There's usually some good positions on here (and I got my first post-college job from this thread!) so here goes again!

My experience: 8 total years in IT, 4 years in networking with one year in a network engineer/security position and another in a network/systems admin position, 1 year in project management

What I'm looking for: A more advanced network engineering role, particularly in a consulting, datacenter, or wireless environment; am interested in management or systems engineer positions (as they relate to networking) too.

Where I'm looking: Currently looking mainly in the DC/NOVA/Baltimore and Seattle areas, but I'm not really tied down anywhere

Where I live: Technically Arlington, VA, but I was uprooted to go overseas so I can really pack up and move anywhere in a week or two

When I can start: Mid September

What are my requirements: FTE, but otherwise I'm flexible

Can be reached via: PM

Don't know if you already looked here but General Dynamics has some Network Engineering type openings in Montgomery County, MD (I know because I applied to one)

https://secure.resumeware.net/gdns_rw/gdns_web/job_search.cfm as it won't let me link to the search results. Not totally in the spirit of the thread but there are some network engineer jobs listed, it looks like they might have a location in Silver Spring opening if they win a bid

I love my current job, but I don't love my pay rate being at what it currently is. Bosses aren't budging despite me trying to save money for them, and I need to get out before the boss gets a sexual harassment suit filed against him.

My experience: Several years of personal work for a small list of people, 1 year full time employment as a Jr. Sysadmin/Help Desk role. My current official title is Systems Infrastructure Specialist.

What I'm looking for: Movement up the ladder and more experience with networks and Server administration, but nothing too far outside of a working knowledge as training at my current job has been slow.

Where I'm looking: Philadelphia Metro area, but not completely tied down. If the offer is great, almost willing to go anywhere.

Where I live: Outside of Philadelphia, in NJ. 20 minute train ride into center city, hour drive to the shore.

When I can start: Any time.

What are my requirements: Full Time employment, weekends on call doesn't bother me so much as long as it's paid. Don't mind travelling.

Happy(ish) with my current position, not so happy with the company. Not actively looking yet, but would be interested in talking about potential positions.

My experience: 7 years in IT covering helpdesk, SMB jack-of-all-trades stuff, Systems Administrator in an education environment (dealing with everything from procurement, networking, AD, software deployment etc.), now consulting for SME customers in Mac/AD integration, small VMware cluster projects, MDM deployments, Office 365 migrations etc.

What I'm looking for: An internal role in a place with larger budgets than those who use consultants to do their IT work for them. I'd like to get more into virtualization and networking, anywhere that would assist me working towards a VCP / CCNA would be great.

Where I'm looking: Currently work inside zone 1 in London, wouldn't want to change that.

Where I live: About a 40 minute commute away

When I can start: I want to get to October/November time before I give up on the current position, that marks a year since we were acquired and is a good indication of whether things are going to improve.

What are my requirements: Full time, pay and benefits in line with the rest of this city

Can be reached via: PM, or reply and I'll email you

My experience: 1 year as a data center technician for a ~13 year old hosting company that tripled in size this year. Fairly new to IT but I'm a quick learner. After only 3 months at this job I was left alone for 2 months to handle over 1500 servers by myself while also being on call 24/7 (insane workloads are part of the reason I want out of this job...). Lots of experience with troubleshooting both at work and in my personal life. Basic networking, Linux, and Python knowledge. I've managed a few build outs by myself as well.

What I'm looking for: Ideally I want a Jr. SysAdmin position that would allow me to work from home, however I'm pretty much open to anything at this point.

Where I'm looking: SF Bay Area mostly, but willing to relocate for the right position especially if it's in Austin, Portland, or Seattle.

Where I live: San Jose, CA

When I can start: October/November of this year. We're about to start a 1000+ server build out in September and I would feel like a dick if I abandoned my team before that was finished.

What are my requirements: Must be full time and stable with good medical benefits

My experience: Spent close to nine years working at Lockheed Martin as a Software Test Engineer, testing both ground and flight software written in Ada, Java and C++. My most recent position was as a Software Quality Assurance Analyst for a proprietary trading firm in Chicago, testing in-house trading software written in C#. I am currently enrolled in a course on Selenium IDE/RC/Webdriver to learn automated testing. Additionally, I consider myself a junior iOS developer "in training". I completed an iOS boot camp back in April of this year and am currently enrolled in a course on Swift in anticipation of the release of iOS 8.

