YES this is the perfect place to post that. So now we know why Ice Pick was asking for a bunch of extras for some film a while ago (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/11/27/pathologic-remake/)

This was also posted several days ago but I get the feeling most of those houses were resistance shelters rather than residential homes when they were bombarded. The Combine don't often use headcrabs because they are difficult to control and can actually pose a problem for their own occupation forces if it gets out of hand (which we started to see in Episode 1 with infested Combine soldiers.) Headcrab bombardment is intended to be a terror tactic, and its deployment against members of the resistance is intended to set an example of why you shouldn't resist the Combine. The Combine can just use regular old footsoldiers or bombardment if their goal is strategic. So, those houses and whatnot were resistance bases, not just average joe civilian homes, and Ravenholm was a massive resistance stronghold before it was bombarded.

I think this was mentioned in one of the commentaries somewhere.
poo poo I forgot all about that. Most of those places would have the resistance caches of weapons and ammo too, now that I think back. It's been so long since I played the game.

Sorry I meant to say I hope that the police use maximum force and kill or maim a bunch of innocent people, thus paving a way for a proletarian uprising and socialist utopia

also here's a stupid take
---------------------------->
Yeah, headcrabs are one of those things that are really really scary but strategically extremely risky since it affects you as much as it affects the enemy. So basically like almost any other chemical or bioweapon. Instituting mass-headcrab zombification for defiance is more useful.

It also makes the story being told by those houses a little bit less chilling since the inhabitants were at least capable of defending themselves and it's quite possible that they were able to evacuate most of the people there, like they did at Black Mesa East.

So how much game is there in Darkwood? Looks and sounds cool but not sure how much I'll get out of it with the early access thing. Tried to avoid too much information so not even sure if it's an actual plot based game or more free form "trundle around until you die" kinda thing.

If the only reason to like a game is because of a segment where gameplay is completely different from the other parts of the game... the game is not good. Unless you really like mario party.

The game is actually more like mario party than any other kind of game. As a whole it's awful in that it changes itself up so much it's one game that's actually a few mini-games in one. That's all that matters. Buying a game for retail or even used price because a portion of the game is bearable isn't right.

It's unknown if this is a tv project, or a game, or maybe both.
I had gotten more of an impression that the game was just using some engine from Kojima's studio and that he's not really attached to it, and honestly del Toro hasn't written or directed any recent bits of horror. So I'm still iffy on having any kind of hype with these two names attached, especially with the sheer lack of horror that Kojima has ever been attached to (though I must admit that Snatcher did have some pretty tense moments).

The important thing about del Toro is that he's a visual creator much like Clive Barker. The guy keeps meticulous notes and drawings and he's very hands on with his projects.

My problem with basically every Silent Hill after The Room is that they lack imagination and they're not well designed games. What started as a cerebral horror became more and more rooted in its genre trappings becoming predictable in a way cerebral horror shouldn't. If del Toro is in charge of writing/scenario design, I can at least expect a bit more imagination in the design beyond "naked pink dog #7" and "vaguely humanoid lumpy thing with elongated limbs #12." And if Kojima or at least his production team is responsible for the game then hell, it might actually be a fun to play game!

Yeah, I remember hearing years ago that they were wanting to make that into a movie and I couldn't see it working too well. Lovecraft always worked more off the idea of tell and don't show because it's way too super spooky (and difficult) to actually view. But I want to believe that del Toro can be a good idea man and that it's super early to really be saying one way or another if this is going to be good.

I'd be happy to get another Downpour instead of another Homecoming.

Just a heads-up to everyone; Del Toro is kind of notorious for hyping up projects way before they have any tangible work done into them. At least he is when it comes to film. I'm waiting until a gameplay trailer before I started getting hyped up for this.

Silent Hill needs some kind of a shake-up because it was getting pretty predictable and stale with the same old pink dogs and browned-out bathrooms that just weren't scary anymore.

The Strain is pretty rad though, both the books and the TV series (so far). Yeah I know everyone's sick of vampires, and they were even when the book came out a few years ago, but he managed to take the genre back to a place of actual horror by making them hideous, infected creatures, with a nice heaping dose of body horror to go along with it, once again.

Del Torro has this kind of style, you see the especially darker parks in pan's labyrinth.

