Quickly, how do you deal with a person who says the "inflated welfare state" will destroy first world nations and lead them down a path of "government reliance and degeneracy"?

Point out that welfare is necessary to prevent the uprising of the destitute as their options become increasingly more limited. Also point out that "welfare" in the form of transfer payments is also an important part of the economy because the money is used as indirect stimulus to local businesses, such as supermarkets. Remove welfare and you remove that stimulus.

The last thing a business ever wants to do is hire more staff, but if the demand is there, that's exactly what they'll do. If he (she?) wants jobs to exist to necessitate the eradication of the welfare state, well by all means he should be advocating for creation of more demand.

Most welfare in Australia is directed at pensioners and sick people. The reason we have a welfare state is because we don't want people dying in the streets.

Has he actually singled out bludgers? You could act like you just assumed he was obviously talking about only old people, since they receive the majority of welfare. Didn't he read those great new figures the LNP were so keen to put on your tax return, about where your money's going?

His reply is that Europe is hosed and will never recover and that the Government should test Youth Allowance, DSP, Pension and Superannuation against Household income in both sharehouse and family home environments. This will ensure no one can outright rely on government payments and cause "maximum employment in all age groups". Also we must abolish the minimum wage because business is better at deciding what the minimum wage should be because they are closer to analysing costs moreso than the government ever will be. He cites his economics minor at UQ.

If he's so concerned about employment, and is talking about Joe Hockey, why not ask him about how consumer confidence has completely tumbled since the budget was released? Sure, it's all well and good to say people have to learn to be self-reliant and work up that big pile of savings so they can go 6 months with no help from the government - but while everyone's doing that, they're not going to spend any money on anything beyond basic needs! How are our good Aussie businesses supposed to stay open, if everyone's too scared to spend any money on anything fun or expensive? And how are we going to get those bludgers employed if no one can make more jobs, because those businesses can barely stay open with no one able to afford to buy anything? Consumer confidence, mate!

Man, I used to be a conservative before I left the US and realized I was a loving imbecile, and I still can no longer even jump through the necessary mental hoops to understand the mindset that welfare is bad. That being said, for some reason being from the US gets me a bit of leeway to be able to say "well but the stuff the current government is saying is exactly what my old government would say all the time" and that seems to make people stop for a minute. Then I tell them about the single digit wages. Good times.

Maybe ask him more questions about his experience with the welfare / transfer system. I had a long chat with a mate in the pub a few months back who had similar beliefs, and they all stemmed from his university days where he was ineligible for austudy, despite his family not being as well off as some others who knew the system and managed to qualify for additional support. His view was that the system needed to be targetted better because his experience showed that it wasn't. I convinced him that if the system instead allowed for all people to receive an allowance for study regardless of targeting he agreed that it would be better.

Anidav posted:His experience with the system is "all my best high school friends became bludgers" Yeah. The only way to argue with those people constructively is to widen their lens, and this is incredibly difficult if they're not willing to discuss it in good faith. My strategy is to usually ask them if it's at all possible for them to change their mind. If they say no, then stop.