What I'm looking for: After being out of work for over two years (for reasons I will go into if you decide to contact me), I am absolutely open to an entry-level role as a Software Quality Assurance Analyst in order to get my career back on track. Becoming an iOS developer is a long-term goal I have in mind; unfortunately I do not have an app in the Apple Store, which I understand is a minimum requirement to be considered for roles in iOS development.

Where I live: Chicago, IL

Where I'm looking: Chicago, Denver, Austin or San Diego

When I can start: Immediately if the position is in Chicago (city, not the burbs), otherwise late October/early November.

What are my requirements: Flexible between full-time and contract-to-hire if the position is in Chicago, otherwise full-time with benefits if elsewhere.

not the analytical engine
I’m looking to break into the NYC programming world. Goons have been a huge help with the process and it’s time to go to work.

My experience: I’ve spent this year building web apps while teaching myself JavaScript, D3.js, HTML5, Python, and a bit of web audio. I’m a beginner who learns fast and cares about efficiently writing readable code (since I’m doing everything). I grew up designing simple PC games and in my grad program I wrote Python/MATLAB/bash scripts to help simulate sound in crystals. I enjoyed being a two-time teaching assistant and I’m comfortable switching between public speaking, group work, and long-term solitary nerd focus. Last year I realized that what really drives me is building user-friendly tools and interactive graphs, and I’m willing to quit science and start at the bottom of the programming industry.

What I'm looking for: An internship or entry-level position in web development, science-related startups, or data visualization. I’m happy with temporary or contract work.

Where I'm looking: New York City.

Where I live: Ithaca NY. I can easily interview in NYC.

When I can start: Any time with three weeks notice.

What are my requirements: Full time. The job can be temporary or contracted.

Job Opening

Who: Rapattoni Corporation. Smallish (150 employee) software development company. Publishes a web-app.

Where: Simi Valley, CA (North of LA / SFV area)

What: Senior Systems Administrator

Qualifications:
  • "Minimum 3 years" working operations in a 24/7/365

  • Windows Server 2003 through 2012 R2 (yes we use 2003 in production still)

  • Lots of IIS. Position is almost all IIS in my opinion but the HR posting doesn't quite agree.

  • Your basic systems admin stuff: Exchange, AD, Group Policy, etc. We use Office 365 in a hybrid (exchange is on-prem) deployment. Should be able to decipher basic Powershell scripts.

  • VMWare: We have two 8-host cluster environments that service production and corporate networks. I don't think they really care about the VCP but it couldn't hurt. The current team can mostly handle the VMWare stuff but if we ever had to do any major cluster modifications we would need some outside help (or you).

  • Cisco: We use all Cisco gear, but the environment is very basic. We have two layer 3 devices (6509s), probably about 15 switches max. They really want the CCNP but it would be useless in our environment since we have about 5 VLANs and the MSP that handles our Colocation/Prod environment also handles most of the publicly facing networking stuff. No OSPF, EIGRP, and you would probably never deploy a new VLAN. I don't think they really took a look at the CCNP exam objectives, and instead just knee-jerked out a "We have a Cisco device, we need a CCNP".

  • Storage: We have a NetApp SAN. 4 head units, I think about 15TB total. You would be the only person on the team with strong knowledge of the SAN/NetApp so IMO this is probably the most important thing along with knowing your way around IIS. I imagine this comes with the territory but knowing about Fiberchannel/iSCSI is a big plus too.

  • Linux: We have about 7-8 machines total running Linux in prod (mixture of Ubuntu and FreeBSD), and we have a team member already who is pretty strong in that department. Would be nice if you knew your way around the filesystem and could google whatever you didn't know - It's on the posting but it really wouldn't be that big a deal if you had 0 linux experience. We have a software load balancer running on a Linux box (Stingray SteelApp or Zeus Traffic Manager or whatever they're calling it now) that would be good for you to know your way around as well.

