The Imperialists select All-Star phenom Randy Johnson. The fact that I am considering cashing him in for rookie Bob Friend should be sufficient grounds for a ratings challenge by itself. The twee naming in the draft sheet has accelerated to the point that I literally do not know who the gently caress is up next.

The Truffle-Scented, Hydraulically-Powered, Master-Crafted Super-League XIV Preview: Senor Goodtimes Division In five division of the Super-League, there are clear favorites. The Bangers and Losers haven't lost a division race since Super-League IV, a season that took place over two calendar years ago. The Pirates, for their part, have never lost a division race in their history. Some team from Northern England is almost certain to win the Norris-Smythe, and the Tornados are the favorites to win the Memento Mori until they prove otherwise. The Senor Goodtimes Division, though? Who the gently caress knows what's going to happen there? And that's loving fantastic. This is a division that ended the regular season with a three-way tie two seasons in a row, with this There's no division more fascinating than the Senor Goodtimes Division. All four teams have a real chance to win the division, but all four teams also have fatal flaws that could also lead to them getting demoted. The Fhloston Pharmas won the division last year, finally clinching the title on the fourth tiebreaker. They then swept the Bangers in three straight before getting swept themselves by the W's. In short, it's hard to figure out exactly how good these Pharmas really are. Sometimes they look like they're on the cusp of greatness. Other times, they look like entirely hopeless. Factor in that FairGame has made a seemingly endless number of minor trades to tweak this roster, and the Pharmas become the great enigma of this division. They could win it by 10 games, they could lose 100 games. I just don't know. The Oklahoma City Bombers have been the most talented team in the division since they arrived a few seasons ago. But things keep going wrong. The whole of the team is less than the sum of its parts, and it just seems like there's an air of calamity (non-Canton) that constantly hangs over this team. The Bombers should win the division this season, but I just have a bad feeling about this team. The New World Symphony are the elders of the division, with mrnoun having had a team in this division since Super-League VI. Last season, this team suffered from a few of mrnoun's more quixotic roster moves, as Kal Daniels just isn't a starting-caliber player in the Super-League, and three Reggie Smiths is a lot for any one team. But they still have Josh Gibson and a good starting rotation, and the Senor Goodtimes Division isn't exactly the steepest hill to climb. The Grass Valley Wizards are the newcomers here. They didn't seem like much coming into the last Sub-Par League, but they won their division, and then the Sub-Par League Championship. I don't know how much TheMcD really knows about baseball, but given that ForeverBWFC is the reigning champion, and comes from a place where baseball is more rumor than fact, I'm not entirely sure that's a liability. Positional Breakdown Catcher 1. '51 Yogi Berra (OKC) 2. '11 Brian McCann/'65 Earl Battey (NYS) 3. '12 Buster Posey (GVW) 4. '84 Carlton Fisk (FHL) Berra is clearly the class of this group. It's not even really that close, so I don't feel the need to offer much more of an explanation. The McCann/Battey platoon is not exactly reliable, but it's at least theoretically viable, and that will probably do in this case, especially since, in a worst case scenario, Gibson can move back to catcher. Buster Posey has often been treated poorly by Mogul, since he just doesn't have much history in the majors. If the Super-League runs long enough, that will probably change. The issue with Fisk is thus: It's easy to look at Fisk's history and say "Oh, he played for close to another decade after 1984, he has plenty left in the tank!" Which is true, but that's only because Fisk played until he was 45 years old. In 1984, Fisk was 36 years old, and catcher who are that old tend to struggle. Granted, Fisk was probably the best "old" catcher that will ever play the game, but it's still a risky proposition for the Pharmas. First Baseman 1. '65 Harmon Killebrew (NYS) 2. '93 Fred McGriff (GVW) 3. '94 John Olerud (OKC) 4. '21 Harry Heilmann/'66 Dick Allen (FHL) Not an impressive group. That doesn't mean it's a bad group, it's just not impressive. Killebrew is good for walks and dingers, and that's the most important thing a first baseman can give you, in my opinion. McGriff was always a very good player who was just short of being great, and the most memorable thing about him was his "Crime Dog" nickname, and even that was more due to his