I think Microsoft has tried to move the entire range downmarket. Partially because 4 is seen as a cursed number in china (it sounds like the word death) so they didn't want to make a Lumia 430. The 530 is essentially what a 430 would be and the 630 has moved down to the 520 range.

Granted, I still don't think this excuses the lack of an ambient light sensor or proximity sensor. I can't imaging they are saving that much per unit by shaving these off.

Thanks!

It depends on context - often when you're making a post, you've read to the end of the thread anyhow, but sometimes you want to quote someone, but then continue reading. On a web browser you can open the quote on a new tab, so it isn't an issue but in an app you then need to go back to the post you were quoting to keep reading.

Such a bad idea. I think everyone understood the 620/520 and now the 630 is missing features from the 620 wtf MS?

Got them both for $50. Just kinda figured the 630 would be a step up from the 620.

I really like the 635, but yeah, an ambient light sensor and an LED on the back are things I would've been willing to pay :10bux: more for.

I'm not entirely sure where the battery life complaints I've seen in reviews came from, it has been light years better than my poor Lumia 920, even in big convention centers where things usually suck.

On my 630, whenever I try to access the internet, on EVERY PAGE it will load to about 95% (with a blank screen sitting there) and then sit for about 20 seconds, the load fine. No matter how strong my connection. I've tried on Wifi AND Cellular Data.

Also whenever I come out of lock screen, it sits there for 4 to 5 seconds on "resuming..." before showing my start screen. Pretty unacceptable. It does it after restart too with zero apps running. Might just have to return this sucker.

This occurred after installing Live Lock Screen Beta then uninstalling. On the off chance you did, change the lock screen pic to Bing then change to anything else, and that will solve.

I had the same problem and found a solution that suggests turning on the kid's corner thing. As part of its setup, it says you must disable the lock livescreen, and asks if you want to do it. Press yes, then just abort the rest of the setup, and it's fixed.

At first I thought it was caused by the new music app since I'd uninstalled Live Lock Screen Beta and because the music app is really messy right now. Quite often the song it's currently displaying isn't even the one that's being played.

Question for all you Lumia owners. With WP8, did they fix the boot loop issue that existed WP6.5? It would occur when you ran the phone flat and started to charge it, as 6.5 would try to boot up as soon as it had "enough" charge, which usually caused the phone to go flat again. That was the only issue I had with my 900, but also the reason I switched to a S3.

I am however willing to give WP8.1 a try as I've been lusting after the 1020 for a while. Not having to carry a point-and-shot camera with me ever again is a very big attraction.

There was no WP6.5. The condition you describe can be caused by using a charger with too low draw compared to what you were trying to do on the phone. Frequently this would mean trying to charge over a standard usb port on say a computer instead of directly from the wall.

Yeah he meant 7.5.

As for my internet connection woes, I've discovered they actually go away when I switch to cellular data for the most part. I think I may have mentioned to the contrary earlier.

So it seems there is something on my wireless router that is really stalling/throttling mobile connections. It just seems to have started in the past two weeks.

I'm not entirely sure where the battery life complaints I've seen in reviews came from, it has been light years better than my poor Lumia 920, even in big convention centers where things usually suck.

My value carrier started offering the 635, and due to the cost for me basically amounting to paying off the last $50 from my 520's tab-plan, plus living with a heavily cracked screen for the better part of 3 months I decided I'll give WP yet another shot (well as long as I barely have to outlay over $100, it was $150 outright on this carrier).

Anyways, for those coming from a 520 (warning: bunch o words)

Gotta say with keeping budget expectations in mind, I'm actually quite happy with it, more so than I thought I would. Yeah, the lack of an ambient light sensor is a weird cost cutting measure and I bitched about that bizarre decision, but in real-world use it's a minor inconvenience IME. To start, the screen is significantly better than the 520's, in black levels and massively better sunlight readability. With sunglasses on and in direct sunlight, at the high brightness setting it's completely readable - the 520's screen was invisible by comparison. In general outdoors it's more readable at medium brightness than the 520's at high, and I pretty much leave it at medium 80% of the time so I'm not changing it that much. If I do, it's because I'm about to do more on the phone than just switch tracks or check email, so the extra 2 seconds to swipe down and tap the brightness setting a couple of times isn't much of a bother. It helps that the 520's automatic setting set the brightness way, way too low in lower ambient light situations and at least in mine was super-sensitive, so just changing the angle of the phone in a darkened room would cause it to constantly adjust, so I was often manually changing the brightness regardless. Colours are well saturated, and the lower resolution (at least outside of the web where it can be noticeable in font rendering) doesn't seem to stand out as being a limiting factor in terms of clarity for the screen size.

I don't know if it was something with my 520, but one area that's also significantly improved is the time for GPS to poinpoint my location - my 520 could take 10+ secs often. Here, it's basically instant - 1-2 secs. Getting directions now is almost an order of magnitude speedup.

Performance-wise, you do definitely notice the CPU upgrade. There's still a number of times you're looking at "Resuming..." for a couple of secs when switching amongst a variety of apps so yeah, 1 GB would have helped. But overall, when I'm going back and forth to a $600 device like the iPhone5S or MotoX that I use here for testing, it's not the sea-change in terms of performance delta that would be noticed in certain areas as with the 520. Apps load quickly, animation is flawless, phone is responsive - you just don't get that there's a massive difference in performance, at least what you would expect for a device that costs ~$500 more.