Responsibilities:
Basically the department is the first contact when something doesn't work, even though it's supposed to be the QA team. The web app is pretty large, there's a lot of duct tape, and a fair bit of legacy technology. The expectation is any any candidate, Senior or not, will need around 3-6 months to get up to speed and be able to contribute. We also handle most internal desktop support as users don't have local admin. There's another department for excel macros etc, we primarily do anything that involves admin rights. As the Senior, you would have 2-3 people under you handling most of this but there is escalation at times. Knowledge of Visual Studio/TFS would be big here, in my opinion, and if you're confident with those I would mention that in an interview. Primarily you would be ensuring "99.9%" uptime for the app and heading various internal upgrade projects. We're transitioning from PBX+Asterisk+Lync into a full on Lync environment and we'd like to get our prod servers updated from 2003 to 2012 R2 sometime soon - just to give you an idea of where we're at right now.

The good:
Team is pretty cool, somewhat laid back environment. Vacation/Holidays are pretty good (everyone gets a free week off the week of New Years or Christmas). The team you'd be joining (myself and one other person) are pretty cool guys as well. While the department is responsible for "internal IT", honestly most users are pretty technologically sound and this really wouldn't be your job anyway. Pretty good mix of technologies. We have System Center deployed and handling most of deployments/updates with little to no input from you, the Senior, personally, and our environment is completely set up for Powershell remoting so if you need to edit the hosts file of 3 departments at the same time you can do that with almost no headache. I'm also under the understanding that the insurance is "spectacular", but I did hear this from our insurance rep so take it with a grain of salt. You'd have a pretty good laptop (almost all of our corporate machines run on 256GB SSDs, 16GB RAM, etc), and 2x monitors is standard if you care about that sort of thing. I'll be personally trying to ensure that the new Senior inherits the previous Senior's monitors which are ridiculous dual 26" monitors or whatever.

The bad:
Not a lot of documentation on the App. There's definitely that "wall" that the programmers chuck a new version over and then it becomes our problem. Lead Software Engineer at one point essentially plugged a router into his machine and then called desktop support wondering why he couldn't get to internal sites. Frequent and completely sincere/unapologetic "Works on my box" from programmers. Legacy technology in use everywhere that makes no sense and refuses to cooperate with things like UNC paths, has hardcoded character limits for certain parameters, etc. I understand some people have issues with the higher-ups being very, very resistant to change. Database structure makes almost no sense and the DBA team is full of people who have only ever worked here and have no sane frame of reference. Weekly deployments at 11pm, but these usually run pretty smoothly and we split them up based on who is on-call. No configuration management tools (puppet, chef, etc), so we manage about 100ish production servers with various scripts that sometimes make no sense.

Contact: You can reply to the Indeed posting Here, or you can e-mail your resume to me at stmarier at gmail, if I think you're a good fit I'll forward your information to my supervisor who is the one you would be replacing. I'm not HR or a hiring manager (actually, I'm the junior you'd be responsible for), but I can get your resume to the right people. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions at the previously listed address, and the position is most likely (90%+ sure on this) not open to remote.

edit: I should note, we may have another opening for a more junior or mid level candidate shortly. Our deparment has gone from 5 people to 2 people over the course of the last 4 months - obviously they want to get that Senior spot filled first but I imagine they will wanting to fill those other slots at some point. If you're interested in a Jr or Mid level position feel free to e-mail me, maybe we can work something out. There's no official posting for it yet, however.

I recently graduated from a bootcamp and label myself as a Junior Web Developer. Not sure how much the label really helps, honestly.
At the bootcamp we concentrated on ruby, rails, javascript, html/css and other miscellaneous relevant topics.

What I'm looking for: My main concern is finding a position that is friendly to a junior developers needs to learn and grow further.
I'm not worried about what language or framework a company is using, since at my level I am not an expert at
any particular language or framework and I feel comfortable learning a new one.

Where I live: San Francisco

Where I'm looking: I prefer to find work in San Francisco, but I dont have much of a problem moving, even out of the country. There isnt a whole
lot keeping me here.

When I can start: pretty much as soon as possible. I'm working as a temp at a company but I am not obligated to stay since I'm working self contracted.