name being "McGriff" than anything he actually did. Also, I can't help but associate him with both the late-80s Jays and 90s Braves, which were too teams that always seemed to be about 10& worse than they should have been. John Olerud was McGriff's successor in Toronto, and was a solid player who had an amazing 1993. Heilmann/Allen is a platoon that will be okay, but I don't know that I see them being much more than okay. Heilmann wasn't a true power hitter, and his other stats are a bit juiced from playing in a big hitter's era. Dick Allen was considered mercurial and unreliable in real life, and those issues have only been magnified in the Super-League. Second Baseman 1. '15 Eddie Collins (OKC) 2. '69 Joe Morgan (GVW) 3. '94 Roberto Alomar (FHL) 4. '47 Joe Gordon (NYS) Hall of famers all. Collins has typically been the best second baseman in the Super-League, and I don't really see that changing here. He'll hit .320 and steal bases, and what more could you want from a middle infielder? Joe Morgan and Roberto Alomar are similar in that they had tons of skills, but who were overlooked because it's hard to appreciate players who do everything fairly well. Morgan is the better player than Alomar, though, even if it's closer than you might think. Gordon is not one of the top five second basemen of all-time. The rest of these guys are. So, that's that. Third Baseman 1. '?? Josh Gibson (NYS) 2. '65 Ron Santo (OKC) 3. '65 Ron Santo (GVW) 4. '56 Jackie Robinson/'13 Evan Longoria (FHL) Gibson is an unstoppable force in the Super-League. He cannot be stopped. Those who have tried to stop him have failed, and, upon trying a second time to stop him, failed for a second time. Do not try to stop him, because you cannot. I think it's fair to say that '65 Ron Santo is about as good as '65 Ron Santo. The Robinson/Longoria platoon seems more like FairGame trying to make the best of a bad situation than an actual solution to his problem. Jackie Robinson was pretty old in 1956, and was only a year away from retirement. Longoria has scuffled in the Super-League, which I think is mainly because he doesn't have a great K/BB ratio, and Super-League pitchers are by and large guys who either a) Don't ever give up walks or b) Give up walks, but also strikeout a ton of guys. You can beat those guys with a great hit tool, which Longoria doesn't have (he's a career .272 hitter), or you can be a guy who draws so many walks that you can get them from any type of pitcher, like a Mark McGwire, and Longoria isn't quite that kind of guy. I don't think Longoria's struggles are because he's too new for Mogul to handle, I think there are systematic issues at play. Shortstop 1. '01 Alex Rodriguez (GVW) 2. '36 Arky Vaughan (OKC) 3. '13 Hanley Ramirez (FHL) 4. '47 Vern Stephens (NYS) In 2001, Bill James argued that Arky Vaughan was the second-best shortstop that ever played, but that A-Rod was right behind him. OF course, that was only a few years into Jeter's career, and one has to wonder if the combination of him having ten more good seasons past that point, as well as moving A-Rod to shortstop, doesn't put him somewhere in that conversation. Of course, Jeter's glove was never very good. Anyway, I think 2001 A-Rod is better than Vaughan, in that they were both potent at the plate, but A-Rod had the better glove. Hanley Ramirez is pretty good, but has the same sort of strikeout issue that Longoria has. Of course, Ramirez has enough other tools to make him a bit more playable. Vern Stephens had a few pretty good years, and then drank himself out of the league. And, let's be honest, there's nothing to do in Scranton but drink. Left Fielder 1. '87 Barry Bonds (GVW) 2. '00 Barry Bonds (OKC) 3. '12 Mike Trout (FHL) 4. '80 Tim Raines (NYS) Until Mogul is able to develop an aging pattern that accounts for BALCO, I'll take the younger Bonds. Mike Trout makes me feel like I've been doing this for far too long. When the Super-League started, Mike Trout wasn't even an eligible player, as he hadn't yet played a major league game at the time. Three years later, he's the best player in the American League, and a viable player in the Super-League. Come Super-League XV, if I get the updated players stats installed onto Mogul by then, he might even be an above-average Super-League player. Come Super-League XVIII, I'll be in an asylum, so it won't matter. Tim Raines was a good player, but 1980 is a pretty young version of Rock. Center Fielder 1. '65 Mickey Mantle (OKC) 2. '84 Rickey Henderson (FHL) 3. '15 Sam Rice (NYS) 4. '95 Kenny Lofton (GVW) Mickey Mantle was one of the greatest players of all-time. Granted, he had bad knees by 1965, and was close to having to be moved from center field to first base, but it's not that strong a group, and he's still Mickey Mantle. Rickey