It really was pretty hilarious -- while people at PAX were going "Ha those neckbeards can't do poo poo", 4chan was quietly writing their bosses' bosses' boss, the advertisers, and all they had to do was link to the "gamers are dead" articles. it wouldn't have been so loving easy otherwise.