Requirements: Full time, or paid internship

I can be PM'ed here. Otherwise my e-mail address is: agate987@yahoo.com Any advice is much welcomed.

Sending you a PM

Take care with that! We have not fully ascertained its function, and the ticking is accelerating.

My experience: MSc in CS, recent graduate. 2.5y of research work in computational biology in C/C++ with OpenMP and CUDA, resulting in 3 publications. Experience with C#, Python, some Java and SQL, Win/Unix environments, and the usual trappings of software development. I can pick up anything given a few weeks.

What I'm looking for: Software Engineering/development. Ideally in HPC type work, but I'm flexible.

What I'm not looking for: Jobs in Texas, temp jobs

Where I live: Outside the Chicago area

Where I'm looking: One of the coasts - Boston, Seattle, California, I'd prefer to relocate, but I'm pretty flexible at this point.

When I can start: ASAP, potentially a couple weeks if I need to relocate

Requirements: Full time

That's oddly specific and actually cuts out a not-insignificant portion of jobs if you're truly looking everywhere else.

So I posted jobs openings at Blizzard Entertainment on the last page back in July and don't want to spam up this thread too much, but a goon was successfully hired so figured I might as well post some of the other openings. These are all in Irvine, CA:

Lead Linux Systems Administrator
Senior Producer, Battle.net
Project Manager, Network Operations
Windows System Engineer
Senior Web Front End Engineer
Business Intelligence Analyst
Senior Test Engineer
Network Operations Project Analyst

There are more positions that you can check out on the new jobs page, including some in Austin, TX and SF. You can apply using those links for an internal referral or message me with any questions (or to get referred you see that might be a good fit but isn't listed above).

Cry 'Havoc!', and let slip the cows of war.

I'd be interested in that test automation position, except that I escaped Irvine last year and never want to move back.

I'm the IT manager at Merit Network, and I have 3 spots open on my team. Merit Network, located in Ann Arbor MI, is a cross between an ISP and an MSP, where we provide connectivity (different team) and IT services (email, virtual datacenters, storage, IDPs, radb, etc). These jobs all have some common components:

- There's an on-call rotation. You're on-call for one week (and paid for it), then you're an escalation the next week, then you're off for a while. "While" depends on how many folks are in the team - right now we have 6 people in the rotation, this will put us at 9. (I'm in the rotation as well)
- Linux. Even the windows spot benefits some familiarity with linux, or at least enough critical thinking to know how to troubleshoot basic things in linux while on call.
- They're all on-prem. We're not looking for remote hands at this point.
- Benefits. http://umjobs.org/university_benefits/ (We get U of M benefits)
- They're all 8-5, with the occasional after hours maintenance. These are usually scheduled well in advance.
- Training budget. We have one! While there are policies that apply to new employees & training, in general we've been able to send folks to 1-2 training session a year.

Spot one:

http://umjobs.org/job_detail/101023/storage_engineer

We're looking for someone to handle bare metal through the hypervisor in our datacenters. We currently have 1 primary and 2 secondary locations, all within an hour's drive of the office (depending on traffic).

Note: The position is titled "Storage Engineer" for HR purposes. Please read the description and requirements - you'll see that the working title, Data Center Engineer, is more accurate.

Spot two:

http://umjobs.org/job_detail/101027/infrastructure_engineer

We're looking for someone at an intermediate level with a Windows & VMware skillset to join our IT team. Your normal tasks include managing our vCenter & vCloud environments, troubleshooting them, managing our Windows server environment, helping manage applications in that environment, automating it, and in general making things better. If you know or are comfortable w/ a linux shell, that's even better, as there's an on-call portion that requires said comfort.

Spot three:

http://umjobs.org/job_detail/101084/senior_application_administrator

We're looking for a senior email admin with a strong linux background. We sell email as a service, and we need someone that has an excellent understanding of email flow, has worked with an enterprise grade messaging system, and can handle themselves in linux. Our email service is based on Zimbra and runs of a mix of CentOS 5 & Ubuntu 12.04 (we're migrating to Ubuntu 12.04).

I think the job requirements and the description should paint a decent picture of what we're looking for, but if you have any questions, please feel free to ask at cbaldwin@merit.edu .