Henderson draws walks, hits a few dingers, and steals bases. He's not the superstar who's going to lead your team to a championship, but he's a profoundly helpful player. Sam Rice was a tremendous contact hitter who never struck out, and would have gotten to 3000 hits had he not gotten such a late start to his career. As it was, he still ended up with 2987 hits. Lofton had a similar skillset, but was not quite as good a hitter as Rice. Right Fielder 1. '96 Manny Ramirez (OKC) 2. '99 Gary Sheffield (GVW) 3. '71 Reggie Smith (NYS) 4. '25 Earle Combs/'21 Harry Heilmann (FHL) I would think that most of you are at least somewhat familiar with both Ramirez and Sheffield. Ramirez was a force of nature in his prime, and Sheffield had incredible bat speed and control. Both were fine players who are probably never going to get to Cooperstown because of PED allegations. The '71 Reggie Smith is the last Smith standing, and while Reggie Smith was not good enough to devote an entire outfield to him, as last season's Symphony proved, one of them probably won't kill you. I'm opposed to the Combs/Heilmann platoon on moral grounds, as Combs wasn't a right fielder, which means that, of the three starting outfielders for the Pharmas, exactly none of them are playing their primary position. That is an act of hubris on the part of FairGame, and he will pay a high price for it! Designated Hitter 1. '12 Albert Pujols (OKC) 2. '65 Billy Williams (GVW) 3. '49 Ted Kluszewski (NYS) 4. '66 Dick Allen/'84 Tip O'Neill (FHL) Pujols was still pretty good in 2012. He was, admittedly, a bit past his prime, though I have the feeling that, down the line, when we finally find out that he was always a couple of years older than he was reported to be, his career statistics will make a bit more sense in that regard. Billy Williams is a pretty good player who had the misfortune of playing most of his career for a team that never won anything ever. He did eventually make it to the postseason with the '75 A's, where he proved to be a Cub at heart, failing to get a single hit in eight at-bats. Klu was a weird loving player. For a four year period in the middle of his career, he was hit .315 with about 40 home runs and only 35 strikeouts, but without a ton of walks. For the rest of his career, he was okay, but nothing all that special. I have no idea how he projects to the Super-League, because he's just different. On baseball-reference, his top two comps are Kent Hrbek and Eric Karros, which seems insane. Hrbek struck out about twice as much as Klu, and hit above 30 home runs a whopping one time in his career. Karros routinely had over 100 strikeouts, and never had a season like one of Klu's best. The third best comp is Mo Vaughn, who at least had the same level of power, but also was a guy who led the league in strikeouts twice. There was no one like Klu, there was only Klu. The Allen/O'Neill platoon is fine. It's going to produce something, of that I have no doubt, but it's hard to get worked up over. Bench 1. '03 Victor Martinez/'03 Jason Giambi/'10 Dustin Pedroia/'95 John Valentin/'88 Eric Davis (OKC) 2. '57 Smoky Burgess/'03 Jimmy Rollins/'34 Billy Herman/Platoon Partners (FHL) 3. '23 Marty McManus/'70 Jim Fregosi/'75 Reggie Smith/'23 Ken Williams/Platoon Partner (NYS) 4. '07 Deacon McGuire/'65 Orlando Cepeda/'99 Eric Young/'87 Bobby Bonilla/'68 Reggie Jackson (GVW) I like the Bombers' bench. V-Mart is a great hitter for a catcher, exactly the sort of guy you want to back-up your starting catcher. Giambi is a left-handed pinch-hitter par excellence. Pedroia and Valentin are both infielders with some pop in their bats. For all the miseries that the Super-League has heaped on mentholmoose, he has a clear vision of what his team needs to compete. The Pharmas have Billy Herman, who is useful, and then a bunch of guys who are much less useful. The combination of Burgess, a fat load who couldn't field all that well, and Fisk, who is ancient, seem problematic. The Symphony have competent guys on their bench, but nothing too exciting. The Wizards have some decent bats on their bench, but their backup catcher is 42 years old, and was basically retired in 1907. That dog won't hunt, TheMcD. SP1 1. '99 Pedro Martinez (NYS) 2. '22 Walter Johnson (OKC) 3. '73 Bert Blyleven (FHL) 4. '74 Rick Reuschel (GVW) Johnson, overall, was a better pitcher than Martinez, but in 1922, Johnson was on the downside of his career, and in 1999, Pedro Martinez was the greatest pitcher in the universe. Bert Blyleven and Rick Reuschel were basically contemporaries, and Blyleven was thought of as the better pitcher at the time, and I don't know of any refinement in statistics since then that has reversed that judgment. Both are decent enough, though. SP2 1. '16 Pete Alexander (NYS) 2. '04 Eddie Plank (FHL) 