This question may go past the usual reach of this thread, but I know a lot of you are NY garage adherents so I figure this is the best place to ask.

Did "tribal house" ever constitute a discrete compositional approach to house music / NY garage / nuyorican flavored house, beyond the "tribal" ornamentation of MAW, early 90s Armand Van Helden and their contemporaries? In other words, did it ever extend beyond nebulously fitting the bill of "tribal" sounding stuff from that period and constitute a real scene such as e.g. UK hardcore?

See this is a bit of a weird one for me. I want to say no, not really, not in the sense of what Jungle or Dubstep was like. But then again we are talking 15-20+ years ago and my memory ain't that good. Plus it was never my thing.

Don't get me wrong I remember that sound being really popular. Tribal House would have it's own wee bins in the record store (though I remember it being the usual stuff you'd find like Tribal Records, Strictly Rhythm bits and bobs and what have you), you'd get all the big name NY DJs coming over for big dances etc. But I always remember lumping it in with the likes of Progressive House. This weird uncool giant monolith thing that just appeared out of Pete Tong's, Ministry of Sounds or Mixmags arse. It never seemed a scene, just a sound. Just a very popular one.

I'm very biased about then though so best not take my word as anywhere near gospel, I'm sure someone will come along and correct me.

Anyway it's been a good week or two in terms of releases. Obviously you had King Britt's Fhloston Paradigm LP on Hyperdub, but you also had R&S Records come out with a pair of stonkers. A few weeks old now but I only just got around to getting it the other week is Shanghai Den's The Sun, a druggy shuffling far out number. The other great R&S release has been Tessela's Rough 2, a superheavy dubby nightmare beat that'll either scare folk off or leave them flattened like a pancake to the floor, while the flipside kinda reminds me of some really hosed up 80s Electro thing.

For the Grime heads dpn't forget to pick up Novelist's Sniper which is out now on 12" on Oil Gang.

That Novelist EP is nice, although I would've liked for him spit some bars on it.

Plastician remastered and released a bunch of his classic dubstep/grime tunes, so I am very thankful for that. Also, here's a real old grime tune https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHUEP7jQPN8

Not too bad a selection from him. Can't remember the last time I heard that Supercat tune.

To keep you all skanking, the next Bucky Skank release is due in a few months, JD Twitch put up a preview the other week and it is killer if you ask me. Hardcore electro dub soul.
https://soundcloud.com/twitch/jd-twitch-d-jah-clark-soul-on

It's also been a bit of a bad week in terms of distributers closing too. With the main player here ST Holdings shutting doors at the end of the month apparently, though they don't seem to have made an official announcement that I can see, but who knows. I figured after they announced the label cut backs this would happen, but I figured it'd be further down the line. At least they seem kind enough to pay out before going under unlike many others.

Actually is that the last of the big UK based D&B originally distros gone now then? I know Nu-Urban sank a few years ago, and now this. Trying to make a list of the distros that have went under in the UK over the past ten years or so. Goya, Ideal, Intergroove, Baked Goods, ZAudio, Mo's/AlphaMagic, CB, Amato, Prime, Vinyl, christ the new millenium hasn't been kind has it.. e: Pinnacle, not Essential.

I think it's just a them thing. Unless it's like a southside thing or something, maybe a graff thing like they do over there. Not too sure where Inkke's from though. But wouldn't be surprised, always said you could tell the likes of HudMo and Rustie were southsiders as they came at things from a hip-hop angle which wouldn't fly out in the proper part of town - the east end.

So picked up the new FaltyDL album and I have to say it's pretty drat good. A fantastic variety bag of goodies, ranging from weirdy percussive numbers to flowing nu-jazzy tracks to bi-polar junglistic spacey warpers. Absolutely amazing. New Haven, Heart & Soul along with Danger being my prime cuts off it, the latter having come out on 10" not too long ago.

The spot varnish on the LP looks pretty nice too.

Another great thing to come out recently is Presk's new EP on the extremely promising label Something Happening Somewhere. Lead track Babou is a great little techy house number (or housey tech number maybe?) that reminds me of something Laurent Garnier wuld cut. Just enough to funk and flair in there to round off any sharp edges, but still strong enough for the boys. The flipside Gomero ticks most of those same boxes, though calms it down just a tad, wacking in some pads that really put me in mind of some old Alex Moran tracks (thumbs up if you remember Earth Woman Are Easy, one of my personal anthems).

28GBB, are there Scottish accents that you cannot understand? Eclair Fifi was doing the Lucky Me show on Rinse last week and in addition to not gating the music volume when she talked, she also had what I only assume is a northern Scottish accent and it made IDing any tracks I didn't already know impossible. One of the guys from Bicep has this problem too.

Also, the remixes of Joker's tunes is out now on Kapsize and is cool.

Not really, the only time you can struggle is when it's some kinda bizarro way up north highlands and islands things, but even then that's only like the 80 year olds who've never been touched the mainland since the war, even then though it's normally not too bad. She's just got a pretty light accent.

But yeah, was that the Aug 7th show? Any of her speech you're struggling with just let me know times and I'll translate or something. Actually things get harder cause she never ducks it down, that causes most of the problems. Think she forgets she's not on the BBC anymore. Swear though you'd think Rinse would've got one of those mixers with the auto-duck feature by now. It's not like they're gonna get it confiscated in a Ofcom raid anymore.

I don't know if this is the appropriate thread, or if there is a thread but check my friend Zeke's new music.

https://soundcloud.com/zekebeats/doge-free-download (ignore the name, hes a bit goofy)

He's got an EP coming out on Saturate Records soon and is a WA state DMC champ. His music sounds a bit like Eprom, as Eprom is who gave him advice on what synths to buy. UZ played this song on his show on Friday. I don't know if he'll go international touring after the EP, but if he does I suggest catching him live. He plays on control vinyl and a maschine, which he uses to mix a lot of effects with scratches. It makes for a really energetic live show.

The new Rustie album came out this week. Its certainly no Glass Swords, but I've really been enjoying it. It does seem like a bunch of randomly assorted tracks rather than an album at some points. I mean I really like Attak as a song, but I think it would have been a better suited song to put out as a stand alone single.

I was really into Butterz a couple years ago (and I still listen to their show somewhat regularly), but I definitely am feeling Gobstopper, Glacial Sound, Boxed (if we want to call that a label), Oil Gang, and Local Action more these days. I know some folks are into this sound so what are some labels like Lion Charge Records? Stuff that is real dread without going into the Tempa type area of dubstep. So I guess closer to the ragga/dub scene.

Not a whole lot of labels push the ragga/dub steppa stuff exclusively. Moonshine/Lion Charge are the only in the last year or two that I know that release different artists on that tip. The others are just Artists who publish they're own stuff and occasionally a friends. Steppas Records puts stuff out like that as well but I don't really vibe with their stuff to hard. If I can think of any more that are still in pressing or releasing stuff I'll add it to the list.

On none dubstep ragga/dub stuff:
45seven has been pushing some really cool jungle/dub stuff for awhile so if you're not just going for dubstep check them out as well as ZamZam sounds because they're really pushing some good tunes.
