So tomorrow I'm going to start picking up components for my new pc. A question for those in the know... How well does Stalker play with Windows 8? I wish I could say I'm spending all this money on a cool new system for other games but I'm literally getting it for stalker. Windows 8 looks cool and I was a bit of a late adopter of windows 7 because I'm a luddite, so what's the verdict?

I'm on Windows 8.1 and I don't have any issues with any of the Stalker games.
I'm not sure how familiar you are with Windows 8, but a lot of people aren't fond of the new interface (myself being one of them). If you find you don't like it too make sure you download Classic Shell. It makes everything like Windows 7 interface wise.

Also, SSD's are great (I finally got one around 6 months ago) but don't expect game loading times to go down too dramatically. They're great for installing your OS and common files on though, I can boot up after pressing the start button within a few seconds.

I've still been working with the Clear Sky source code, and I finally got one version I found to compile. The version I was trying before was bugged as hell.
I made the following changes to it:

*Added different sounds for reloading a weapon with a partial mag vs. an empty mag.
To use add "snd_reload_empty" to any weapon ltx you want.
*Added possibility of anm_reload_empty to automatic weapons.
*Added bloodmarks (not working) and actor shadow (looks great) on DX9 renderer

Authors: Nick Galko, K.D., jketiynu

I am really hoping someone with Platinum could do me a huge favor and ask a Moderator here if it's okay to post the working source code.
Please make sure you tell them that people already were given GSC's unofficial blessing to use the SoC source code, and it appears fine to use the CS code as well. I had contacted the moderator of the official GSC forum and he said he'd contact GSC for me and see what they thought, and I haven't received a response in over a week, which to me tells me they don't want to come out and say it's okay, but unofficially it is.

Also: If anyone here knows C++ or knows of someone that knows C++ and would like to work on an open source project with a team of people let me know. There's a big growing list of features to add to CS, and ones to be ported to COP when that's released.

Here are a few new ideas I had:
*Replace Global Illumination system with a more modern one. Should actually be relatively simple as everything that we know r2_gi and related functions does is only in a few files. It should be easy to replace with a modern day, good looking system.
*Give decals ability to have bump and bump# maps. That way bulletholes can take chunks out of things and blood can have a nice specular map to look glossy in the sunlight.
*Add Cook-Torrance lighting as an option for models through the SDK.
*3D shell casings (perfectly possible, I just don't know where to start and I don't even officially know C++)
*Non-hostile wildlife in the Zone (I think I can do this, but the models and animations I can't)

On the SSD front, my pc literally loads in 7 seconds. It's amazing.

I know a lot of people don't like the new start thing, I'm not particularly bothered by it and think it looks cool.

Also PayPal are the loving worst. Used it to get my motherboard and GTX 770 and it's sort of now stuck in a weird purgatory where I'm not sure what is happening so I have to phone them to see what the hell is going on with my transfer so I don't end up being charged twice.

This is my build so hopefully it will somewhat tame stalker

After I got my SSD I put CoP on it, my load times went from over a minute to ~10 seconds. YMMV I guess

Nice pick on the samsung EVO, the 250gb one just dropped in price here. Only 8gb ram, a mini tower? also why not a current gen i7?

Do you have access to http://www.microcenter.com/ and http://www.newegg.com/ ? $1300 should go a lot farther than that.

I really don't want a huge machine as I'm living in a rather dinky place and it might come in handy during winter to have a larger thing, I think the prodigy is a very sexy case.

Only went with 8GB RAM as most of the games I have and can afford at the moment don't use much more. same deal with the i5, it should be plenty particularly if I overclock it a bit.

In addition to the WD red I have two salvage hard drives from my laptop that are 500gb a piece so there's plenty of room for my porn mods.

allright man but that thing is going to get hot, especially if you plan on OCing on air. I have that CPU fan + 5 of fans that mount to it, its not that effective at about a 8deg (C) imporvement over the stock intel cooler.

lost alpha started artifacting from GPU heat, i had no stutter issues (in SLAM DX10.1 forced maxed settings -grass)

Well my prodigy arrived today and it was just as sexy as I imagined it to be. Installed the two drives from my dead laptop in the side panel. Still waiting on the PSU, GPU and the last hard drive to arrive.

Sweet stalker I have missed you so.

Hopefully this rig will allow me to make decent quality videos without killing my framerate totally. Last time I recorded something it was the Dead City part of my mod and the constant warfare and explosions tanked any chance of recording anything decent.

Since you got a GTX770 you can use Nvidia Shadowplay to make videos. It doesn't really affect your framerate at all.

Samsung evo is the only way to go.
I don't understand why you went with 8 gigs of ram though. Going 16 costs like 20 bucks extra. Also go with an i7.

Seriously though having stalker on an SSD is mandatory due to the obscene load times. And even on an SSD the load times are obscene. As in it takes every other game barely noticeable times to load whereas stalker actually takes a few seconds.

Don't worry about it, I have an i5 and it works slick. Don't worry about the ram either. With both items the lost gain ratio isn't exactly defined at all because there are more things to it than just future proofing. And as for future proofing when the time comes to replace a CPU or a GPU the money you invest won't go much towards putting off it becoming obsolete.

16GB is good if you open huge databases regularly and want to be able to search them. Otherwise you're unlikely to be running anything even approaching 8GB used most of the time.