3. '15 Ed Walsh (OKC) 4. '99 Kevin Brown (GVW) Alexander has usually been somewhere between good and great in the Super-League, and this is a relatively young version of him. Eddie Plank is a left-handed deadball pitcher, which sometimes serves him well, and other times doesn't. In this division, with its gamey offenses, he should be okay, but for the fact that most of the teams in this division have more right-handed than left-handed power bats for some reason. Ed Walsh was basically done by 1915, and has been inconsistent in the Super-League. Still, it's not all that good a division, so he might turn out okay. Kevin Brown was a very good pitcher who no one was ever excited to have on their teams in real life. He was also the first pitcher in history to get a $100 million contract, which, honestly, could have worked out a lot worse for the Dodgers. (See: The Darren Dreifort Contract of Infinite Horror). He's a sinkerballer's sinkerballer. SP3 1. '08 Roy Halladay (NYS) 2. '03 Deacon Phillippe (OKC) 3. '98 Curt Schilling (GVW) 4. '66 Jim Bunning (FHL) Doc Halladay was good, and will probably be the second guy inducted into the Hall of Fame with a Blue Jays cap. The only question is whether or not the Hall will do the right thing and give him the classic Jays cap logo rather than the lame one they used for most of his career. Deacon Phillippe has usually been one of the better deadballers, and the fact that this one came from the Unicorns just feels right because, it many ways, the Bombers are the heirs to the Unicorns' legacy of disappointment. Curt Schilling has been somewhat erratic in the Super-League, and I don't know how well he'll perform or the Wizards. Bunning is in the same boat. SP4 1. '95 Roger Clemens (OKC) 2. '76 Don Sutton (NYS) 3. '55 Robin Roberts (FHL) 4. '89 Curt Schilling (GVW) Clemens has never been as good as he should be in the Super-League. If it were someone other than Clemens, I'd probably look into that, but it's hard to get all that irritated when Roger Clemens is doing badly. Don Sutton was a guy who made it to the Hall of Fame by having twenty decent years in a row. He was rarely great, but if you are able to pitch long enough without getting injured, you can pile up some real numbers. Scuffing the hell out of the ball in the latter half of his career helped as well. Robin Roberts, on the other hand, made the Hall of Fame by having a few really, really awesome years where he just pitched tons of innings and piled up tons of wins in those few years. In 1989, Curt Schilling didn't really know how to pitch. SP5 1. '24 Stan Coveleski (FHL) 2. '74 Andy Messersmith (OKC) 3. '76 Burt Hooton (NYS) 4. '07 Al Orth (GVW) Well, gently caress, there's a less-than-inspiring group. Coveleski is a spitballer who was closer to the end than the beginning in 1924, though he still had a couple of good years left in his arm by that point. Messersmith was a promising young pitcher who was asked to pitch a 292.1 and then 321.2 innings in back-to-back years. His arm exploded, and that was about the end of him. Burt Hooton was a mid-rotation guy, behind Sutton and Messersmith for most of his best years with the Dodgers. And look, he's behind Messersmith again! Al Orth, over his career, was an exactly league-average pitcher. According to baseball-reference, he was also known as "The Curveless Wonder." Neither of those facts inspires much confidence. Bullpen 1. '10 Mariano Rivera/'06 Joe Nathan/'10 David Robertson/'95 Mike Stanton/'03 Mike Timeline/'73 Jim Kaat (OKC) 2. '76 Mike Marshall/'76 Elias Sosa/'84 Dave Schmidt/'08 B.J. Ryan/'08 A.J. Burnett/'56 Connie Johnson (NYS) 3. '93 Steve Bedrosian/'75 Sparky Lyle/'92 Rick Honeycutt/'10 Joba Chamberlain/'29 George Uhle/'73 Dock Ellis (FHL) 4. '12 Sergio Romo/'12 Brian Wilson/'12 Javier Lopez/'65 Lindy McDaniel/'12 Tim Lincecum/'12 Madison Bumgarner (GVW) Leave it to the worst division to assemble the best group of bullpens. I guess you guys figured out that you were going to need all the help you could get. The Bombers have loads and loads of quality relievers, including Rivera as their closer. Granted, Rivera wasn't great for them the season before, but he's still Rivera. The Symphony's group is more competent than transcendent, but that's good enough in the Super-League. The Pharmas' bullpen is kludged together from a bunch of parts that other teams didn't want, and, to be honest, I'm not sure why FairGame wanted some of these guys either. Especially the 38 year-old Rick Honeycutt. Fun fact: Rick Honeycutt threw nine complete games for the 1980 Seattle Mariners. The Wizards' bullpen is fine, but Romo has had his issues in the Super-League, as Beet can tell you or, given that Romo cost him the championship this season, can whimper to you in between sobs. Conclusion PANIC!