One area where the CPU really seemed to help is with Xbox Music. You still shouldn't need a loving quad-core CPU to display 4 albums from an artist in under 4 secs, but I had the latest version with the most recent dev preview on my 520 as well, and it's definitely far better with the 635. Barely any delay at all now performing most tasks. Oddly enough the longest wait is resuming the app, which I noticed was getting lengthier in the past few updates on the 520 as well, when they had it down quickly a few updates prior. Surprisingly as well have not that that static burst of the previous track once (using the same SD card that was in my 520) - other still have going by the uservoice threads though, so maybe it's a combination firmware/OS issue or I've just been lucky.

Camera is definitely improved, albeit still firmly in the "serviceable" category of course. Decent amount of contrast boost applied to low-light photos so the lack of flash doesn't render it completely useless in poor lighting conditions as it did with the 520. Again don't expect much here, but I do notice a decent improvement.

Battery life is pretty solid in my short testing. Over the past 2 days it was completely off for roughly 3 1/2 hours as I saw two flicks, but after 2+ solid days since charging I was sitting at 27% battery this morning. Only feature disabled was Wifi Sense, otherwise all features enabled at all times - location, wifi, pedometer (which is nice with the Bing Health & Fitness app). Not heavy use mind you by any means, about 1 & 1/2 hours of internet sharing with my iPad, ~4 hours of music playing, browsing the news app at transit stops, just a few voicemails/SMS's checked but no talk - but my 520 by comparison would have been dead a day earlier easily.

Only 2 downsides:

1) No super-sensitive screen like on the 520. I walk everywhere and still do in bitterly cold weather, so I took advantage of this with the 520 often using gloves, so this will be annoying as the weather gets colder. I normally just used this to skip music tracks the majority of the time, so the obvious "solution" would be to just have headphones with track/volume control. The reason I don't use those is because...

2) No equalizer control, still. FFS, why Nokia/MS consider basic tonal control an "upsell" is beyond me. I have a pair of cheap Sony earbuds that hit the mix with treble/bass just right so it doesn't really affect music quality with those, but every earbud/mic combo sounds like a tin can when I can easily compensate on other phones - as you could with any $30 MP3 player from years past. Completely artificial limitation, just dumb.

Aside from that, pretty much solves the majority of annoyances I had with the 520. Barring the app selection meets your needs, it actually gives me a better first impression relative to the price than the 520 did, at least at launch prices.

That's actually a really helpful write-up; my mom wants to unlock her 520 and give it to relatives and her main complaint about the 520 is how its screen collects dust and it sounds like the 63x has some major improvements in that area. Or maybe I'll just get her the 730 so she can skype.

Yeah, it's a JavaScript error it's throwing on. But I'm not sure what yet, since every time it has happened it's when I'm not debugging. I'll try that later and see if that's it.

keypass is a Windows Phone 7 or 8 program, and as far as I know there are copy and paste bugs when pasting from WP7/8 to 8.1. It will put in garbage characters. Try typing the password in directly.

I might be remembering this wrong but didn't the previous build automatically update the bookmark threads whenever you would go back to them? It's not doing that now and I could swear it used to do that.

I dig the dark theme but when it's loading a thread there's a white (or at least light colored) screen that comes up before the thread loads, at which point it turns into the dark theme look.

If it helps to know the hardware, I'm on a Lumia 1520 with the most recent dev preview update, though I haven't installed the Cyan update from AT&T yet since I've been away from decent WiFi for the past week.

But seriously, thank you for putting the time into developing this app, especially now that the other Awful reader app doesn't seem to work at all.

Yeah, really appreciate the app. In terms of formatting, it's more readable than the one for iPhone.

But I just want to make sure I'm not missing page selection and/or last page jump. Those are features that aren't implemented yet, right?

Also, can anyone else with a 635 confirm that the unquoted text in the body of a forums post is super-small in WP IE? Again, just want to make sure there isn't something I've overlooked.

And to add my two cents on the 635, I feel like I got a pretty drat good phone for the price. It feels very slow compared to my iPhone 5C, but all the features I have to have are there. In fact, I'm glad I picked up the 635 instead of a Moto G, because now that I've experienced the Snapdragon 400, I don't think I would have liked to have paid $80 more for a phone with roughly the same performance, even if it did have a higher resolution screen and other accoutrements. And even though the animations can get a bit choppy and applications that lose focus for a while often get reset, the overall design philosophy of the GUI is pleasant, and the OS is easy to use. Cortana works great, too. I can't call it up without going to the app (afaik), but it doesn't like to cut me off like Siri does so often. I was driving along today listening to a podcast, when I got a text message; Cortana read it out loud to me and let me dictate a response completely hands-free. That's a great feature.

Personally I think whenever you navigate to the bookmarks screen, whether it be backing out of a thread you're currently reading, or starting the app up, it should do an auto refresh but you could always make it an option in the settings page if it turned out to be controversial.

Hey WP users, I've been an android user for the last four years and, while I plan on keep mainly using android, I'll be switching carriers soonish and I don't plan on upgrading my phone (currently a Galaxy S4 with a custom rom). I'm here because my carrier will offer me a few free phones (or extremely cheap) and the Lumia 925 (for 1 extra euro/month for 24, making it an hilarious 24€ total) is one of the options. I've googled information about it and seems like a decent device and I want to mess with WP 8.1.

Will I be able to remove carrier apps and other bloatware? Will the 925 give me a good impression about how windows phones are?