As for an i7, how much extra is that and for how much more performance?

I use Shadowplay and I love the function that lets it rolling record the last x minutes of gameplay, so you can save it off if something cool happens.
Anyway, if you use that tool I would suggest you change where it stores the temp video data so it isn't constantly writing to your SSD if that's where it wants to put it by default.

I was being slightly facetious. I had a very limited budget and even with this I do not have enough to get a proper monitor for the time being.

I guess I could set up some sort of PayPal thing if people wanted to contribute to a 'buy ddraig a monitor and some beer' fund, but that seems like a rather dickish thing to ask. I always have mixed feelings about that kind of thing (especially when it comes to stuff like the Misery dev team :v: ) so I would feel like a terrible hypocrite.

e: the GTX 770 is nearly twice the size of my motherboard, that's pretty crazy.

Still waiting on the power supply to arrive.

Get a half decent IPS panel, nothing worse than a lovely TN panel that washes out half the screen if your head is an inch too high or too low, and has uneven brightness when your head is as the right level anyway... especially in dark games like STALKER.

Autumn Aurora 2 v2.50 is now out. http://www.moddb.com/mods/autumn-aurora-compilation-mod/downloads/autumn-aurora-2

quote:

graphics/sound improvements:

New tree models / textures (Absolute Nature)
New weather system (AtmosFear, with randomly blowouts)
Lots of new sounds
Lots of new textures

Gameplay:

Some new weapons and items (not many, maybe 10)
Artifacts detectable only by detectors
Repairs by traders and kits
Sleeping possible in some places
New UI/Hud based on CoP one
Hands change the texture depending on the suit we're wearing
Same with the mask hud (dynamic hud)
Random stashes
screen effectors on irradiation, low health and stamina
applying medkits, eating or using repair kits takes time.
Some bugfixes like empty stashes and non-disappearing mission markers.
And many, many other fixes, addons, tweaks etc.

Changelog of v2.05:

randomly happened blowouts (separate day/nights cycles/). Also underground blowouts are possible.
harder gameplay in the beginning of the game (in Cordon). We removed most of the stuff which makes that gameplay it's easier directly after the start new game (merceneray suit on the attic etc). We haven't touched gameplay any further to keep the balance from 2.04 version which in our opinion and also yours was almost perfect.
changed rewards for random tasks in the beginning phase of the game (no more ridiculous situations when you've killed few mutants and you've received Mama's Beads artifact).
new animations for a majority of firearms (AK74u, AK74, Abakan, Binoculars, BM16, Colt1911, Fort, G36, PB Pistol, PM Pistol, Vintorez) - thanks to r_populik and AMK Forum community [all credits with separate nicknames are included]
new ambient sounds (outdoor and underground). New ambient sounds sections. COMPLETELY new thunder sounds. Stormy days are totally atmospheric now.
improved environment textures (they're sharpened on mip-map levels to keep clarity from the distance. New rock's texture)
dynamic messages sent by stalkers, completely rewritten from the beginning to match Autumn Aurora 2 feel.
new music on some levels
re-edited weather transition config with more natural weather transition. No more situations when it's raining fron the clear sky.
Sakharov has old, vanilla one model.
reinstated time limit for random tasks to avoid CTDs and broken savegames related to PDA task overload.
fixed dangerous vanilla bug with "agroprom_tasks" in CTD's log (thanks to barin)
fixed bug with non-exploded wall on the Military Warehouses
attachable silencer to AK74u
tiny easter egg from us to discover :-)

In other news, I'm finally playing Lost Alpha, and it hasn't crashed more than vanilla SoC, so that's good. What's not so good is the sometimes dumb mission design. When I want to rescue that mechanic from the Sin guys, he proceeded to immediately run into the military guys at the bridge and got sniped. Sidorovich then complemented me on a job well done, remarking on how there wasn't even a scratch on him. Now I can't use the mechanic. Are there more of them? Also, this is more of a vanilla complaint as well, but I hate that the Bar is locked until you do the Agroprom mission. It's an open world game, I feel like I should be able to go where I want to go.

You can load them into AVIdemux (http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/) and that will let you cut the video up. I'm yet to do anything other than that, so I can't comment on how easy it is to apply filters to speed up or slow down, or whatever else it is you can do. It didn't look that versatile, though, and for anything especially clever I'd probably load it into a better video editor.

I set the video output to "Mpeg4 AVC (x264)" and the audio to "MP3 (lame)" as I have LAME installed (and I assume it needs that in order for me to chose it but I could be wrong.)
You can fiddle with the video codec options to decrease file size, and if you plan to upload to Youtube they tell you some preferred settings on there somewhere you can try and duplicate. When I did this, Youtube told me it didn't like the format completely and that I might have trouble streaming. I fixed this by running MP4FastStart (http://www.datagoround.com/lab/) over the final video before upload to Youtube, but I've no idea if it really helped or not.

I just tested it on a short test video dump and it quartered the video size for no loss of quality. Fiddling with the video codec settings could easily reduce that further if need be.

Since there's been no concerted effort to so I'd kind of like to port a few lightweight mods to lost alpha. OGSM will be my first one. I imagine a lot of it is already in lost alpha since OGSM is a prototype twice removed of the LA concept but it has a few neat features that would work in concert with LA.

Either that or AMK.
