Well, Tokyo Game Show starts in a few weeks and Japan is 3DS home turf. We'll probably hear about some New 3DS exclusives then.

Did the DSi actually do that, though? DSiWare aside, very few games even made use of DSi-enhanced features, let alone relied on them.

Game Boy Color is a better point of comparison.

Since the new 3DS has a faster CPU do you think that will mean old games that chugged on the framerate will run better?

No. Upcoming games may get better performance, but old games weren't programmed to take advantage of the extra power and will run the same as always. In theory, they could be patched to use the faster CPU, but it's still on a game-by-game basis and I don't think most developers are going to find giving some years-old title a few extra fps for a subset of users worth the investment.

Venusy posted:

I think this is just "not fully compatible" for the same reason the 3DS itself isn't with these titles - the lack of GBA slot. Pokémon D/P/Pt/HG/SS should play fine, but you won't be able to do any of the transferring from the Pokémon GBA games. Similarly, I think the Phoenix Wright JP releases had extra features if you had the GBA versions.

Correct, most of the games on that page just have GBA slot functionality that's disabled on newer devices, they'll work fine otherwise on the New 3DS. However, there ARE 3 titles that won't work at all on the New 3DS, since they have weird non-standard game cards that won't work with the new game card slot on the front of the system. I don't think any of them were ever released outside of Japan, though.

Looks like I'm going back to the standard size 3DS then when this new one hits. That's fine, the XL is nice to have with the larger screens, but it doesn't pocket as easily as the 3DS.

If you're feeling somehow slighted about them releasing a new revision then you're loving dumb and should get your head out of your rear end. The first half of the direct was talking about upcoming Old 3DS games, its not like your current console is suddenly obsolete or something and the exclusives probably will not amount to that much unless it sells a ton. Now, if you just bought a XL recently I'm truly sorry, RIP.

It's an effective albeit roundabout way of implementing child filtering on a device that's largely marketed at children. The PR nightmare that they have to deal with every time a "my kid can go to playboy.com on his new NINTENDO SYSTEM!" is enough to make them at least attempt to be proactive about this sort of thing.

I mean, sure it's dumb from a normal person's perspective, but it's .1% of the purchase price of the device, likely the smallest CC transaction they could offer. Hyperbolic freaking out with "LOST THEIR loving MINDS!" seems a bit misguided.

I was worried about the "no transferring games/save data to a PC for storage" part, and checking the original Japanese website I'm not sure that's the case. The question is more like "Can I transfer just individual games and save data from the SD card?" As in, it's asking if you can transfer things piecemeal and the answer suggests you have to do the whole thing. I don't think it's saying you can't back up your microSD card to a PC. (Which doesn't really make sense anyway, how would they prevent it in the first place?)

New3DS won't be out for like 6 months at least, Smash Bros comes out in a month.

They really put their users in a tight spot with this one, although I guess most everyone already has a 3DS and those that were going to buy one SOLELY to play Smash Bros are still going to do that, regardless of what's on the horizon.

It's not gonna be confusing for us because we all read the press release and saw the explanations from multiple other sources. But we live in a reality where the Wii U, where personally to me is pretty self explanatory, still got passed off as a addon for the Wii. New 3DS is going to be super confusing for most people especially when its new features aren't that obvious if you're just looking at it side by side with the current models.

A question though, if they're marketing to children why are they using hinges again? I mean the entire point of the 2DS was to make it a single solid object. Why would they make the New 3DS in the same style as the previous incarnations which all had broken hinges?

I don't think it's really that they're marketing to children as much as they're trying to be more child-friendly, while still providing what older people want. I don't want that giant 2DS. I want something that folds up to protect the screens, because I care about the scratches that might be on it, and it possibly getting bashed around in my backpack.
