Definitely more of an Alex Verus thing. There's an entire character dedicated to making custom clothing in that series.

Not a whole lot of new info from the Dragon Con panel. Two interesting things: "Space stuff" is coming later. We'll see more of the Greek pantheon, and Hades is the most reasonable of that bunch.

I've read through Blood Engines, and Poison Sleep. They are not too bad. No long drawn out sex scenes anyway. The world they live in feels very bland and the magic community does not feel 'real' in the book. Decent enough, a few weird lines. Good to pass the time while waiting for other urban fantasy.

Just buzzed through the latest Rivers of London book. I enjoyed it, but other than the twist at the end was pretty underwhelmed.

I bought it for 3$ because I read too fast anyways and had already read two of the bonus books so didn't mind missing out on them. Trip report: The Heretic: Gun Description Porn. Dubious Catholic Mysticism. Interesting and unexplained Cabalist Ritual Magic. A few action sequences, and lots of Problem Solving By Sniper Rifle. Crimson Night: Our Heroine is Actually a Demon, guess her Sin. Lust. Sigh. More Abrahamic Mythology, Nephilim and Seraphim and Demons. Choppy vocabulary makes the heroine feel young in ways that exposition contradicts. Interesting twists, conceits, less interesting execution. I haven't gotten into the rest of it yet.

According to Jim, he has six chapters left to write on the first Cinder Spires book. Once he finishes it and turns the manuscript over to his editor, the publisher will likely announce a release date. So expect to hear news on that front towards the end of next month.

Alex Verus, Hidden spoilers: A lot of it is set in what is basically the castle from ICO, windmill and all. and now I've finished the entire Dresden series, including Skin game again, and the entire Verus series including Hidden again. It wasn't enough. Need more non-poo poo urban fantasy (I've read several of the other series listed in the OP, and turned my nose up at the rest). gently caress. Maybe I'll go through the Matthew Swift or Felix Castor series again but... and I'd rather read something new. Carth Dookie fucked around with this message at 13:00 on Sep 2, 2014 |

So I knew it was coming thanks to these threads, but I just finished Iron Druid #3 and....woo boy, its like the author suddenly decided he wanted his target audience to be 13 year old boys. Also Sandman Slim is so absurdly over the top that I can't help but love it.

I'm listening through the audiobook of the first Alex Verus book and so far I'm not a fan of how he's writing women. Luna alternates rapidly between bland, useless, and emotional wreck without any other character traits that I've been able to pick up. Not to mention he calls the feminine air elemental dumb, whereas when describing the masculine lighting elemental the phrasing is "elementals aren't dumb, just limited". I still prefer it to the bullshit in the Mercy books but it's still bothering me. Does that get any better as the series progresses?

I bought the first Alex Verus book recently. For some reason the whole "dark mages" thing really put me off - like, once you use that kind of terms there's no ambiguity at all! Add some really plain characters to the mix and boom, what a disappointment. That said, I found the way Verus' powers were used was really interesting, so I'm not sure if I should get the next book in the series or not. In any case, I just bought the sequel to London Falling today so I guess I'll focus on that once I have some spare time to read, although I thought the first book kinda tied the whole thing together pretty well. Has anyone read the sequel? Is it any good, or did I just waste six euros today? I'm really looking forward to the next Rivers of London book, and I enjoyed the hell out of the last Laundry Files one. drat, that was a fun read, is the rest of Charles Stross' stuff as funny? I love the dark humour in those books. Any other books by him I should read? Or is there any similar weird fiction + black comedy books I should read? Lots of questions, I know

darth cookie posted:This gets fleshed out as a much more "collective of manipulative Sith Lords" as time goes by FWIW. well, that's nice to read. It felt really dumb when I first read it... basically for some reason on the first couple of times I felt like the writer was trying to set up this ambiguous world before getting to the real stuff - but, drat, that's a really dumb name. I think I read somewhere that he used to be a Young Adult writer, so maybe that explains it, but still... A couple of posts ago I read that Luna improves a little as the series goes on, so that's good. In a sense it felt like reading a Harry Potter-esque novel, and maybe I was expecting something a bit more mature? I'm not sure. I mean, I enjoy the hell out of the silly stuff on Dresden so I can't say I'm not juvenile at times, but still. The thing is, the seer's powers were very fun to read. They felt very different to other 'magic systems' - I just didn't like the rest of the stuff that much, haha. Maybe I'll give the sequels a chance at some point, then. We'll see!

Not my favourite series, but not a waste of money either. You should give Alex Verus another shot though, I quite liked those books (just finished the most recent one) despite the "dark/light mages" thing. Refreshing to have a protagonist who actually has to run away sometimes.
