christ.... this would have saved me SO MUCH time... http://www.wsusoffline.net/ according to some random Facebook commenter this tool enables you to create your own service packs for a variety of MS products. I'm currently downloading a set for 7 x86, x64, as well as Office 2010. Will be game changing if it works. And yeah, an actual update server would probably be better but this could be a very good stopgap.

Wsus takes 10 minutes to install! That said, wsusofflinehas been handy for getting updates and dsim'ing them into .wim images or mdt. It works well. ticketchat- thanks for reassuring me that I'm not insane. I keep trying to make my existing workplace better instead of just finding a new workplace. HalloKitty posted:Eek. I'd get out a silicon sealant gun and block that poo poo up thoroughly, that's a nice problem waiting to happen. I made them send out another engineer and fix it properly. This time I got an actual OpenReach engineer and a new drop run from the gutter. In fairness, it's probably now the only thing in that shithole house that has been done properly, even as it was in that photo is insignificant compared to things like the boiler that leaks through a hole in the floor onto a 240V mains socket and the gas meter. A month later I moved out anyway, to a place that still has builders in sorting things out and, well, it's a shame that the builders cut the cable and removed the master socket, isn't it. Lucky for me this meant they had to run a new drop and I got to choose where the master socket went. The engineer didn't care as I got him to re-use an existing hole through the wall saving him some effort. (It still drops from 7000/1000 to 6200/90 when it rains though, expecting OpenReach this afternoon to hopefully sort it. This BTW is why I haven't posted in these threads in ages, and have ignored the last 2000 posts in each. Lum fucked around with this message at 14:15 on Aug 22, 2014 |

When my DSL was playing up a while back, I had an OpenReach engineer come, he replaced the entire line to the house from the pole, including installing a master socket. That helped a lot. Especially since the old wiring was Post Office, and had no master socket. The joys!

Still no sign of today's engineer, supposed to come between 1-6 so a few hours yet.

For example, they integrated change management, which my company didn't use because we were very small and they'd be like 1 person each. However you can't disable them, and just by creating an incident off of a problem ticket, it automatically assumes you want to make change requests with your 0 available approval boards.

Had a customer log a sev 1 ticket which had a 700 page report from their auditors attached with 'please advise on the parts which reference your product'. Err how about "no". When told if they have a specific question then log a ticket for it, they took it a bit literally. They managed to log over 200 tickets (one for each page) before we managed to make them stop as they weren't replying. Just to make things even more fun this was Christmas day when support is down to bare bones levels and management are like unicorns. Normally you wouldn't get a single call on Christmas, so 200 caused a bit of a sense of humour failure. On the plus side my metrics for that month were fantastic with an extra 200 closures.

quick background: we store data tapes. Sometimes we assist clients of ours with restoring data for legal matters and the like, for a fee. Sometimes, we win our competitors clients because they come to us for independent data restoration jobs. This ticket is the latter. The client uses a MSP to manage their IT. They have a backup system in place and the client wants us to independently verify the backups are usable in the event of a disaster. They have a pretty standard setup - AD server, Exchange, SQL server and a file server. all done in vCenter. I restore all the servers .vmdk's successfully, except the AD server - BE2012 fails to create the virtual disk. I tell the MSP that it fails, and supply the error code in an effort to get some support in case they have done it a special way. They tell me to patch BE2012 as its a known issue. I already did this, but do it again out of chance that it failed. Again, it fails. We have a conference call and I grant remote access to the client to view the SQL server, as requested in the contract. This works fine. It was created in vCentre, but we only have Workstation installed/licensed. We got it up and running by creating a blank VM in VMWare workstation and then attaching the existing virtual disk. We have done this for all our previous restore jobs. MSP gets mad that AD server wont restore and they offer to do it internally to check. they are successful. I re-iterate that it is failing to create the disk, and thus the restore is not successful. He asks me how I am restoring it, and I say we are doing it to VMDK and then attaching the .vmdk to a blank VM in Workstation. He goes on to say that its not working because we are not restoring to the vCenter platform and Workstation is not compatible. I once again tell him the data fails to restore from the tapes we were provided, and that its not even touching the Workstation platform. Workstation is not the problem here. He then proceeds to request us to purchase and install a licensed version of vCenter for the sake of this job. I then send him screen shots, CC'd to the client, showing all the other servers working in Workstation with no issues. I also send a screenshot of the error from BE2012, and the job monitor showing the numerous attempts. I am waiting for his response.

I'm really starting to like sales people selling next business day contracts by promising the following: 1: It's always next business day, no matter what. 2: Even if the part needed isn't on the correct continent, it's still next business day. 3: The tech will fix all software issues. 4: They (We) will also handle all back ups and reinstalling the os no matter if you are using some weird freak hybrid of windows that only your company gets and no one has any installation media for any more. 5: You can call without doing any troubleshooting, and you do not have to do any troubleshooting at all, the tech will come do that for you. 6: The computer will be fixed next business day no matter what. Like there are ways to get this, don't get me wrong, but you don't get it for 100€ when you buy one computer. That costs 400€. You just don't. loving sales people.
