I guess it doesn't really qualify as "being close to the Rio", but if you have a car its like a 10 min drive away: there is a pho place called Pho Thanh Huong near the university, which in my opinion at least is cheap and tasty. Another option, the novelty of which may or may not be lost on you depending on where you are coming from, is there is an In N Out on Tropicana west of the strip.

If you don't have a car.. yah I dunno.

If you're going to get pho, why venture all the way over there? Spring Mountain and Valley View has Pho Kim Long, Hot n Juicy, Lee's Sandwiches, DJK Korean BBQ and I think one other decent restaurant.

Yeah it's more of a lounge and bar area vs a place where there's just high limit gaming. Very casual atmosphere but the best Scotch selection I've seen on the strip by far.

If you're into beers and whiskey the Freakin Frog is kinda cool. It's off the strip a little bit and somewhat divey on Maryland Parkway and Flamingo but they have over 400 beers and 300 different kinds of whiskey and Scotch.

Play at the tables with good rules and just do a little bit of counting, and your expectation is to break even, if not win a little. And then you get comps like crazy (although comps on the strip are a lot less generous, getting rooms is easy). Swings are pretty insane still though, you can go hours only being up or down a little, but then you can be +/-5k real quick playing 100/hand.

But all you players dropping 10k on bottle service can handle that much variance I'm sure ;)

Yeah I'm not that baller. And with my luck, I'd be that -5k guy. Last time I played I went up 60% over about an hour and then to +0% in about 10 minutes.

I am very much into beers and whiskey. Speaking of beers, TAG is supposed to be alright for beers, yeah?

Thanks for all the input!

Are there any decent grocery stores (or just someplace I can buy a sandwich and the like relatively cheaply) near the Rio / Flamingo?

Same question goes for liquor. Google maps seems to love to direct me to casino gift shops, which I've heard are overpriced.

Walgreens on the strip has both food and booze. One up near Venetian, one down near PH.

Also, and I hate to say this but you asked: the food court inside Casino Royale. Never eaten there, but I know it's cheap.

If you don't consider any of those "near" the Flamingo, you're lazy and need to walk more IRL.

Edit: Also, Reverend, Downtown Cocktail Room is pretty good. I've always enjoyed myself and the drinks there. Last time I was there it was a bit loud, but they usually ask groups to quiet down or chill out a bit.

Because I go to Vegas only once or twice a year and didn't know any better :) (also, and this will be mega nerdy, but its on the way to the Pinball Musuem) Thanks for the info, I'll check out some of those other places when I come visit in September.

Oh, since we're talking food, what is considered the best for Sushi on the Strip lately? I went to Yellow Tail at Bellagio my last trip and enjoyed it, just wondering if there is other places that you can recommend?

That's subjective. Best sushi in Vegas is off the strip though at Kabuto. If you wanna stay on strip, my personal favorite is Blue Ribbon at Cosmo, Bar Masa and Nobu are up there as well.

It doesn't have to be on strip, I'm willing to drive. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll check out Kabuto when I come. Did you try the omakase there or did you just order ala karte?

I've done everything there. Now I go for the 5 Star Sashimi + Nigiri and then order a la carte. You really should just try every type of fish they're serving that day.

I didn't realize the menu was so laser focused (Just saw that's its basically entirely omakase). I'll definitely give it a try

Yup, walk right in the door. Good until midnight usually.

It will also be way cheaper than day of.

Any recommendation as to a particularly good spot for this? Not too worried about paying cover / drink minimum. Staying at the Hard Rock if that makes a difference.

My wife and I are looking to do a Vegas trip in early December. It will be our fist time out there, and we've heard it's a great time to go because it's not very busy. We are interested in getting a nice room on the strip for about $100/night or less. Should we be jumping on any low rates we see right now, or is it better to wait a bit and see what comes up closer to December?

Sign up for promotional emails from the hotels you'd want to stay at. Last year I got emailed to me a lot of really good not-quite-last-minute December deals.

Also do things like shows and buffets get discounted that time of year?

I'm at work so a quick look through my emails shows that I got some some offers as early as Sept 20 and as late as the first week of December.

It may in fact have a larger range but that was just from three hotels.

How's Vegas in November? I'm considering stopping there for a few days on a trip around SW US. I'm not really a gambler or anything but wouldn't mind soaking in the sleazy atmosphere that the place is supposed to have for a bit. There seem to be quite a few good deals on booking.com so that shouldn't be a problem at least.

I'm heading to Vegas in a few months and tried the Priceline Negotiator (or whatever it's called) and ended up with The Tropicana. Reviews are all over the map, but it looks like most of the recent bad ones involve rooms that weren't remodeled? Should I be ok if I get a remodeled room? I don't need anything fancy, I'm satisfied with clean and safe.

