about what her LT was doing. gently caress him. Alpha-One won, and she had done her part. She looked back at her monitor and requested that Sergeant Grammer send the drones to check out their flanks. Traynor watched her feed. She didn't see any enemy activity in the immediate area. Traynor allowed herself a deep breath. She closed her eyes and massaged her forehead. She laughed quietly to herself, before quickly collecting herself. She wasn't about to let anything happen to her men after all that.

Traynor was watching her platoon work. Sands had just gone off to meet the ambulance she sent. Grammer was securing prisoners and directing his men into defensive postions. Traynor looked at the full water bottle she had on her desk. She picked it up and drank it entirely. Traynor noticed a strange smell in the air. A toxic smell that burned her nose. She took a deep breath and coughed it out. Suddenly there was a loud bang. Someone had kicked the door of the trailer open. Traynor looked over her shoulder and saw a man in dark, foreign armor filling the doorway of the trailer. He wore a gas mask. Traynor shot out of her chair and clutched the pistol strapped to her belt. Traynor wrapped her hand around her pistol and began to draw it, but the man already had his rifle leveled at her. Traynor saw the flash of the rifle, but she never heard a sound. Froglight fucked around with this message at 10:51 on Aug 17, 2014 |

Pvt. Samus Aran Disciplinary Action Report. Infraction: Insubordination. Mocking the Tenants of the Kerian State. Disciplinary Essay Assignment: 300 Word Reflection on the Kerian State, Incorporating Speciesm. When considering the space-faring races, and even the primitive world-bound people, most of the common stereotypes crumble under the simplest objective criticism. Throughout history those in power have thought of themselves as superior to anyone different from them, and anyone that they governed. This kind of discrimination has been a black mark on every society in every corner of the galaxy, for just about every species, from the time we started planted crops and building villages, to the current day. By the time a species is prepared to enter society on the galactic or inter-planetary scale, they have usually evolved beyond discrimination in regards to different races of their own species. It has not, however, always been as easy for us to evolve beyond discrimination when it comes to other species. In that regard, we still seem to show the same ignorance that our ancient ancestors did; and this brings us to what many consider to be the main tenant of Kerian philosophy. The founders of the Kerian State realized that people were capable of the most enlightened wisdom, and most terrible ignorance, and that, as Representative Taylor once said: "Both could be uttered in the same breath." (Parliament 12) The founders realized the wheat of wisdom needed to be separated from the chaff of ignorance with force and control, and that the wisest among us could be trusted to govern over the masses. The Kerian founders believed that an ideal society could be achieved with three governing principles: First: A primary social identity that surpasses species and creed. In other words, you might be a Human or a Bourian or a Larean, but first and foremost, you are a Kerian. Second: A strong central authority, governed by the wisest and most virtuous of us. The days of brave freedom fighters are over. If we are to move past violence and suffering as a united people, we must first admit that power and authority is a gift that the masses gratefully bestow upon the wisest of us. Third: Empathy. Empathy can no longer be seen as simply a virtuous character trait. An individual must possess the ability to empathize with his brothers and sisters, and an individual found to be deficient in empathy is to be considered socially and mentally disabled and not ready to be a healthy member of society, no matter their other qualities. It is through these tenants that we seek to avoid the crimes of our past, and forge a truly good society. It is through these tenants that we seek to no longer live in shame of our societal crimes. Dark company. Five men. The secret and invincible fist of the Kerian State. Perfect babies. Bottle-fed warriors. Battlefield gods. They had accompanied an airborne division assault mission. On another solid 'Samus Lead.' The last battle of the 88th ended when a bloodied and angry four-fingered fist smashed into their command trailer. Dripping with poison they burst into the command center and quickly killed every single person except the commander.

I don't know if you've considered this Froglight, but maybe you could work Commander Shepherd into the story somehow? He could show up and help to fight the metroids.
