Right. I should've thought of that. :downs:

I think I remember reading somewhere that Break Record fell through the cracks because of the Index bankruptcy thing, but I'm not sure if that's true or not. The DS version's about 20 bucks on Amazon, though.

Edit: DS2 may be worse, but I really wish Joint Skill Cracks were a thing in Overclocked.

If you fight the ultimate bonus boss then you will have basically achieved TDE in a different manner then in SMT Nocturne.

Yeah, the fact that Overclocked has a compendium is wonderful. Even if all the prices are kinda insane.

It's kinda weird that the endings fall so neatly into the 3 standard categories. A couple people on Neogaf (including someone who played like every SMT game, including the proto ones on the NES) called DS's alignment system the best one outside of Nocture (which I've never played).

It's the best because the people advocating their points come of less as crazed lunatics than the usual batch of SMT alignment heroes.

They can also be neatly summarized in one sentence and most of them still come off as sympathetic, too!

  • Atsuro: "We can use them demons to make a mayor breakthrough in society!"
  • Yuzu: "Screw this, I got cold feet at the last minute!"
  • Gin: "I want Tokyo to be the chill place that I started to like thanks to her"
  • Amane: "I want humanity to survive!"
  • Naoya: "You hosed with the wrong family, G. :black101:"

DS1 doesn't really benefit from having a compendium. You only get three active skills and three passive skills on your demons. And the game allows you periodically the chance to rewrite one of the active skills to whatever you want. So creating a "perfect" demon is just a matter of making sure you have the right passive skills, which you will because you'll generally have the couple of most useful skills like phys reflect on as many demons as you can. Most of the high level demons you get in DS1 don't really lend themselves to broken skill combos anyway. It's mostly just better stats you're getting.

DS2, on the other hand, allows for a lot more broken stuff in demon fusion, especially in the endgame (being immune to all damage but almighty is the baseline for a decent demon at the end of the game). It can be nice to have the compendium in that game.

Also, DS2 is a much better game mechanically. It's only in the story that it's hugely inferior to the first one.

You probably should. In many ways it's an inferior game (even in the gameplay department) but it does enough interesting things that it will still scratch the itch leftoever from DS1. If anything it's even more fun to break this time around, like putting Evil Flow together with Jungo and Assassinate.

Eh, DeSu 2 was better to actually play, but the plot, atmosphere, and everything was miles better in the first game. I'd still take Overclocked over DeSu2, unless Break Record does some phenomenal stuff with it.

Devil Survivor 2 just feels better optimized overall. I played Overclocked and DS2 back to back, and stuff like the mission start/mission complete popping in and out and skipping fusions go by so much faster in DS2. Overclocked is kind of a chore to replay because of this and all the escort missions and required dispatches making it hard to solo run.

I really disliked how gimmicky the bosses were in DeSu2, which is my main gameplay beef with it. Also the fact that getting attacked by a ranged attack counted as you fighting and thus pushed you back on the turn counter. My MC walked a couple spaces in one of the maps and then proceeded to not have a turn for like five entire turn rotations because they kept knocking him back on the turn order. It was freakin lame!

Stupid question, in P3P, how is the weapon power for fused weapons calculated? I've figured out that the Persona used decides the ability, but is the power and accuracy of the weapon just based on the original level of the used persona, as well? Putting it another way: Would a level 19 Berith make any different of a weapon from a level 14 one?

This pretty much tells you everything you want to know.

TLDR: the main thing affecting a weapon fusion result are the level category (for every ten levels) and the Arcana of the Persona. Fool Personas provide special bonuses, as well as specific Personas that create special weapons, no matter what their level.

One thing DeSu2 does better than the first game is not forcing you to wait until the last day to get all the cool party members. I do prefer the dark atmosphere of DS1, but DS2 has a much better cast of characters overall, assuming Keita gets left behind at a bus stop somewhere.

I liked that you can actually have access to most of the playable characters throughout the game instead of dumping them all in your lap on the final day.

The gravity of the plot never really lands and the Death Clips were dumb and gratuitous.

Not even the anime bothered with Keita, from what I heard.

