I'll throw my stupid opinion in so you guys can ridicule it mercilessly [for more than likely being unintentionally dumb] as well. Rape isn't gonna just up and disappear forever in like a week, so I think that giving women a way to protect themselves if they're suspicious about their drinks is a pretty good thing. I don't really know what this will do to the meta [probably the wrong word to use but I'm not up to date on this stuff anyway] of rape prevention discussions looking for new ways to absolve all men of blame like wage gaps but I think this is a good thing from my pool of ignorance. I'm sure someone else will better explain the pros and cons though.

Not gonna lie, nail polish that changes color to reflect the wearer's BAC would be pretty awesome for everybody and for more than just preventing date rape. Slap some on a finger before you go out and know when you need to call it a night. Or if you don't, have a nice colorful sign to everybody else that you shouldn't be allowed to drive.

imgur seriously is the most racist and sexist community outside of reddit. Make a post arguing that Anita Sarkeesian deserves the harassment and daily rape/death threats because of her opinions? Roofie-detecting nail polish is cool and will make a lot of women safer and its very existence will dissuade a lot of men from attempting date rape in the first place. "Well we shouldn't need this at all though" you can say the same thing about the loving fire department you useless utopian loons (edit: this post sucks, i suck) The Time Dissolver has a new favorite as of 14:53 on Aug 30, 2014 |

I still think it's a cool idea, in general, don't get me wrong, I'm just concerned that it's 'diverting' a bit from the more important concern (teaching people not to rape, rather than having people live in fear). VV: gently caress, I meant distracting. I didn't imply it was a choice between the two, sorry if that came through. Serperoth has a new favorite as of 13:59 on Aug 30, 2014 |

Use of roofies for rape is actually fairly rare, drink spiking is common but the vast majority of the time it is done using additional alcohol to make the victim much drunker than they expect, not with exotic drugs. If anything, things like this (rohypnol testing kits and so on) create a false sense of security by giving false negatives for spiked drinks since they completely fail to detect the most common form of drink spiking used to facilitate rape and sexual assault.

The problem with the nail polish is that it doesn't work. A person dipping their finger into a drink at a bar is hardly a sterile testing environment. Even if that wasn't a problem, there is such a wide variety of drugs that can be used to incapacitate someone that the polish can either detect only a few or will be so reactive that any result at all would be almost certainly a false positive. It's also made to deal with what is basically a side show aspect, that of the predatory stranger slipping something into your drink, rather than the far more common scenario of a friend or acquaintance just pushing more alcohol on you and taking advantage of that. A couple things that it does do, however, is provide someone with a false sense of security and add another item to the list of "well if she didn't want to get raped she should have done X." E: son of a bitch

The nail polish is probably a dumb idea, but it's even more dumb to get all upset over it. It's like getting upset at mace because women shouldn't have to carry mace around to be safe, and maybe sometimes mace wont be enough so it creates a "false sense of security".

It's like getting upset at mace because women shouldn't have to carry mace around to be safe, and maybe sometimes mace wont be enough so it creates a "false sense of security". The problem with any drink testing product is if it DOESN'T react, then whatever disclaimers they might print it is implicitly telling you this drink is OK and has not been tampered with. Unfortunately, the majority of drink spiking done for sexual-assault purposes is with additional alcohol, and the use of any drug that would actually be detected by the product is very rare. Even if you accept that women need to be careful and vigilant, which unfortunately does seem to be the case, it's likely people using the product would be at MORE risk, because they would be more inclined to drink something they had left unattended (but which tested "negative") than someone who wasn't using the product at all would be, even though if it had been spiked it would very likely test negative anyway. Basically it's like someone marketing and talking up a kit to test your well water for arsenic in an area where 99% of wells are arsenic free but many are contaminated with salmonella. It creates the perception that arsenic is a problem and draws attention away from the real issue.
