I like Freeman. Solid album. Black Bush is definitely my favorite track, and the most "Ween" by far compared to the rest of them. I hope he keeps putting 'em out :)

Black Bush is my favourite too. It feels like English and Western Stallion is almost trying too hard to be Ween-like, whereas Black Bush just, is.

I saw Freeman the other night, and they were amazing. I didn't even know what it was until a couple of hours before the gig, so I had no idea what to expect. They played a fair amount of the new album, plus some Ween stuff that was fairly in line with the album's sound, like "Exactly Where I'm At," "Transitions," and "Freedom of 76."

The album isn't quite as good as the live show, in my opinion. The live band sounded like Crazy Horse playing early 70s John Lennon anthems, and the sound on the album is a little more subdued.

Question for all you hardcore folks: if I wanted to make a mix of the "normal," prettier, or straightforward Ween songs, what ones should go on there? I'm thinking stuff like "Exactly Where I'm At," "Baby Bitch," "I Don't Want It," "Stay Forever," "It's Gonna Be All Right," "What Deaner Was Talking About," etc. I really am only familiar with the major albums, but I'm sure there are some gems out there.

Hmm, something like this comes to mind for poppy/pretty stuff. Tried to cover most albums.

-Don't Laugh I Love You
-Birthday Boy
-Pork Roll Egg and Cheese
-Joppa Road
-What Deaner Was Talking About
-Help Me Scrape the Mucus Off My Brain
-I Don't Wanna Leave You On the Farm
-It's Gonna Be (Alright)
-Exactly Where I'm At
-Even If You Don't
-Transdermal Celebration
-Chocolate Town
-I Don't Want It
-I Fell in Love Today

I think Object would be the clear pick from La Cucaracha. Pure Guava... uh, I guess Sarah is pretty tame?

Though I can't imagine doing a poppy Ween mix and not putting Push th' Little Daisies on it. Maybe the version from Live in Toronto?

Object is a good pick. Hah, yeah Push th' Little Daisies is uh, technically poppy I guess. I'm envisioning this being like a "No don't be scared of Ween" mix and Push just might cross that line a little.

That's why you make a disc 2 that has all the most hosed up/abrasive Ween songs on it!

You could put "Your Party" from La Cucaracha I suppose.

Also if you don't mind stuff not from albums then there is always "Kim Smoltz" (unreleased but you can get it from BrownTracker), "I'll Miss You" from the "Beautiful Girls" soundtrack, and maybe "Beacon Light" from the X-Files album. All pretty accessible. "The Rainbow" is a great tune but the lyrics might not be what you are after.

Edit: Or just the "Live in Chicago" album?

I'm stoked Deaner is coming to the Ottobar again in Baltimore in November. It'd be great if they came to DC so I could get a little crazier (access to public transportation) but I'll take what I can get. I saw them the last time they came around right after they first formed and it was great. I can't wait to see them again since they've been playing together more.

Hello Ween fans,
Today's your lucky day... it's time for the Boognish Rising Thanksgiving 2014 Sampler CD! We have a full length CD made up of demos and b-sides from their first 4 records. All the tapes were transferred here at Boognish Rising HQ so even if there's a couple songs you've heard someplace else... these versions sound a good deal better. A lot better in fact thanks to JWB who was kind enough to lightly remaster everything and make the CD flow nicely. He also threw in some pretty artwork that's available in the dropbox folder.
Download the .aiff files from my dropbox link here which should drag easily iTunes with the correct titles and sequence. It will also be available in FLAC format for download at Browntracker.net. Huge thanks to the generous Mike Miller who supplied the tape most of the songs came off of.
Last but not least thank you to Gene & Dean who both kindly gave their permission and corrected my track titles for this holiday treat. Tracks transferred and compiled by ChrisB.

It's a good god damned shame Ween never came out with a reggae album. They were really good at mimicking the style: King Billy, Fruit Man, Nicole, Mango Woman.

So, Deaner gave out two new (old) previously unheard Ween demos from the Cucaracha sessions last week on Facebook.

The Wolfman
"Ok, I promised Aaron I wouldn't give out demos anymore w/o his approval but i just found this one from cucaracha that i have never really heard and have no idea why it didn't get considered. it's called "the wolfman", we both wrote it and it has a very mid period bowie feel to it with screaming guitars. merry x-mas, this will be the last one for the holidays."
http://www.chocodog.com/chocodog/wolfman.wav

Leave Deaner Alone
"I'm pretty sure this has never been posted before, but since it's Xmas I thought I'd throw it out there. There are 2 studio versions of this song, this is the original demo, cut to 16 track tape, when we re-recorded it Andrew Weiss wanted me to go for a ZZ Top "Deguello" type vibe and it totally didn't work. When I find it I'll post that too, As a side note, people took this song way too seriously, I love interacting with Ween fans and always have. I wrote this at the bar on a napkin though after a guy pulled a Woody Allen move on me straight out of "Annie Hall."

Aaron is going to play the Tonic Room in Chicago less than 1 month after Mickey's big NYE stand there. I didn't go because I am an old man now (also, I was at the Bowie cover show in Berwyn). Did any of you fellas make it?

I wonder if he will use the Brownouts as backup (aka Ween cover band "the Pod") like Mickey did.

That Wolfman song is dope, way better than most of the stuff that made the album.

It's definitely not the same as a Ween show, but Deaner properly delivers the rowdy elements of the band. I've seen the Dean Ween Group twice and both shows have been a lot of fun. Is he coming with most of Ween, minus Gener for Pittsburgh?

Did anyone watch Gene Ween cover Billy Joel at Brooklyn Bowl a couple weeks back? I was at the front of the stage and it was great. Gene was sweating the entire time, but he looked like he was having a great time. It also helped that he looked like he wasn't strung out.

He sounds just like Billy Joel. poo poo, he looks just like him. Screw waiting for tickets to become available to see the real deal at MSG. I was hoping for him to sing Allentown because New Hope isn't that far from there.