The main thing I'm taking away from this preview is that I don't have the worst players at every position, and that's a good sign. Everything from there can be solved with copious amounts of magic. And maybe Schillings. And by the way, management forgot to say, the Dinos are up next, pick without delay!

Averaging the top 4 for every position last season showed I had a #2/#3 team and I ended up being 72-90 tied for last place. I survived in 5 in a best of 5.

The Criminally-Negligent, Steam-Powered, Digitally-Remastered Super-League XIV Preview: Norris-Smythe Division For the first eleven seasons of its existence, the Norris-Smythe failed to produce a Super-League Champion. For the first thirteen seasons of their existence, the South Bolton Eazy W's failed to win the Super-League Championship. Now, both of those streaks are over, and the W's will try to become the first team since the Chicago Bobbleheads of Super-League VI-VII to win back-to-back championships. Their old enemies in the North of England, however, will have something to say about that.... How good were the Eazy W's last season? That's hard to say. They have Babe Ruth and Cy Young and Pete Alexander, which is a pretty good core, but they also relied on Jack McDowell of all people to win three games for them in the postseason, which is not exactly sustainable. But they are the reigning champions, and have had a bit of a renaissance over the past few seasons, so expectations are high. The Walney Rakers are the W's biggest rivals, but have now lost the Northern Derby two years running to their hated foes, and, even worse, have been forced to sit idly by as Bolton won its first league title last postseason. Fortunately for the Rakers, by winning the pick 'em contest last season, they won the rights to draft Mel Ott in the sandwich round, which fills in the last remaining hole in their lineup, and gives them an offense that surpasses anything anyone else in the division can put on the field. The Kobe Crows barely survived into Super-League XIV, miraculously beating the Knights in a five-game tiebreaker to keep their place in the higher league. Unfortunately for them, they still have most of the same flaws that hurt them last season. Their best hope of survival is hoping that the Dragons are even worse than them, because I'm not sure if, as presently constituted, HulkaMatt has any chance in hell of beating either of the Northern England clubs. The Krakow Dragons are the great unknowns of the division. They won the EC Championship, which is nice, but isn't a particularly strong predictor of future success. Positional Breakdown Catcher 1. '27 Mickey Cochrane (WAL) 2. '34 Mickey Cochrane (KRA) 3. '82 Ted Simmons/'10 Victor Martinez (SLA) 4. '04 Jorge Posada (KOB) When it comes to catchers, I'll go with youth, if only because years of crouching tends to do bad things to catchers' knees. Then again, Cochrane's career didn't end because of knee problems, it ended because he got smashed in the skull by a pitch. Even worse, Bump Hadley was a pretty mediocre pitcher to end a person's career. The Simmons/Martinez platoon put together two guys who were mediocre in the field, but were good enough at the plate to extend their career by becoming DHs. Of course, they're going to be forced to play the field for the W's, and that might not end well. Jorge Posada probably means a lot to Yankees fans, because he played for the team forever and was relatively good for them. Then again, they also have weird feelings about guys like Paul O'Neill and Scott Brosius. First Baseman 1. '27 Jimmie Foxx (WAL) 2. '34 Hank Greenberg (KRA) 3. '99 John Olerud (SLA) 4. '04 David Ortiz/'02 Jason Giambi (KOB) Foxx and Greenberg are two guys who got their careers cut short. Foxx had certain issues with drinking, while Greenberg had injury troubles, and then lost close to four seasons to World War II. When healthy, though, both were devastating offensive forces. Foxx was a bit better, though. John Olerud is in the right stadium, and that does count for a fair amount, as a left-handed hitter with mid-range power can be quite valuable if he plays half of his games in the Coliseum. The Ortiz/Giambi platoon is baffling