I'm in a bit of a creative funk lately and one thing I find that helps me out of these is picking apart someone else's tracks and remixing them to bits. This is a problem, however, because I don't like half-assing it and prefer to get multitrack stems to completely disassemble and reassemble a track instead of making shoddy bootlegs or adding an a cappella over a completely new track. As such, I have a hard time finding things to play with. Few artists are willing to release that sort of thing aside from remix contests, which are only available for a limited time and are often genres I don't like or care about and, more often than not, from groups I've never even heard of. Are there any resources where I can find track stems to play with or am I more or less out of luck? For a while there was a thread here where goons were trading songs around but it's fallen into the archives.

I'll have to reupload some tracks and files and whatnot, but if that's something that'll attract interest, then I'd be happy to post up a new one. There were some neat tracks that came out of the last one.

Anyways me and a friend have almost finished our first trance track together, it's missing a fine mixing session and some extra FXs and buiilds and tweaks here and there but I'm pretty proud of where it go to. The Mutato posted:Still not working so I signed up the old school way... but I realised that means I can't access the sample pack right? I feel like your breakdown could have been bigger (maybe another 4 or 8 phrases), and used the lead motif from the middle part (comes in at around 1:20), filtered down. Trance usually has the breakdown earlier, not near the end, but I like this structure too - even so, it would be really cool if you added a reprise with everything coming back in after the breakdown, especially with that change to the breakdown. Doing that would push it out beyond 7 minutes, which I usually consider to be a good minimum length for this kind of epic trance. Apart from those minor nitpicks, I really like it! What did you use to make it?

So a couple of times throughout my journey of learning how to make house music when I posted my tracks here you offered to show them around to labels. I shied away from the offers because I never felt good about where my music was at and didn't think it made sense to try if I felt that way. Its been probably a year and a half now and I've just been here trying and trying to get better and make what I want to hear and in the past month or two I feel like I got there, not like professional or anything but I feel its music that I'm content with and that other people may enjoy. I'm incredibly happy about this and really proud of myself that I actually finished a cohesive musical piece. So, Quincy, if you would like to show this around I would be very happy if you could send me a message on sc and I can get you the tracks. If not, I'll probably just release it for free. So without further ado, I give you my EP: House of Love https://soundcloud.com/swanconnley/sets/house-of-love/s-qnPbc

I took a break from making the usual dubstep and dnb to try something that I've never done before - a Helios style track. This is pretty much the reason why I wanted to learn a DAW in the first place, just know enough to start mixing guitars and other effects. I sort of had a loooong detour where I got lost in the dance world and then I just never got around to doing this. I'm happy with the result though! https://soundcloud.com/stosz/wherever-you-are

I have a huge problem with percussion. All of my projects grind to a halt when I need percussion because I can never find a sound that is close enough to what I want and have no clue how to change sounds into what I want. Recently I downloaded something called EDR sampler vol.1, since I need lots of percussion samples just to find one that I can use. Problem is, it contains 5427 samples and I have no loving clue how to make use of that many samples effectively, or even how to find samples that I would want in such a large group. I know that the samples are all parts of various kits, as in 50 samples are part of one kit, and another 85 or so is another kit. I don't know what I should do. I need percussion, but I have no clue how to get it.

Your best bet is to start writing with only percussion and get that solidified first. If you don't know what style you're going for then pick a song you like or want to sound similar to and try to find samples that match that song. Often times, if you aren't familiar with percussion sampling then it's really hard to match the right drums to the rest of your instruments after the fact.

This may sound pithy but for most EDM, a TR-707/808/909, LM-1, and LinnDrum sample pack will cover the basics. You can achieve the majority of sounds in modern music using a mixture of those drum racks, often layered with each other or analog hits for flavour. These come default with some DAWs (Ableton Live comes to mind) and it's pretty easy to find samples online.

dk2m posted:try something that I've never done before - a Helios style track. I quite enjoyed this one man THE MOON! posted:I have a huge problem with percussion. Could you be more specific with your problem with the sounds have compared to what you want, it might be sample choice or it might be the way they need to be processed to be cohesive with each other/the track, or too heavy/light etc. Also try pitching the sounds up or down, its surprising how much difference this will make to the way they gel with your track (esp kick/tom). If the million hits you have are divided into kits then they are basically different drumkits you can use which are designed to fit together. If you only find a few sounds in the million hits that work for you then just copy them into a new folder so you don't need to go through the debris. ps. Goldbaby has free samples that are good, I've bought a few packs from him as well - some great bits if you want dirty hits. Perpetual Hiatus fucked around with this message at 11:34 on Jul 13, 2014 |

Hey y'all. So, I normally write death metal, but in my spare time/boredom/in between metal albums, I decided to try my hand at electronic stuff. I'm kind of at the point where I have a few things done or nearly done, and I'm wondering if what I have here is worth pursuing further or it's just dorky garbage that sounds like someone opened up a few soft synths in Logic and called it a day. I like the direction I'm heading, even though I'd like to write dancey-er stuff in the future (hopefully get at least one out soon), but considering my forte is in aggressive music, I'm not sure how tasteful this stuff is. Also, I'm starting to hit a wall where I'm not sure how to add to these much more. First two are kind of chill/faux R&B things, third one is like...rappy? https://soundcloud.com/seraphslaughter/always-on-1 https://soundcloud.com/seraphslaughter/near https://soundcloud.com/seraphslaughter/stacked please tell me if I'm onto something or I shouldn't quit my death metal day job

Flipperwaldt posted:I like the two first ones most. Gotta ask though: are you consciously leaving space for vocals that are yet to come? If not, they all can use a bit more action. Just some vocals would work perfectly though. I didn't want there to be vocals when I started writing this stuff, but "add vocals" is the universal response I'm getting. Thing is vocals are always the thing I'm the worst at, in both performing AND mixing them, so I'm afraid I'll ruin it . They all definitely do need a bit more action though, especially in the upper range of frequencies. I suppose I could sample some vocals somehow, or see if my roommate who is a good female doom metal singer might somehow transfer onto these well. thanks for listening. "definitely not poo poo" is what I really need to know.

Flipperwaldt posted:Like it. Any chance of getting something of an extra screming guitar solo on top for a bit? Or is that too much of a departure from the intended style? Thanks man. Yeah we're gonna go back to it and "purify" it somewhat. On the last drop, that was pretty screaming after we added the pedalboard and phaser. I think we'll play with that area and try to make it more like a proper solo than a kind of extra underlying texture.

That broken groove of the guitar is a strange touch but it works and it develops into something really nice. Posting on behalf of a friend. He wants a drum machine to play along to. I showed him Auditool so he could test-drive some virtual drum machines (ie a virtual 808 and 909) and see how they work. We also had a go on a Volca Beats in a shop. He's decided he doesn't like the traditional left-to-right interface with the step sequencer at the bottom. Instead, he likes how the Machinste sampler works in Audiotool. It has a matrix with samples on the Y axis and beats on the X axis: [img]http://i.imgur.com/SwMHp7I.png][/img] As far as I can tell the Machiniste isn't based off real hardware, and I can't find anything quite like it. I showed him Ableton, but he's turned off by having to use an entire DAW, and would prefer to spend money on some hardware. I think he also just likes plugging boxes into other boxes. I think he might be better off buying an iPad and getting some fun drum machine app, but I thought I'd ask here first just in case. Is there anything available?
