I'm a tiny woman and I had a Note 3. I bought mine pretty much for the pressure sensitive stylus (I'm an artist and I thought it would be awesome to have a digital sketchbook in my pocket) so I guess my motivation was different than most people's, but anyway, it turned out to be a bit too big for every day use, and I switched back to the iPhone 5s despite really liking the Note. Honestly, the big screen is nice but it's such a huge goddamn pain in the rear end to do anything with the phone with one hand, which you do way more often than you'd think. Carrying groceries, phone rings? Gotta drop the groceries because the phone doesn't fit in your pocket so it's in your bag and you have to open it and fish the phone out. Walking the dog, she does something cute. Wanna take a picture without letting go of the leash? Good luck with that. It's just so unwieldy, it's not comfortable to hold. And that's with Android's navigation style, which is in the bottom of the phone (or screen if your phone doesn't have physical buttons). iOS on the iPad is fine because it's a tablet and you're not using it like a phone anyway, but it's gonna be a nightmare on the larger iPhones because it was designed to be used with small screens and the navigation is always on the top of the app.

Also, a lot of people have big Android phones because (at least until very recently) there were no good small Android phones. So it wasn't so much that they were buying the phones because they wanted big phones, they were buying them because the smaller ones had really poo poo specs. Everybody talks about how there's this huge market for large phones based on Android phone sales but no one ever seems to think about the fact that people who want a non-lovely device don't really have a choice when it comes to the size. The lack of good small devices is a pretty common complaint in the Android community.

Not saying that people don't like/want larger screens, just saying it's not necessarily true that everyone wants them, even Android users.

Better than shitting into a fan.
So which version of the iPhone is the one to buy off-contract? http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/

Applying previous logic, one should get the Verizon version (A1549 CDMA) because it works with Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

It seems that the Sprint version (A1586) incrementally supports the TD-LTE and TD-SCDMA bands, but my understanding is that it cannot be unlocked for domestic use.

Why would Apple not release the A1586 as the off-contract version? It doesn't seem to make sense. I travel a ton and would love to have the extra bands for roaming/SIM card swapping.

This is an excellent point, and one think I think was discussed a while back in this or some other related thread. I agree with the underlying notion, but literally 99% of people don't think twice about it, and Apple clearly caved to market pressure.

Yeah I don't really disagree with that, I just honestly think they made a mistake with the 5.5" iPhone. I can totally understand 4.7" (even though I like the smaller size of the 5s better) but 5.5" is way, way too big. I mean...

Just look at it.

I'm a person who has used Android for years and I'm used to huge phones but that... that is just way too goddamn big, and it's made worse by the fact that it runs an OS that was designed for small screens. I hope that hugephone doesn't sell very well and that next year they go regular iPhone size + 4.7" for their lineup. I think that's much more reasonable.

If they don't end up making a 5/5s sized iPhone 7 or whatever, I'm going to be very sad. For me, the form factor of the 5 is perfect and while the 4.7" is all right I think it's a tad too big for my purposes.

Well I guess they're embracing the whole "phablet" nature of it by treating it as a large screen to an extent, i.e. using some iPad layout schemes. It'll be interesting to see how third parties adapt cause if they've been using the new auto layout stuff for iPhone/iPad views, they should get the new big phone optimized view semi automagically. I thought the resolution was curious, I get 1920x1080p is a standard res but it's arbitrary when talking about iOS devices. New PPI screws with the whole screen points system they've established over the last 7 years.

But I'd like the 4" to continue as a new model too, if only to provide a full high end lineup for whatever user preferences. Or some halfway solution like spec equivalent plastic models, I'd be down for a 4" 6C. Plastic haters can deal with the upsell and bigger size.

The result from earlier is probably legit, seemed in line with the 25% boost or whatever mentioned in the presentation. Supposedly there's some other rumor (screen I haven't seen) going around for the 6+ showing 2GB RAM. Don't really care about that myself other than the implications for the iPad line (then I'll be all :argh: if the iPad mini doesn't get 2GB).

I have a dumb question.

iOS 8 comes with iCloud Drive, so I'm assuming I'll be upgraded to it next week. That's fine, but Mavericks doesn't have iCloud Drive support, and I use a ton of Mac apps that sync with my iPhone and iPad via iCloud (Day One, Textastic, etc). Are they still going to sync?

I was in the Yosemite beta and I had to roll back to Mavericks because my apps weren't syncing. I'm assuming it'll work the other way around somehow, because Apple wouldn't release iOS 8 before Yosemite if that didn't work, right?