to me, if only because both men are left-handed, and neither is particularly good at hitting left-handed pitching. Also, both are terrible defenders. Why are they platooning? Only HulkaMatt can say for sure. Second Baseman 1. '27 Rogers Hornsby/'27 Eddie Collins (WAL) 2. '34 Charlie Gehringer (KRA) 3. '86 Lou Whitaker (SLA) 4. '02 Nap Lajoie (KOB) If you platoon two of the best second basemen of all-time together, odds are it will work out at least okay, and it's probably the way to try and keep the old Collins healthy all season. Gehringer is good, he's just not as good as Hornsby, which, to be honest, is true for just about any second baseman not named "Morgan" or "Collins". Whitaker is another player in the right stadium, as he can hit 15-20 home runs in the Coliseum, which is outstanding for a middle infielder in the Super-League. Lajoie will hit about .300, which is good, especially in a offensively-depressed league like the Super-League, but he isn't going to hit for much power, or draw walks, and we've already talked about his defensive shortcomings. Third Baseman 1. '85 Wade Boggs (WAL) 2. '06 Alex Rodriguez (KRA) 3. '04 Scott Rolen (SLA) 4. '95 Chipper Jones (KOB) Boggs had great contact skills, and the Super-League rewards great contact skills. He's probably also remembered for his bizarre superstitions, such as eating chicken before every game and inscribing "chai", the Hebrew word for life in the dirt before every at-bat, despite not being Jewish. In fairness, Qabbalah is known for raising one's batting average, that's just a fact. A-Rod should still go into the Hall of Fame. A-Rod has basically the same problem that Evan Longoria has, in that he doesn't have great contact skills, and strikeouts out a fair amount without drawing huge amounts of walks. Of course, he's a better player than Longoria, so he's more usable in the Super-League. Scott Rolen has a similar profile to A-Rod, except just 15% worse at everything except fielding. Granted, Rolen is a pretty great fielder, so he has his uses. Chipper Jones is a bad fielder, and brutally inconsistent in the Super-League. And I could forgive all of that if he didn't insist on being called "Chipper." I half-expect Jones to come out one of these days, and admit that he's always been a cartoon beaver trapped in a man's body, and that's why he insisted on the goofy nickname. Shortstop 1. '07 Honus Wagner (KRA) 2. '97 Nomar Garciaparra (WAL) 3. '87 Alan Trammell (KOB) 4. '91 Cal Ripken (SLA) We have had the Honus Wagner conversation. There is no need to have it again. Also, his real name wasn't "Honus", it was "Johannes". I'm picking Nomar up here because he's the best hitter of the bottom three. There's not a lot more to it than that. I know that shortstop is a defense-first position, but I know what both Trammell and Ripken can do in the Super-League, and it's hard to get excited about either of them. Trammell should be decent enough, as always, but probably not a lot more than that. Ripken has the best glove of any of these four guys, but his offense is inconsistent, and his career OBP in real life is .340, and the Coliseum isn't particularly conducive to right-handed power hitting. But he does have a glove, and that's really what the W's want from him anyway. Left Fielder 1. '95 Gary Sheffield (KOB) 2. '27 Al Simmons (WAL) 3. '29 Al Simmons/'10 Joe Jackson (SLA) 4. '34 Goose Goslin (KRA) I believe in Gary Sheffield, because, over the course of his career, he was more productive offensively than Al Simmons and was much more patient at the plate. Granted, Al Simmons had better contact skills, but how much of that is era effects? The Rakers' Simmons is above the W's Simmons to demonstrate my displeasure with Joe Jackson, who has been a consistent disappointment in the Super-League. For a lot of players, I'd feel bad about that, but Joe Jackson helped throw a World Series and, even worse, is constantly white-knighted by old-timey sportswriters. loving Field of Dreams. Goose Goslin is a vaguely similar player to Simmons, albeit not quite as food. Center Fielder 1. '61 Willie Mays (WAL) 2. '24 Ty Cobb (KRA) 3. '02 Bernie Williams (KOB) 4. '08 Carlos Beltran (SLA) The next person who complains that Willie Mays sucks in the Super-League is going to get a beating. Fair warning. Ty Cobb is a great hitter, but the practical problems of running out a 37 year-old to center field every day should be apparent to everyone. 