I've stayed in old rooms and new and you definitely want new. The old room I was in had 80s décor/carpet and a mirror on the ceiling. The new room was on par with a Marriott or something- clean and nice. Plus the price difference there is generally minimal between room types.

I’ll be in Vegas over the Labor Day weekend staying at the Wynn. I’m interested in betting and watching college football on Saturday with some friends. Is the Wynn sports book a good place to catch the game, or are there any other casinos folks prefer to bet and hang out?

Also, any suggestions on a good burger joint? I’ve heard a lot about Holsteins in the Cosmopolitan, but anywhere with good burgers and booze would work.

The Wynn Sportsbook is alright in my book, I lost a 4-figure winning ticket and they took the time to hear my sob story, took all of my information, and Fedexed me a check after the requisite 90 days had passed for their accounting. That's customer service, I figured I was just boned.

Gonna be in Vegas with my pregnant wife thus upcoming Thursday through Saturday. Staying at the Palazzo.

So far we've got dinner on Friday (reservations at Raku).

Plan pool on Friday. Buffet (again pregnant wife) and a show that we buy tix for the morning of.

Any suggestions for restaurants (breakfast) for a couple of foodies?

Which buffet is the best to go to? I hear wicked spoon or Caesar's

Go to Absinthe or MJ or LOVE.

Go to Stacks N Yolks (off strip Durango + Warm Springs) tell Baha I sent you. Or Bouchon is good if you wanna stay in your hotel.

Haven't been in forever but Wicked Spoon was good, Bellagio and Caesar's are both good and the Wynn never does anything wrong.

Alright I'm nearing my trip in October. Few things I want to research (mostly touristy poo poo):

-How's that High Roller? Me and the wife are kinda "meh" on it. We're open to do it if people think it's an awesome new addition but if it's just kinda mediocre we'll skip it. For a nice view is the Eiffel tower the place to be? We're also going to do the Strat tower, Mandarin Bar, and a few other places with decent views so I'm not sure we need the Ferris wheel.

-For the NYNY coaster and the Strat rides, is it better to do at night? Aren't most things better at night?

-SLS worth checking out?

Skip the High Roller. It's whatever.

Mandarin Bar is awesome, Foundation Room or Mix is also good, Ghost Bar at Palms. Take a helicopter tour of the strip.

I wouldn't touch the NYNY Coaster or set foot in the Stratosphere. However, Adventure Dome at Circus Circus is fun.

SLS is worth going to for a meal.

Rose Rabbit Lie is still open. Vegas Nocturne, the show within Rose Rabbit Lie, is gone. It's a small but important distinction and part of the reason that place is on the down slope.

So I'm going to Vegas for a birthday party on the 10th of October, and for my buddy's first night there, he wants to go to Hakkasan to see Tiesto. Tickets are $50 for guys, $20 for girls. I did a quick Yelp search to see what people had to say about Hakkasan and boy are they awful reviews. Most people claiming there's a lot of bait and switch, price gouging, fire hazard level crowding, and 3+ hour lines. I've been to a few Vegas clubs before and the most I've waited is ~45 minutes to get in, the prices were always what they said at the door/promoters, and the clubs were not usually so overcrowded that you couldn't move.

Yes, I expect to spend a decent amount of cash at a club in Vegas, and I expect it to be somewhat crowded and there to be a lot of douches, but I have to wonder, are all of these people exaggerating or have they never been to a club before?

I guess my question is, is Hakkasan as bad as the reviews make it out to be or is it just the same standard Vegas club experience?

People who listen to Yelp reviews make me want to kill myself. Yelpers are retarded as a general whole.

It's a Vegas club, buy a ticket and show up early. If you show up at 11:30-12 be prepared to wait. Hakkasan gets incredibly packed at times but so does Marquee, XS, Light or any other club with a big headlining DJ. Everyone stands still and crowds the walk ways and funnels to the dance floor.

Going to Vegas in two weeks. Wednesday to Sunday. Trying to decide where I want to stay. Original plan was all four nights at trump. Easy to get cheap through hotwire. Now I'm thinking staying somewhere else during the week would be fun. It's my girl's first time and we're on our own Wednesday before friends join us.

Going through hotwire it looks like I might be able to get Ceasar's for wed/Thurs for $100. However I'm worried we'll be in the old rooms which I've heard are meh. I think I can get Aria for Wednesday only for the same price. Better idea even if we're moving after one night? My brain is fried from looking at hotel searches and I can't think.

There are some other options at good prices but with the 4 star hotels on hotwire there are more places and it's hard to know what you'll get. And some of the "4 star" properties suck. Girl plans on spending 70% of trip by the pool. So maybe do Caesars for the pool?

Otherwise the plan is a lot of gambling, absinthe, lotus of siam, a new buffet or two (done ceasers and bellagio) and fingers crossed I'll make it to hoover dam this time. Girl likes dancing so debating a club night.