Yeah I suppose you're right, but that still doesn't solve the problem of the phone being too goddamn big. I guess I'm just annoyed because my most wanted feature is only available on the hugephone (OIS) which means I'll probably end up with one unless a miracle happens and they put it on the smaller iPhone 6s next year. I gave up on my Note 3 because it was unwieldy so I'm really not happy about this.

The Sprint one likely won't have US GSM unlocked, even purchased off-contract, so if you can get a Verizon one off-contract, that should be the way to go. Otherwise, the T-Mobile one they're selling full price, which should technically mean unlocked, but that remains to be seen.

You are aware of the Samsung Galaxy Note lineup right? The 6+ is a few mm taller than the new Note 4, while being a little bit narrower and thinner. I switched from an iPhone to a Note because I needed the larger screen size to get reading done on the go, and despite my preference for iOS over Android, I'd have upgraded to the new Note this October if there were no 5.5 inch iPhone. The 6+ is an ideal device to me, and I'm guessing to a lot of other people.

Yes, I owned a Galaxy Note 3 for a few months. It is too goddamn big and unwieldy for me. I don't have a problem with Apple releasing a huge phone for people like you who enjoy them, though, I just wish they hadn't taken away the standard iPhone size, which millions upon millions of people are perfectly happy with, and I am legit mad that my most wanted feature for the iPhone (OIS) is only available on the huge model.

Hopefully they'll sort it all out next year when it's time for me to upgrade.

Can you speak to your reading use case on a 5.5" phone? I hadn't really considered it, but that's actually the most useful thing to me about a tablet, so maybe a phablet could fill that roll.

Reading on a smaller phone isn't any worse and is usually better. Lighter, easier to use one handed so you don't have to use two hands like you're reading a dumb physical book. Even if you think a 4" iPhone is too small for reading, a 5.5" one is too far the other way to be ideal.

If you're talking about something like technical manuals or whatever, a 5.5" screen likely isn't enough bigger than a 4.7" to make much of an improvement, while still having the ergonomic downsides.

I do plenty of reading for work and at all times of the day since I work with teams in Europe (I get a lot of long emails that I need to approve before they are sent out, and plenty of documents) and it was a real chore on my old iPhone. I also read pretty quickly, so scrolling constantly and reading was a pain. When I switched over to the Note, I found it to be the perfect compromise of screen size and portability. I didn't, and still don't have an iPad with data, so if I received something while waiting on the train platform in the morning I'd have been out of luck even if I chose to carry my tablet around.

Despite all the productivity improvements I got from the bigger screen Note, it was the improvement in reading books for pleasure that really sealed the deal for me. The original iPad mini is what drew me back into reading after years of gaming in every minute I wasn't working, and being able to knock out a chapter or two every time you find some free time (waiting for someone, waiting in line) is pretty much the killer feature I was looking for in a phone.

The larger screen size can be a bit unwieldy at times, but considering that my phone is used as an actual phone for a small fraction of my overall usage, I'd happily make the tradeoff.

I'll agree with the larger phones being much better for reading. I'm excited to see the 6+, I absolutely loved the Note 3 because it was awesome for reading my feeds and any books I had put on there. Didn't really have to worry about how far from my eyes it was. The physical size wasn't a huge bother except not being able to use it one handed in many cases but I don't even use my current 5 one handed that often.

I recently received an iPhone 5C for work use (the whole IT dept did). While its a great improvement over my old work Blackberry, there's something that's bothering me.

I'm a remote tech, so I get a lot of email. I also get pages for high(er) severity stuff. Because I'm remote, I also get pages for stuff not in my immediate region, stuff that I'd never have to deal with cause its all 10+ hours away and there are other techs in the "region" that are waaaay closer.

I want to be able to just put my phone on silent over the weekend and the only notification I want to hear out of the phone are for pages. Fortunately, pages come from a unique email address, so they're already flagged as VIP in mail.app with a unique ringtone.

Is there a way that I can silence my iPhone and ONLY have VIP notifications come through? A base OS setting somewhere? A better mail app?

I want to say that IFTTT will do this. Turn on do not disturb, add IFTTT's number to your favourites, allow calls from them and set up an alert to call (or text) every time you get a specific email.

I'm not sure if this will work or how well, maybe check with the app thread too.

Edit: do not disturb is the setting you want, but I think it only lets calls through from your favourites. There may be a way to have certain emails generate a phone call from a number in your favourites.

If past years are any indication, Apple will restrict shipping to the billing address on file for the account, you have to call your carrier when the device arrives if you're doing a cross-upgrade, and phones will be delivered by UPS.
