I have a massive Cold War gone hot itch that I need to scratch. Anyone have any recommendations? It seems like most of what's out there is stuff from the 70s and 80s.

I'd send them an email really, it's what I did to ask for a status update.

While we're at it, I had a couple rules questions from playing Cuba Libre solitaire. First, is it possible to skip a operation but take a special action? The Syndicate often ends up with not a lot to do- Terror would expose guerrillas and thus casinos, they're happy with the number of open casinos they have and where their troops are, and they don't have more troops to rally. Can they still use the Profit activity even if they didn't use an operation (assuming they can use special actions)? Secondly, if it's impossible to use a special action, does that necessarily prevent the next person from taking the event? Say, for example, the DR Rallies and bribes M26 to play the event as the second action, but if they don't have Control they can't take a special action with Rally. Normally, forgoing your special activity would prevent the event, but does that still apply if it's entirely unintentional? Third, how is the government supposed to protect ECs when it's trivial for M26 infiltration to turn the troops around?
You can do a special action without actually doing an operation, yes. The only issue is that some special actions require certain areas to be targeted by operations in order to work. Also remember that it is possible to do a special action AND THEN do the operation instead of doing the special action after the operation. This is useful if you need funds for an operation.

As for the second question (even if it is moot now), yes, it is possible to someone to play the event. It doesn't actually matter what actions you take or not: just where you place your action marker.

ECs are really hard to defend as the government in Cuba Libre, but keep in mind that it costs the M26 the opportunity cost of playing a special action in order to infiltrate them. The government doesn't really spend that much on patrols since you can place guys on all of them as a special action. Special actions are difficult to get at the best of time so sending some guys to ECs means that you are forcing the M26 to waste them if they want to strike you there.

Government really should aim to win as quickly as possible in CL. Most of your money is gonna come from Aid and the more you wait, the more your alliance is gonna deteriorate.

Well, Twilight Struggle, obviously. I've heard good things about 1989: Dawn of Freedom, but never played it. Cold War is great fun, but it's from the '80's. Nuclear War is the best party game dealing with the theme. Get the expansions.

World At War: Eisenbach Gap(and the series) are probably some of the more straightforward cold war gone hot games.

This looks pretty good, though it's tactical and my gaming group has issues with games that require LOS determinations, sadly.

It's a PC game rather than a cardboard one, but seriously check out Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm.

I know someone suggested Next War: Korea as a modern combat game, that's set in the present rather than Cold War though. Depends on what exactly you want out of "cold war gone hot."

Yeah, I'm looking for something to scratch the same itch as ALB did. I loved the hell out of that game but Red Dragon just didn't do it for me.

Well GMT has a P500 up for MBT which is an update I'm guessing of the classic 80s game of cold war gone hot, action. Which I have a copy of and between the rules length and just how small the font is on the player aid guide and all the chits being in one big baggy I've resolved I will never play it. But have been considering dong the P500 for GMTs version and the two expansions they are offering

Similar to Eisenbach gap but at a higher level so no LOS calculations, I think.

Jumped on the Fire in the Lake P500 for a low price just before they shipped it. Ordered 4/8, shipped 27/8. We shall see how long it takes to surface in Australia. Guess I'm the bad guy, sorry everyone.

I have finally had a proper game of Guns of Gettysburg

Well, I say a proper game, we only had two hours, so didn't quite get to the end of day one, but a Confederate (me) flanking attack had just taken an objective and was threatening another, while the Union had just smashed my other flank.

We decided that it was another Chancellorsville. A battle that Lee won at heavy cost, adding to his mystique but not really doing anything to alter the course of the war. There were still three Corps of Union troops not on the field, so the battle for Washington was still on, while the Confederate I Corps was smashed after heavy fighting.

We can't wait to play again! This time we will both read the manual and have a better idea.

BTW, supplying a game with two manuals is something more wargames should do!

Glad you enjoyed it. I would review the rules because stuff like multi-hour turns and marching during them can be weird at first. What did you think of the double-blind reinforcement schedule?

Also really want to get a game of FiTL this evening, any takers?

Played a game of Andean Abyss as the government today, game ended on the 3rd propaganda when the AUC managed to final-card some bases down that probably either me or the cartel/farc should have taken down. Game clocked in at less than 3 hours and everyone had fun. I like AA but I can see why the latter games in the series have the innovations they do (especially Fire in the Lake).

Picked up Twilight Struggle recently and reading through the rules I'm not quite clear in my mind as to why I could conduct a coup vs realignment roll.

Realignment Rolls only reduce Influence, whereas Coup's can potentially reduce an opponent's influence whilst increasing your own.
So would a realignment roll be used to reduce an opponents influence to the point where a successful coup is more likely?

keep yr head up, problem girl
The main use of realignment is to affect Battlegrounds in Africa and the Americas when DEFCON is at 2. Remember, couping a battleground lowers DEFCON, and doing so at DEFCON 2 is suicide.

Realignments can also hit multiple targets in a single turn, if you need to weaken a wide power base rather than jumping a single key location.

Realignments are good for DEFCON 2 messing around and can also be more reliable against high-stability countries (a common example is USSR Decolonize into Angola, grab Botswana, realign US out of South Africa.)

Thank you both, this made it click in place.. was focussing on the two without considering DEFCON and battlegrounds. So it sounds like you want to Coup to keep up your required Military Operations, but in battleground 'hot spots' you need to be a bit more subtle.

USSR usually gets a AR1 coup since Defcon rises, the US has a couple methods to steal or prevent this like headlining Junta or Duck and Cover, plus some other cards like SALT and ABM allow for coups at low Defcon. Coups are useful for getting milops but also for cutting back expansion- a good example would be a USSR coup of Columbia to prevent the US from moving from Panama to Venezuela. Coups are also good for preventing realignments- if the USSR has Angola and Botswana, then coup Botswana and their realignment of South Africa is ruined.

So I'm looking at the COIN series, and it appears only Andean Abyss is the only one that's widely available for resale (not p500). Which of the COIN series is the "must get", if there is one? I assume all of them support solo play as well, but I don't know for sure.

Give me info about COIN!

That would be because I just got the last copy of Cuba Libre :smug:

I don't think Andean Abyss has rules for government AI, it assumes you'll play government in case of solo play. Tekopo posted about AA above (when I was asking the same question) but aside from that one being a little rough and CL being a little simpler there's no real "must get" as far as I can tell.

I think it really comes down to which conflict interests you the most. I would say that AA is the most unpolished but it isn't a bad game and is still very compelling. And yeah, no Government AI in AA because they hadn't figured out how to do it properly yet.

It looks like British and Ulstermen vs. two Irish factions during the independence war. The independence treaty is a track on the map (a prototype was posted on BGG but I can't find it now) so it appears to simulate the civil war as well. I have no clue what victory conditions would look like, though, and since it's at least a year from release it could all change.

I got to play A Distant Plain last week. Against any sense of courtesy, I ended up playing the Coalition again; meaning I got to have a annoyed Government player again :(

That being said, I really do love the dynamic between Government and Coalition in ADP with its semi-teamwork-but-not-really approach. I pity a newbie starting out as Government though, because that seems like the hardest faction in the game.

Warlords ended up winning on the second-to-last Propaganda. Seven hours playtime total :smith: I bet we could knock down that playtime to five reasonably.

Now to learn how to play FitL to get on this IRC madness.
