Look, something should be done. This third party security poo poo has been wrecking people's lives for years now. Companies like Apple, Dropbox, Facebook, and the rest should all be held accountable and responsible for the security they claim to provide. In the meantime though, people should be safe. This has happened way too many times already. Until the above clean up their act people should err on the side of caution and avoid taking/uploading pics unless they really know that they're doing with the upload/privacy settings

I can't wait to read the LF guide to ideologically acceptable, non-patriarchal internet security. Should be a hoot. quote:When logging on to your cistem, refuse attempts to shame you into using two-factor authentication, which binds you to the patriarchy materially through necessitating the use of their consumer devices as a gateway to accessing YOUR INFORMATION THAT SHOULD BE FREE and ideologically by forcing you into a bigoted, patriarchal dichomotmous form of authentication that mirrors their beliefs on gender and power. I am under the impression these pictures weren't just floating around in the open, but 4chan got at them by brute-forcing the Find my iPhone tool, which sort of implies they, you know, had a password and everything. edit: can iCloud accounts even do two-factor auth?

Should be a hoot. a) the pictures weren't "free and unsecured data" they were literally the opposite of that. what you're saying here is the opposite of reality. any additional security put into place would be just that, additional to the security already in place b) the security already in place that was hacked. what's to say that any additional security will save them? the type of people that put effort into obtaining these pictures have gotten past larger hurdles than this in the past and won't go 'oh wow, an additional password, pack it in guys, it's over.' iirc, people have literally been burgled in an effort to obtain pictures like this. c) nobody here is saying that extra security is bad. it's always a good idea to be extra safe. however, the problem here is that the second something like this happens, a large and vocal group of idiots will come out and say 'well, this wouldn't have happened if you took proper precautions.' while they're wrong that this wouldn't have happened, they're technically right in advising more security - but the larger issue is that this is the first thing they come out with. they aren't berating the people who actually Did The Crime here, they're taking aim at the victims. and that wouldn't be such a problem if it wasn't the default response of society, if it wasn't done on a large scale. not only does it (partially) remove the blame from the hacker/attacker and place it with the victim, but it also sends a very clear message towards the victim. and that message of blame fits into a greater force that's all kinds of hosed up and harmful to these women, that pushes shame and guilt and makes them internalise the blame. that's utterly destructive to the psyche. this isn't the first time things like this have happened. just look at the phenomenon of "revenge porn." from that article: quote:At least two women have killed themselves over revenge porn, and Cyber Civil Rights Initiative studies show that 47 percent of victims contemplate suicide. there's no doubt that first figure is a lot higher. or let's look at some of the victims who shouldn't have taken pictures: quote:A Victim Named Tory or maybe the ones that should've secured their computer or whatever: quote:A Victim Named Cathy so in short, go gently caress yourself.

Ok, I'll do the unthinkable and come out and say I was wrong. I was not considering my suggestions for short-term self-preservation in the larger context of the victim-blaming conversation. I have trouble with that because I really can't wrap my head around that kind of thinking. It is very foreign to me. Also, I am an optimist and (naively) like to think people are generally good.

It's pretty hosed up that people got hacked but I'm more surprised this stuff hasn't leaked out through people being generally lovely as of yet. Like, I've been in social situations where a guy received a dirty picture from his long-time girlfriend and has immediately shown me and everyone else present without even thinking about it, even though I barely knew him as as an acquaintance. Not only has this happened more than once, but each time the sole justification was Guys Are Hanging Out And That's Just What Guys Do. Basically men are garbage and that's a far better reason not to send one a pic of your breasts than poor iPhone security or whatever.
