Alright I have a bit of tough one for you guys but I have faith you guys will kill it.

So I just read 20th century boys and when I started it I was convinced it was a masterpiece, however after each time skip I became less and less interested in it. I figured out that what I actually wanted was a fairly grounded piece set in post war Japan. I am looking for anything set in 50s 60s or 70s Japan that includes at least minor cultural or historical aspects.

Although barring that I will take anything set in Japan during those time periods.

EDIT: In return let me leave this recommendation of exactly the kind of thing I might be looking for and a wonderful manga in it's own right. A Drifting Life is a auto-biographical story of Yoshihiro Tatsumi's life as a mangaka from 1945 to 1960. It's quite excellent.
Have you looked through any of Tatsumi's other collections? I would start there. If you're interested the works of less grounded gekiga artists, you should look up Seiichi Hayashi, Shigeru Mizuki, and Yoshiharu Tsuge.

You should also read Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms it starts in Hiroshima in 1955 and ends in 2004. It is only one volume long so hopefully you won't have the same problem with flagging interest due to the time skips.
Uh, I will heartily second this recommendation.

I thought there was plenty of focus on the war myself. Probably the best handling of war in an anime that I've seen too, given (mega-spoilers, do not read) it correctly doesn't dwell on the result of the war, but rather the reasons behind it and the consequences it brings, and shows every side as varying degrees of sympathetic without trying to make you cheer against the protagonists.

The war was certainly not irrelevant, true, but I would reiterate that the main focus of Simoun wasn't on how the fighting progressed.Given that at least a couple of major developments happen mostly off-screen or are only discussed by the characters in passing. You're rightfully pointing out that we do get some context for the conflict though, and the consequences are explored even when it's finally over, but most of the screen time is used to develop the cast and deal with their own personal issues. In terms of sympathy, I think they did a good job humanizing the enemy priestesses and showing their cultural differences, but could have tried to widen the scope a little more. In any case, I agree that it's an interesting series and worth checking out.

War spoilers. Eh, I don't really think that represents a lack of focus on the war overall, so much as making a conscious decision to focus on certain parts of it. The personal side of war was what the show thought was important, and thought it would benefit from showing, and part of that is because Simulacrum losing was explicitly portrayed as a positive thing, so framing the war on a national/macro-scale from Simulacrum's perspective would heavily muddle the messages and themes of the show while distracting from the interpersonal relationship stuff. Instead it focused on the personal side of the conflict. I mean, practically the entire plot is focused on the war. Certainly the characters and their interactions are huge parts of the series, and it explores a lot of other things like gender, religion, etc, but plot-wise it's almost all war. I don't think just because it didn't have a war-room and it didn't end with a climactic battle, it wasn't a focus.

At this point I suppose we're just choosing to frame and emphasize things a little differently. One way or another, it is indeed a series where the personal side of the war was the important part, as you've said. That's also why I think the characters are at its core. It's a portrayal that the viewers used to more traditional representations of war in anime might find refreshing, as well as those who aren't particularly interested in warfare to begin with.

Considering who directed it I don't think it was unintentional. His only other "serious" work was Blood-C and everything else is stuff like Hare+Guu and Squid-Girl. I'm guessing that the staff for both Blood-C and Another, of which they shared a lot of even for being produced by different studios, took one look at how serious the source material took themselves and how silly they were and had fun with them.

It is. It may not have proper source material like a book or comic but Blood-C was created by Clamp for IG. So I doubt they were making the show by the seat of their pants like most original TV anime.

Hi, non-anime fan here. I'm not very big on anime, but I watched a couple recently on netflix that were great and I want to see more like them. I watched Samurai Champloo which was really good, and also Trigun and the trigun movie, which I also thought was really good. I've also been watching Space Dandy as it comes out and I love it, and I know Watanabe made Cowboy Bebop and everyone is going to recommend I should watch that, and I'm going to.

But aside from Cowboy Bebop, any other kind of good comedy/action animes that aren't about high schoolers? My friend tried to get me into Kill la Kill but I never really got it. I watched Attack on Titan too which was OK i guess. Bonus points if it's on Netflix, but from what I can tell most of what netflix has looks bad.

Watch Black Lagoon or Gurren Lagaan.

Trigun: Badlands Rumble was good fun, but it seems weird that it was created. It doesn't really do anything to extend the anime's storyline, it's just something that could easily have been slotted in as three/four episodes somewhere midway through the series.

Baccano! is great and has an amazing dub. It might be on Netflix? They rotate their animes fairly often...yeah, looks like it's not. It's on Hulu, though!

Let's see, opening up Netflix Anime...these aren't all action/comedy, just good stuff in general.

Psycho-Pass is on there and a lot of folks around here like it; I haven't seen it. Dub is available. This is action/suspense.
Attack on Titan, likewise, is there and is well-liked around here. Subs only. Action.
Eden of the East is on there and dubbed. It's quite good but not perfect if you want relationship drama and conspiracy thriller.
Princess Jellyfish is on there and dubbed, and is a shoujo show so it's also going to be about relationships, but in a different way.
Spice and Wolf is on there and dubbed. It's quite good but slow-paced relationship stuff in a fantasy world. (Also, economics.)
Fullmetal Alchemist (and FMA: Brotherhood) are both on there. They're both actiony and have comedy, but may not be your cup of tea. Technically, no high schoolers, but they're that age.

Also, yeah, seconding Black Lagoon, you'll love it.

It's not comedy and questionably action, but Death Note is basically my go-to rec for people who don't like or watch anime. It's on Netflix with both Japanese and English audio options, and though I haven't seen much of it, I hear the dub is very good.

Black Lagoon, Tiger and Bunny, Outlaw Star are basically the same genre as Watanabe's stuff / Trigun.

Psycho-Pass and Ghost in the Shell are more drama/suspense than comedy. Terror in Resonance and Kids on the Slope were also made by Watanabe and are supposedly pretty good, although also more drama than comedy. Death Note is similar except more for kids/young teenagers/14 year olds. Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood, I haven't seen the original but I think most people agree it's not as good, also it's not in HD) is an action show mostly for that kids demographic, but is very good. I'd compare it favorably to Avatar/Korra. Both Death Note and Fullmetal Alchemist are not like the stuff I'm assuming you're referring to when you say "about high schoolers", they're more like Attack on Titan. Gurren Lagann is sort of like Kill la Kill except less pornographic.

Uh, I wouldn't really say FMAB is for kids. Like, teenagers sure, but not kids. One of the major factors driving the plot is a brutal ethnic genocide half of the main characters were involved in and it gets pretty brutal in the last half when it comes to violence.

The first season, Bakemonogatari, isn't that bad. The snail and snake girls have some troubling bits to them but nothing that will make you turn the show off. It crosses a lot of pretty gross lines and then goes "of course Araragi doesn't actually mean it." So depending on whether you believe him or not, this protagonist you're supposed to identify with is either an incestuous pedophilic toothbrushing fetishist or just a teenager with massive personal boundary issues.

The sister tooth brushing is a one time thing. There's more skeevy stuff but at least in the two seasons I've seen that's the worst it gets (I mean, it goes on the longest and is probably the most uncomfortable). In any case, those scenes, as rightfully infamous as they are, are a very very small part of the series, and you shouldn't let their existence stop you from watching it. Especially the first season, as the scene you saw is in the second.