2002 was the last good Bernie Williams season before he fell off a cliff. I have this terrible feeling that, years down the line, Bernie Williams is going to get a Phil Rizzuto type induction into the Hall of Fame. That would break my heart. Carlos Beltran was only 31 years old in 2008, but he felt a lot older. Beltran's a postseason hero whose heroics ultimately amount to nothing. He's the Hector of the Playoffs, in that if he is your mightiest warrior, Ilium's going get its head kicked in. Right Fielder 1. '26 Babe Ruth (SLA) 2. '35 Mel Ott (WAL) 3. '97 Vladimir Guerrero (KOB) 4. '24 Harry Heilmann (KRA) Ruth is Ruth is Ruth is Ruth. There is no need to discuss Babe Ruth, he just is. Mel Ott was not as good as Ruth, but was still a very good player who had the misfortune of playing for the New York Giants, the memory of which has kind of eroded over time, as they did not have the regional cache of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Of course, for most of their existence, the Giants were more popular than the Dodgers, and Ott was better than any player fielded by the Dodgers in their time in Brooklyn, which possible exception of Jackie Robinson. Vladimir Guerrero had incredible bat speed, and, well, it was so incredible that it masked the fact that he was a brutal fielder and was morally opposed to the concept of a walk. I have nothing interesting to say about Heilmann at this point. It seems like half of the teams in the league are using him now, which is quite distressing to me. Designated Hitter 1. '04 Manny Ramirez (KOB) 2. '27 Eddie Collins/'26 Rogers Hornsby (WAL) 3. '02 Ed Delahanty (SLA) 4. '62 Willie McCovey/'24 Charlie Gehringer (KRA) Ramirez could loving hit. Take away Manny being Manny, and the PEDs, and whatever else, Ramirez could still loving hit. The Collins/Hornsby pairing mainly exists to keep Collins fresh, and it should, hopefully, be able to accomplish that. Ed Delahanty is a good hitter, but was a bit old in 1902, and his tragic feud with the Niagara Falls may become an issue at some point. The McCovey/Gehringer pairing is creative, but Gehringer is left-handed, which will degrade its effectiveness substantially. Bench 1. '82 Jim Sundberg/'87 Don Mattingly/'85 Bobby Grich/'27 Jimmie Dykes/'03 Sam Crawford (WAL) 2. '04 Jason Varitek/'02 Derek Jeter/'04 Nomar Garciaparra/'04 Johnny Damon/Platoon Partners (KOB) 3. '07 Adam Dunn/'03 Mark Bellhorn/'86 Kirk Gibson/Platoon Partners (SLA) 4. '24 Johnny Bassler/'16 Rabbit Maranville/'24 Heinie Manush/'16 Sherry Magee/Platoon Partners (KRA) I've always liked the Rakers' bench, if only because it has a full complement of backups that can be called on should everything go to hell, and that's really the entire point of a bench in the first place. The Crows have hitters on their bench, and not much else. Hopefully, Matt turned his defensive substitution slider to -10,000. The W's have a fun bench, and Dunn and Bellhorn both provide extra pop on the bench from the left side of the plate, which should work on well in the Coliseum. The Dragons' bench is not very good, simply because they haven't had time to acquire depth. In time, if they survive, it will get better. SP1 1. '?? New Hoss Radbourn (KRA) 2. '02 Cy Young (SLA) 3. '04 Pedro Martinez (KOB) 4. '27 Lefty Grove (WAL) The world will quake at the approach of New Hoss Radbourn. Cy Young has his problems, but he doesn't give up home runs, and that is the absolute most important thing that right-handed pitchers have to do in the Coliseum. Pedro Martinez was a bit past his prime in 2004, but still had something left in the tank. Lefty Grove has generally been good for the Rakers, and they're probably hoping that last year was an aberration. SP2 1. '12 Pete Alexander (SLA) 2. '65 Juan Marichal (WAL) 3. '11 Eddie Plank (KOB) 4. '07 Babe Adams (KRA) Alexander is great, but, sadly, I'm out of things to say about him. He has always been above-average for the W's. Every single