Welcome to the 4th annual SUBTEXT GAME! The game where you write an essay about a random movie with a random subtext. The rules are simple. When you sign up you post in the thread with... 1. Your username (Just in case you change it etc) 2. A movie 3. A subtext And you are agreeing to write an essay when you sign up, so please keep that in mind. After everyone is signed up, by midnight on August 31st, I will randomize the movies and the subtexts and assign them out to the participants. The subtext and the movie are not linked to each other and will most likely not end up together. After everyone has their movie and their subtext they will have 2 weeks, ending on September 14th, to write their essay and email it to goonsubtextgame@gmail. Once we get it then the judges will grade the essays and the top three rated essays will get SUPER DELUXE PRIZES! You want some examples of essays from prior years? Sure! 2012 ESSAYS 2013 ESSAYS Here are the threads from the prior years... 2011 2012 2013 Fine Print... How long should these essays be? Try to make them less than 3 pages. If you really need more than write more, but realize that unless you are able to keep it really entertaining through and through that the judges might get bored on page 24. How are they going to be graded? Completely arbitrarily by the judges. I believe it is pretty much agreed on that we want to BELIEVE the essay. A good example is D2: The Mighty Ducks and Catharsis through Castration essay. Can I submit any movie? Please make it a movie that does not require weeks to find. If you are assigned a movie that you honestly cannot find I will assign you a movie from one of the prior years that was not written on. Can I submit any subtext? Try not to be too extremely specific or convoluted. Like, we are looking more for "penis envy" or "war on terror" as opposed to "Carl Jung's idea of the anima and animus in exploring the reunification of post World War 2 Europe". This is supposed to be a fun essay challenge and not some 4000 level college essay. What are the prizes? Umm, those will be determined at a future date. Should have email the essay in any particular way? Please have "Username/Movie/Subtext" in the title of the email and please submit it in a normal format such as doc, rtf, pdf, etc. If you have any questions then feel free to ask. Edit: Here is the current signup list. ASSIGNMENTS FOR THE 2014 SUBTEXT GAME code:
1st place will receive a Godzilla(1998) trailer reel as PART of their prize. Fat Lou fucked around with this message at 06:40 on Sep 15, 2014 |

Protagonist/antagonist, the two protagonists, protagonist and his sandwich, whatevs. It's sort of an in-joke I have with some friends, several of Michael Mann's films explore this theme in often quite on-the-nose ways and we've started jokingly pretending it's a theme in every movie. I think that's a good thing to use in this thread.
