The point was that I at one point felt a "jealousy of being Tank Man" from my personal position of being a privileged upper-middle-class white kid watching it happen, and feeling angry and unable to fight against an issue on that level, at an early an immature and naive time in my life. I feel empathy for these angry young kids shouting "'fire' in a crowded theater" because nobody else seems to be hearing them - from their own personal perspectives of privilege.

I apologize that it did not equate as effectively for you as I hoped to bring that image across however, that is what I personally believe all off the "MRA"s etc are working through right now - I just feel lovely for them that they might some day be looking at a job and have someone in an interview ask, '"xx420SNIPEZNIGZxx', are you familiar with that name? We googled your name and found that handle attached to you - who now want to get a job. (also all these Facebook pics of you smoking bongs when you were 16)."

As was quoted in "Catcher in the Rye" (highly apropos to this discussion imho,",

“The mark of an immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one,”

edit: Apologies I was attempting to drop the thread of conversation and had no interest in taking the conversation with al past PMs if necessary, until someone dropped a one-liner on me in a public sphere.

So how about that Diablo 3 expansion? It's an awful lot of fun.

Partially because if you wanted to discuss it anywhere on SA you would probably get laughed out of here, but this #GamerGate bullshit is going off again and they have actually forced some female writers to just bow out. So I expect at some point something is gonna reach a head and it's going to be unavoidable discussion every week on some podcast. Doubt people can just leave their heads in the sand for any longer if this keeps up.

I take it you're not familiar with Something Awful? There's an unironic thread going on in GBS right now, next to the one where they're passing around links to child pornography.

Well, I meant if you earnestly tried to post a thread about it in Games the imp zone people would come in and laugh you out in a split. And the GBS thread is unironic? I really haven't kept up with GBS since 2.0 in all honesty.

I definitely agree with this because in a sense I too was also that dorky/nerd kid that was bullied and made fun of for playing video games and not sports way back when (except I'm not a white Caucasian dude). People just really hold on to video games as if its their only thing that makes them unique. I remember getting mad when people that made fun of me would start playing games and stuff and it made me really jealous and angry back then.

I used to be like that with Hong Kong films, getting all uppity about the "posers" that showed up to the rare screenings of them back home, completely unaware that I was as much a poser as any of them. In that none of us were. I think a hefty part of all this can just be attributed to nerds generally being real late in figuring out who they are (because so many of us think we already have that poo poo figured out waaaaay before we actually have).

Yeah, definitely. I don't think everyone should go through ~boot camp~ like some crazy people have suggested to straighten them out, but certainly people online need to get some perspective.

A lot of places like Idle Thumbs have been commenting on how this is the most puerile nonsense especially when they look at their twitter feed, and they see people bickering about this, and then right above that there's discussions about the genocide and growing power of ISIS, and below it are comments about Ferguson and the militarization of police, and how loving trivial everything about this is. I have to agree, at this point everyone currently, actively involved on either side is just a huge idiot. The Gamergate people for having skewed perceptions, and the journalists/bloggers/people on twitter who just are huge suckers for lovely trolls with anime avatars.

We're so worried about #GamerGate that we forgot about #LucaGate. Something must be done about #LucaBlight, and Watch Out for Fireballs! isn't afraid to tackle that issue in our Suikoden II episode.

Matters have conspired to make us reveal a large number of our upcoming episodes, so I will present them in list form. Coming up next:

* Contra / Little Nemo
* Half-Life
* God Hand
* Resident Evil (Gamecube Remake)

... and after that, we're doing an adventure game that will be determined by a poll. You can find information about that poll on our Patreon page. The options are "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream", "Riven: The Sequel to Myst", "Sanitarium", and "Grim Fandango".

That's a lot of game names I just typed.

Not beating Luca Blight is probably my biggest gaming regret. I loving loved, LOVED Suikoden II, but I just couldn't beat that fucker. Faced with replaying such a big chunk of game, I quit and sold my copy. Granted, this was in like 2008, so I made a fortune off it. But I've always wished I stuck with it and beat him because up until that point, the game was one of the best RPGs I'd played.

Looking forward to hearing stories on the podcast from people who did better than me.

I played Half-Life when it came out, but never finished it. Last year I decided to fix that, and played through most of the game. Then I got to the end, decided gently caress THIS, and turned on invincibility for the last world.

Having these single player games compressed into six hours of goodness is a thing I don't mind at all. Both of the main HL games are entirely too long.

I'm super bummed neither of you explored the cooking minigame. Doing the chef minigame was something I always looked forward to whenever I returned to my castle after a story event. It starts off as a simple Iron Chef parody and eventually develops a melodramatic chef-mafia story and you learn about legendary recipes that chefs were murdered over. At the end of it, you even get ending credits.

On another note, if you're interested in learning about Suikoden III, I honestly think the best way to experience it is to read the manga. I know you guys are loathe to read manga, but it's honestly well written and it's sorta like what you were hoping Suikoden II would be in that you don't have to deal with random battles and other JRPG pitfalls. I think it could easily be on the manga exception list with Berserk and it has a lot less problematic elements than Berserk because it's a pretty faithful adaptation of the game.

I think one of the things that drew me into the series so much was the world building, especially of unexplored lands in the series. The area Suikoden II takes place in is mentioned in the first game. Suikoden II introduced tons of unique areas to the greater world map by barely mentioning them in Richmond investigations or in books. Harmonia, The Grasslands and Zexen are all mentioned before III. The idea of getting to see all of it, game by game, kept me going through the depressingly slow pacing of III and the abject suffering of IV. The series died after V when they gave up on the world building aspect and went the Final Fantasy route of just creating a whole new anime planet with each game and it was hard to care anymore.