season. Juan Marichal has had double-digit complete games in each of the last three seasons, which is probably the first time in Super-League history that's ever happened. I hope it keeps happening, because it's cool. Eddie Plank is a deadballer, and, by this point, I think everyone has a sense of what that means. In this division, Plank will probably find it somewhat tough going against the Rakers, but make up for it against the W's. Or, at least he would if we weren't talking about small sample sizes. Babe Adams is a guy. He was one of the best pitchers the Pirates have had in their history, which says more about the Pirates' inability to develop pitching than anything else. SP3 1. '97 Pedro Martinez (KOB) 2. '18 Dazzy Vance (WAL) 3. '81 Steve Carlton (SLA) 4. '07 Deacon Phillippe (KRA) Would the Expos still be in Montreal today if they had been able to keep Pedro? No. Nothing was going to keep the Expos in Montreal. The stadium was a dump, and not in the "I want money for a new stadium" way, in the "Andre Dawson no longer has cartilage in his knees" way. The city of Montreal had no particular desire to build a new stadium for the team, and there was no one who was going to build them a new stadium from private funds. Also, the fanbase just wasn't really there, despite what Jonah Keri will try and tell you. Dazzy Vance was the greatest pitcher of the 1920s, which was a down decade for pitching in general, so no one remembers that. Steve Carlton is erratic in the Super-League, and that's just life, I suppose. The Deacon's arm was basically gone by 1907. SP4 1. '92 John Clarkson (WAL) 2. '99 Mike Mussina (KOB) 3. '34 Tommy Bridges (KRA) 4. '92 Jack McDowell (SLA) John Clarkson was one of the first great pitching stars in baseball history. and also a complete head case who spent his last few years in an asylum. Mike Mussina is just a guy in the Super-League. Deal with it, HulkaMatt! Tommy Bridges was a good pitcher for the Tigers of the '30s, but given that most people of today probably can't remember any of the pitchers who played on those teams, I'm not sure how impressive that really is. Jack McDowell's biggest problem is that he is spectacularly unsuited to starting games in the Coliseum, since he doesn't have the deadballer bonus to ward off home runs, and any fly ball hit more than 200 feet to right field is probably going over the fence. SP5 1. '02 Greg Maddux (WAL) 2. '01 Curt Schilling (KOB) 3. '07 Sam Leever (KRA) 4. '?? RNG God (SLA) Maddux is always good, even if he's a bit old in 2002. Schilling, on the other hand, often fails to be impressive in the Super-League, and, like Joe Jackson, I can't say I really care. I mean, okay, in 2004, I'm sure that the people of Boston loved him, but now? After continually supporting Republican causes and defrauding the Rhode Island state government out of millions? Do you guys still really like him? Sam Leever's arm was close to the end by 1907, which is mildly concerning. I don't know if the RNG God will be a pitcher to start the season. I haven't made that roll yet. Bullpen 1. '02 Mariano Rivera/'04 Keith Foulke/'04 Mike Timlin/'02 Andy Pettitte/'02 Mike Mussina/'02 Roger Clemens (KOB) 2. '90 Rob Dibble/'?? Eri Yoshida/'88 John Franco/'88 Dave Smith/'07 Jason Isringhausen/'25 Burleigh Grimes (SLA) 3. '93 John Smoltz/'85 Al Holland/'95 Bryan Harvey/'84 John Candelaria/'82 Danny Darwin/'97 Kevin Brown (WAL) 4. '06 Trevor Hoffman/'92 Ron Darling/'16 Tom Hughes/'07 Vic Willis/'34 Alvin Crowder/'34 Schoolboy Rowe (KRA) I feel like, if Rivera is at the head of a bullpen, they should presumptively rated as the best bullpen. I can't say that I'm a huge fan of loading down a bullpen with extra starters, but the top of the pen is good enough that I'll let it slide in this case. The W's are moving Yoshida to the set-up spot. At the very least, it should be exciting. The Rakers bullpen has a lot of decent relievers from the '80s that are mainly forgotten today. Holland! Harvey! Candelaria! Darwin! None of them are exactly elite relievers, but most of them had decent careers. The Dragons have all of one true reliever in the bullpen. That might not work out perfectly. Conclusion The Champ is here!