DS2 did a lot to strengthen the first game's mechanics. The Social Links are much improved, and now feel even better than Persona's, you don't spend the first three days playing loving musical chairs with your fourth party slot, and cracking skills is a lot easier. That said, the plot wasn't great, and it felt like a lot of the social links plain forgot that literal hell on earth was going on at the time.

Revolver/Gunman Jesus is a thing, yeah. Not sure what was up with his design but considering his role I think it's partially intentional.

Never actually played it but I think that was to have him contrast the protagonist. Takaya (that's his name, right?) embodies the superficial aspects of Jesus, while the MC has a lot of the inner traits associated with Jesus (and the whole dying for everyone's sins thing).

I'd taken a break from Devil Survivor Overclocked, and just now gotten back to it. Other day, I got to where Honda first shows up. This game has a severe problem with the voice actors really not sounding right for the characters. Kaido is one, and Honda in particular sounds about 10 years younger than he seems like he's supposed to be.

Here are some really basic and general things, if your issues are more specific than this feel free to ask.

  • Like any SMT game, don't let your demons stagnate. You ought to be continuously rolling out new demons to your teams as they become available. That's not at all to say you have to grind like mad and make or buy 12 of every demon, but if you upgrade your roster a little at a time and spend your macca wisely you should be okay.
  • Especially for your first playthrough, it sometimes makes sense to grind free battles for macca or levels. Sometimes free battles also add new demons to the auction. You'll also get more magnetite bonuses this way- use them with an eye to adding abilities you want to fuse onto your next round of demons.
  • Even if you don't need free battles at a given time, check them for new skill cracks as they become available. Skill crack obsessively and you'll have a much easier time.
  • There are a few missions that really stress having demons with movement abilities (ie devil speed, flight, phantasm, switch) and if you run into a difficult one it usually makes more sense to go get one or several of those demons than to bang your head against doing the fight without.

I like DSO quite a bit. I played through the original years ago and then picked up the remake during the recent e-shop sale, and I had a nice leisurely time replaying it since I knew the playstyle they expected of you and could anticipate a lot of the dick moves. Especially if you like other SMT games I think it's worth sticking out the initial awkwardness of getting used to the format.

- Use the hunt/devour type skills a lot because they give you more AP when defeating enemies
- Use the skills which shield your party from elements
- For characters it is a good idea to get the Mantras for the element that the character is weak against, rather than their "primary" element that they start off with skills in. This is because the mantras for each element teach you skills that let you be resistant to that element. For example Serph is weak to fire so if you have him learn the fire mantras you can have him learn and equip the skill Resist Fire and eventually better versions like Null Fire, allowing you to negate his weakness preventing the enemy from getting extra press turns.

- There are a few fights where you will most likely need to have certain Void element skills equipped on characters

- Your save file from the end of DDS1 can carry over into DDS2, it will give you bonuses like money based on how much you have at the end of DDS1, special equipment based on defeating the optional bosses, and unlock a certain secret thing in DDS2 depending on the choices you make during cutscenes throughout DDS1.

Be wary of playing them back to back. Although they are two halves of a single story, the inherent gameplay reset of switching to the second game caused me some major burn out that took awhile to get over.

I actually haven't played the 2nd one because though it was a decent game I found the gameplay to be kind of dull compared to the other games in the series that involve demon/persona management, and didn't have a great urge to go to the 2nd one outside of wanting to know about the story. Though my impression of it being a bit dull is probably enhanced by the fact that my copy had some weird lag issues where the character's demon forms took a long time to load, dragging out most of the random battles and status screens longer than they should have been.

I finished Raidou 1 last week and liked it a lot except for sometimes getting mad about demons running in place instead of helping me. The story in that game is fully nuts and it's weird that no one ever talks about how nuts it is

Then I bought Raidou 2 and the gameplay is totally different, like even the attack buttons changed, and I had to give it a break because I was trying to play it like the first game and getting my poo poo tossed in the tutorial like an idiot.

Raidou 2 is great because I play like a champion and pump all of my points into Luck and let my critical hits do the talking, then for the first fifth of the game the story tanks your Luck and it's like I was level 1 all over again :downs:

Then you get to manipulate your Luck in the totally opposite direction and all of a sudden I was unstoppable.
