The crash at 42 seconds or so looks exactly like damage a car would take in GTA. It's uncanny.

Misjudging breaking distances in the wet and smacking someones bumper is one thing, but some of those Russian dash cam videos, how do the people they crash into not get out of their car and beat the poo poo out of them? Sometimes the crashes look like they where TRYING to crash.

Doing 70 mph when the flow of traffic going with you is 25 mph, with multiple roads joining yours, while on ice, around a bend, in the dark, with your eyes closed, with no barrier between your 2 lanes and the other 2 oncoming lanes? Nar man it's all good!

I think someone explained it in a previous thread, but the general explanation for Russia being batshit insane is that personal car ownership is a relatively new concept, so that, in combination with less than stellar driver education and traffic law enforcement generally leads to all Russian roads at all times being a Mad-Maxish chaos arena. I've heard reports that Asian countries are similar, with China leading the pack.

That's kind of how I've always thought about it. You have a society that didn't grow up in a 'car culture'. They didn't spend their entire youths being ferried around in autos. Even just riding in back you learn a bit about driving etiquette, speed, braking distances, and such over the decade or so you're aware of it. It becomes ingrained in your brain.

Without that experience you don't understand that life isn't like video games and cars actually have mass and inertia.

Give video games some credit, Euro Truck Simulator 2 is a great teaching aid for new drivers on why you never, under any circumstances, cut off an 18-wheeler. Especially when they're barreling through your sleepy little town with a tanker full of gasoline at 90mph.

This BAC Mono driver loves dogging the P1 at every opportunity, but the latter simply takes off in the straights. He probably couldn't pass the Mclaren if it was being driven balls out (assuming the driver is even capable of that). I'm guessing any hypercar that shows up at a track session would get the same attention from drivers wanting to show up the unskilled rich guy or just to see what it can do.

Both cars had race drivers at the wheel... so it's not like the P1 was on a babbys-first-track-day parade lap.

Huh, that changes things. I read that the P1 wasn't taking the proper driving line for Silverstone, so I guess the racer was babying the car or is unfamiliar with the course. Somehow the latter doesn't seem plausible. The Mono is a helluva track toy either way.

Gummy Bear Heaven ... It's where I go when the world is too mean.
I remember a video from a while back where a manufacturer (I wanna say Honda) had a race between their minivan, car, sports car, and race car. They staggered the start, letting the race car go when the others where 80% around the track and still having it win.

Anyone know what I'm talking about? Do they have a link?

The safety crew response was impressive.

Very first signs of spin/smoke - 0:07, impact at 0:09, crashed car comes to a stop at 0:19, dudes piling out of safety truck at 0:25. Eighteen seconds from the earliest sign of a problem to the safety crew jumping out at the wreck.

I guess it's also possible that MH17 happened because some people didn't grow up in a "civilian airliner culture", but Occum's Razor tells me that in both cases, "vodka" is a more likely explanation. :v:

I went to watch a new episode of Cars of the People but found out that the whole thing is only 3 episodes so it's been over since last week. I'm really disappointed since I enjoyed this show so much more than Top Gear. I was really into the theme of common cars with history, rather than gushing about supercars all day. Hopefully they come to their senses and keep it going.

I think it was designed as a 3 part mini-series and I'd rather have that than a series that goes on forever after it has already said everything that needs to be said.
