It really differs from family to family. Growing up my cousins really were my closest friends, we hung out all the time. My roommates best friend from like 7-19 was his cousin.

My other roommate isn't even sure what her cousins names are, even though she knows the aunts and uncles. Maybe it had to do with amount? I had dozens of cousins, so it was either know some cousins and enjoy holidays, or not know anyone in the drat house. Roommate was pretty much an only child and same with his cousin so they were all they had. The other had brothers and her cousins had siblings so who cared.

It can vary depending on distance as well. My cousins from my mother's side are my grandmother's brother's children and their families, and I don't know all of them. They're all Irish, so I've met them only a couple times. I knew both of my paternal cousin's (Aunt's children).

If you think that, along the way, you're not going to fail... you're blind.

There's no one I've ever met, no matter how successful they are, who hasn't said they had their failures along the way.

I reconnected to some of my cousins a couple of years back, after not having much to do with them for nearly 20 years. One of them sent me a version of that, and it did seriously warm my heart. It was a nice gesture. I didn't share it, because I'm not a weirdo moron, but it was still a nice gesture which made me feel more welcome.

Now none of us talk anymore anyway because that entire side of my family is emotionally unstable and prone to meltdowns :v:

Well, in my case,

SpliffClavin posted:

had a lot to do with it. My mother absolutely despises her sisters, so she kept us isolated from them, even though we all of us live in the same city. My dad and his brother live on the other side of the country, and there's only one cousin out there anyway.

My cousins in town are basically white trash, so I'm sort of glad I didn't have much to do with them growing up, frankly. My adolescence was lovely enough, I think having constant exposure to that might have allowed me to become a drug addict like nearly all of them have been at some point or another.

I'm sure those parties with drugs and alcohol will be GREAT with no women at them. And men disappointed by said parties will be thrilled when they can literally never meet women they don't already know (because it's dangerous for women to speak to strange men)

Basically the best way for women to avoid being raped is for them all to become modestly dressed lesbians and prowl the streets in large crowds, possibly armed.

I just got back from a country with a large conservative Muslim population. There were many such groups though I can't comment on whether the women were armed under their abaya but I'm going to assume "yes" because America :911: . Also I wore an abaya and niqab and it was really comfy so I think they're onto something there. Hard to rape a woman wearing a threatening-looking black outfit that easily could conceal a rifle.

Considering the majority of sexual assaults aren't random stranger attacks, but by someone you already know, you can't even party with your opposite sex acquaintances.

What we really need is the same social system as Saudi Arabia and the dress code of the Taliban. It's the only way for women to be safe from all the men who just can't stop raping all the time.

I went on a date with this guy a few years ago. He used a very old photo of himself on the site we met on, and he restrained his crazy while we talked before. The date was horrible. He was missing teeth, was much more overweight than I expected, and he had a neckbeard. He spent the whole date talking about how ignorant republicans and Christians were, and how much he liked Dr Who.

He added me on Facebook afterwards, and I've kept him on my list because he's insane. He posts between 15-20 posts a day. He seems to think he's very intelligent, but he's really not. He dropped out of high school and went to University of Phoenix, and has absolutely no opinion on anything that's original. He reposts everything from gently caress Yeah Science, he posts memes about cats, and he's pretty much the atheist stereotype. He spends a lot of money on video games, Mt Dew, and Dr Who and Game of Thrones tee shirts, but complains about how he can't afford an AC unit. He actually started a kick starter to try and buy one.

His current focus of interest is getting on disability. He claims to have chronic back pain, citing that his back hurts after sitting in a chair for eight hours. He gets upset over not getting pain medications from doctors, whining about how they should just take his word for it since he can't afford x rays.

His big plan was to do atheist marriages. It didn't pan out.

He also posted a comment about how police should have a "dart gun" to tranquilize people with.

It should be no surprise to anyone that he looks like this.

One of the main reasons so much bullshit gets tossed around as "fact" is that the people who believe it want to believe it. I have found that no amount of logic or reasoning will inspire a certain type of person to stop believing that the president is a Muslim terrorist or that Bill and Hillary Clinton had dozens of people killed. The belief is driven by willful ignorance, and that engine is rocking a poo poo ton of horsepower.

A "satire" tag is not going to make idiots stop believing stupid poo poo.

Right? That's what you get when you added all your redneck classmates from your podunk high school. :sigh: My actual friends are much more compassionate and thoughtful. A few have actually adopted dogs from shelters or small rescues and of course cats are always showing up from someplace. I guess it's just offensive to me because I adopted a dog in the last year, and have gotten a little involved with the humane society in my county. They're good people who try their hardest, and are constantly calling out for fosters and running fundraising events. But they do have to euthanize because there are just so many. The one that I know of posted a message after they had 57 owner surrenders in one day that they could not promise that pets would be adopted and that you couldn't just dump the pet in the lobby-- you had to fill out paperwork, which apparently many of the 57 people who surrendered their pets were unhappy about. :(

I was reading an article about a study of 16-18 year olds who have had anal sex and it found that the young men didn't exactly prioritize true consent or mutuality with their girlfriends (in fact they expected it to hurt them), they just want to stick it somewhere "tighter" and immitate porn. Among both the girls and the boys it was assumed that the girl would say "no" so the boys' initial gameplan started with badgering and other persuasion/coercion techniques instead of having a discussion over what both parties would like to try or not. And if that didn't work, it was common to just stick something up there to "try it and see, baby!!"

As if that wasn't :smith: enough...