All I want to see is silent hill's hosed up melancholy, macabre, bleakness on pan labyrinth's relatively mild in the hosed up department but definitely trippy steroids. Just pan's labyrinth in silent hill.

Done proper and I think we might just have a completely new kind of hosed up. Some sort of feverdreamish nightmare in an alien's mind.

Oh god...I don't know how to feel about this. It's like I've gotten out of a really bad relationship just as things were crashing and burning and now they're coming back claiming everything will be different. Every time a new SH game comes out I'm always hoping it'll be that one, special game that brings me back to the franchise and recaptures the feeling of the first four games. There have been a lot of disappointments.

I like Del Toro a lot, but honestly I can't say I've ever been truly scared by his movies, but that's not so much because they're not good...fear never actually seems to be the goal. They're more dark faerie tales or fables. Or at least that's how it's always felt to me. The creature designs could be interesting at least. I'm still not sure, I'll probably have to see some really good reviews before I get my hopes up.

With them flashing big names around like this it seems like they might be trying to resuscitate the franchise. Which is appropriate considering the last game. If there's a "rock bottom" for a horror genre it's being turned into a top-down, co-op, diablo clone. At the very least with some reputable names attached to the project I hope this means that the game will be given to an actually decent studio. Homecoming was done by a studio with less than 10 games to their name, most of them being movie and tv licenses. Downpour was done by developers who had one previous game to their credit and went out of business after Downpour was created. Maybe there will be creators involved who have actual experience making horror games.

Probably too much to hope that anyone from Team Silent will be on board though.

That wouldn't be the worst style to do a Silent Hill game in. Fairy tales are all about getting lost in weird and supernatural places, which fits Silent Hill the town to a T. There's only a pretty thin line between dream-like and nightmarish.

It's certainly not too far off and it wouldn't be a bad theme to base a game around, I just mean that I haven't actually found Del Toro's stuff to be strong in the horror aspect: weird, surreal, even creepy (all great elements for a silent hill game) but not actually frightening and that's something that the first silent hill games were great for.

Actually thinking about it, Silent Hill 4 is sort of what I'd imagine a silent hill game created by Del Toro to be like: bizarre and dreamlike, with some fascinating visuals and neat ideas. But lacking the subtlety and atmosphere to really create fear.

Still, if the new Silent Hill game could even manage to be as good as The Room at this point that would be a dramatic improvement.

I still think The Room would have been the best game in the series if it were entirely first person and the second half wasn't a recycled version of the first half but now with an escort mission.

I'd honestly prefer a dreamlike, surreal, not quite frightening but visually striking game like The Room than yet more blood and rust or "totally symbolic but not scary or interesting" water/ice/electricity Otherworlds.

I don't really find most horror scary to begin with and I haven't seen any of Del Toro's horror movies, so I can't really comment on that. I think you're underestimating him a bit, though. When he isn't working on lovely comic book adaptations he can do some really inspired work. Pan's Labyrinth was a piece of genius and really creepy despite the fantasy stuff actually really just being the backdrop to a family drama. Hell, even the Hellboy movies an order of magnitude better than pretty much any other comic adaptation. That's not a bad achievement.

He can do some really good stuff with the resources he's given, so I'm cautiously optimistic that this can turn out pretty well if he applies himself.

Silent Hill was neat because nobody had seen J-horror in the west at the time outside of a few hardcore horror fans. I think it sold better here, because after the original team left Konami tried western developers and it never really worked, because culturally and traditionally our ideas of what's scary is a little different. Not saying that american horror is inherently bad or Japanese horror is inherently good, but when western devs took over it just lost what made SH unique in the first place.

I'm always a sucker for new Silent Hill, though.

Other than a few missteps, I thought the Silent Hill movie was excellent. I really enjoyed it, though I have an innate fear of evil little girls with hair covering their faces. When I read that Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro were teaming up, my first instinct was pure joy at Hideo Kojima who I love unconditionally. My second response was "which del Toro is this again?" so off to IMDB I went. What horror films has this man been involved in? From what is listed there I have seen the following:

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark - Just really not that good. I don't remember much.
Mama - Really loving bad. I have a pretty high tolerance for a movie before I will outright call it bad but drat. The commercials were way scarier than the movie.
