My dirty corner. I really need to replace this desk one day. It has 2 power sockets on the side, that is what the grey cable is under the white drawer - it has to plug into mains power, and then you can use those sockets (in this case the printer is plugged into the desk). I don't know what kind of wood this desk is, but I think it's kind of soft, the screws that attach the legs on the side opposite the white drawer don't even fit into the back board anymore. The whole thing is just balancing.

I think this demonstrates it better.

Particleboard will do that. When I put a 21" CRT on the first desk I had ever owned, the board functioning as a leg started to seperate, fast. To fix this, I just got some L-brackets, machine screws, and metal for the outside to act as a brace. Drill through the plate at the back, the side, and use the screws to tie it all in at least two points, you'll be fine.

I figure this would be a good place ask:

I just ordered one of those monitor mount arms from Monoprice (the three-way adjustable is on sale for $18 btw) and I was wondering if anyone knew of something that I could attach in between the monitor and the mounting point on the arm to make the monitor capable of rotating between portrait and landscape. It's not totally necessary to my setup but I have a few games that would benefit from being able to play in portrait mode. Thanks in advance.

That one should be able to do what you want; in the specs it lists rotation range of 360deg.

Edit: Unless they mean rotation around the pole base and not monitor.

According to reviews it does mean around the pole, which is misleading and disappointing.

800 dollar rig left me no money for a monitor from this century, a desk, or a place to put any of this other than my living room.

Before I put the monitor on the fold-out chair it was sitting on the floor.

I planned this out very poorly. My initial plan was to put together a cheap DIY desk, but I kept putting it off and before I knew it I had everything already shipped to my place.

This is totally temporary and that pic was taken literally the day I put together just because I found the situation to be hilarious. I already ordered a refurbished monitor off Newegg and got a lovely desk from a friend until I get around to building a new one.

I actually ended up changing my use case by the very end and decided to forego getting a PS4 down the line and make this my new gaming platform. I also blew my budget spectacularly by the very end and made the incredibly stupid decision of buying everything in 3 different stages.

Hardware Specs

The desk has a 36 by 72 inch surface and I've had it for at least half a decade; the shelf above it was built by my father as a birthday present one year to match the desk. It's hung like a kitchen cabinet and it feels sturdy enough to sit on (not that I've tried); the center two sections were built to be 19 inches wide so I could effectively rack-mount the (inexpensive) mixer.

The standalone monitors are all 1680×1050 between 20 and 22 inches, with the left two attached to the tower and the right attached to the laptop. I'd like to eventually replace the laptop with a Mac Mini and the three monitors with identical 24" 1980×1200 IPS panels on a triple monitor stand, wired so that the left monitor is always tied to the desktop, but the center and right monitors can be tied to either computer, so I could switch between 3 Win/0 Mac (Eyefinity gaming), 2 Win/1 Mac, or 1 Win/2 Mac setups.

I just upgraded the tower case and most of the components inside it, save for the video card which was only a year and a half old. I then almost immediately transplanted the green and orange power and disk LEDs from my old case to replace the blinding blue LEDs on the new one, as this setup is in my bedroom.

I'd also really like to find a black mouse similar to mine - I love my big old ambidextrous IntelliMouse Optical and I'm on my third or fourth one, but it looks really out of place with everything else being black.

And, since a few other people have posted similar recently, here's the inside of my case:

Hopefully, it'll stay this clean.

Is the big fan on the left an intake or outflow fan? The reason I ask is because there isn't a fan on the back grill there, so confused by the airflow.

The big fan is inflow, and the heat sink fan is blowing the same way, so all of the air is flowing front (photo left) to rear (right).

I'm watching temperatures to see if a rear fan is necessary, but the front 180 mm fan seems to be doing fine on its own so far, so as long as temperatures stay good I'll leave this configuration alone (single filtered intake, positive pressure, pretty quiet).

Well I always think minimal is best, especially so when it comes to fans. I tried a similar setup with my case but I wasn't happy with the temperatures, so I ended up knocking out the grills and using a dremel to smooth out the rough edges. Airflow got better and it actually got a bit quieter, but I wanted a bit less noise so I bought some Noctua fans to help with that.

Same case, same cooler, temps will be fine. Biggest improvement I made was to put an aftermarket cooler on my videocard. That dropped temps and noise.

Make sure you spend the extra on noctua PWM fans. They can run as low as 200-300rpm
