MacArthur was the one who when the Chinese started aiding North Korea wanted the Nats in Taiwan to attack the mainland and they turned him down on account of being sane and then said we should nuke Beijing right?

MacArthur had publicly predicted that Mao wouldn't get involved in Korea, so he ordered his troops to push straight to the Chinese border in contravention of his own prior orders from Truman, then when Mao's troops crossed into Korea and began scouting and skirmishing with UN troops MacArthur refused to believe his own intelligence reports, including captured Chinese soldiers and documents showing war plans, because it would have meant he had been wrong and he refused to be wrong.

He only admitted it after the real assault started to push his unprepared forward lines back to the 38th.

Yeah, if you want a really great take on his biggest cock-ups, read Bevin Alexander's How Great Generals Win. The man planned and executed one of the greatest amphibious landings of all time at Inchon, could have absolutely trapped and annihilated the North Korean army...and then let them slip away, before pursuing them too far north and drawing China into the fight. He was a man of extremes, he was.

man I remember like four years ago I saw a pseudo-freeper letter to the editor in the local newspaper that started off going "ever since the President has become more involved in the military, like how Truman canned MacArthur, it has increasingly gone to poo poo, according to history" and it eventually ended with "We are living in more of a socialist state by the day. It is hilarious how you can find no one who voted for Barack Obama".

The New York City public school system made the decision not to cancel schools in the outer boroughs. In fact, guidance suggested not informing the students and making sure they had a normal day until the last bell, then explain what had happened that morning before being leaving.

I remember it being a bit strange through the day. One class was told by a teacher who was like "gently caress this poo poo" but didn't talk to any of them that day. Kids were being pulled from class because their parents had asked them home, maybe 15% of the class? Teachers whispering to each other back and forth, until finally our young, enthusiastic science teacher we had for last period was forced to explain what happened. The towers fell completely, straight down, no reports on the casualties. If your parents worked in the towers please report to room so and so and we'll make sure there is family to come get you.

My friend at the time next to me was Pakistani, he and his family had emigrated perhaps five years ago and owned a corner store in my sleepy neighborhood. I vaguely sensed hearing the details that it would be trouble for him. Within a year, boycotts of the Pakistani's store and general harassment made them choose going back to Pakistan was the best option for their safety and economic security. It was unreal. He told me of someone getting accidentally beheaded while he took the train due to the windows not being secured, the poor infrastructure in general. I haven't heard from him in about ten years now.

When I got home from school, my Dad had picked me up that day and was crying. He never cried, but he works in air freight so he understood things about how it could happen, could see clear as day the whole thing from his office window near JFK airport, "like two burning cigarettes in the distance, bright orange embers on their ends." We didn't have cable at the time so every TV station was down, they all had antennae on the WTC, with the exception of (I think) NBC which had a weaker tower on the Empire State Building that could transmit a grainy view of the events. It didn't...register. My dad used to work there, with a good friend of his who was confined to a wheelchair. He had worked on the 97th floor, and said he'd never have left his friend if he still worked there. Amazingly, no one in my family, no close friends lost anyone. Something for which I am eternally grateful yet also leaves me woefully disconnected from the event compared to most New Yorkers.

Nerd that I was I had read of the plane crash at that building, and I wanted to know why, how? I'm a structural engineer now, having taken classes from one of the principle investigators who pieced it together; the building code exceptions, the one-of-a-kind design that was so vulnerable to fire, the way it would pancake straight down long before it could topple. He is still hounded by truthers now and then, and was accosted by one barging into his office unannounced when I went to graduate school less than two years ago. I successfully convinced one truther to abandon his madness with the knowledge I gained but it's just...so much bullshit has happened in the name of avenging those people, or because "things have changed."

I think since that point I needed to know everything I could, including all the dark facts that most people don't like exposing themselves. I read about food safety and biological weapons and political conflicts of interest and tax dodging and weapons development and it's vile but I have to know. I think 9/11, and more broadly the atmosphere after that point made me so intensely focused on knowing all the muck we wade in.

Even as an 11 year old I could look at the people around me and see that everyone had lost their loving minds. When Marvel put out a special edition with all the super heroes standing around asking 'Why?' and Dr. Doom is standing off to the side shedding a single silent tear, I knew that the people in charge of everything everywhere were going off the rails hardcore and things were going to get bad. The constant replay of footage of the towers collapsing and stuff disturbed affected me as I'm sure it did everybody on one level or another, but the stuff the made me feel worst was the outbreak of ugly sentiment against people who seemed 'Middle Eastern'. It reminded me of the Japanese internment camps, which were a Bad Thing safely locked away in the past and now suddenly it almost feels like it can happen again, and how is that possible because America is supposed to have moved forward and gotten better? Suffice to say this experience and having all my teenage years during the Bush administrations have made me kind of cynical about the virtues of our country.

Sorry to get all real, I want to say something funny and edgy, but I'm a boring poster at heart.

9/11 was the only time downtown Chicago was so...dead. Even in the riots, there was some life downtown. Not on 9/11. The trains ran full back, the L went out full and didn't run back. Everything, dead, and eerily silent. The tunnels were sweeped, sweeped again, and again. The CBOE and Fed were fortified by all hands, the taxis gone, the streets empty. Never seen it since.

Through his brilliant and utterly unconventional decision to purposely detach from his line of supply during the Vicksburg campaign, Grant managed to cut the Mississippi and thus doom the Confederacy. Sherman just took advantage of the death blows that Grant had dealt in the western theater. Also his memoirs probably rank with Caesar as the among the best, military or otherwise. In summation Grant ruled :colbert:.

Commander of the army of the Potomac was probably the shittiest command job in the war. The abundance of rivers and confederate controlled rail lines ensured that absent a gigantic confederate blunder, Richmond would be one of the last cities captured. But of course the war commission is breathing down your neck the whole time because Richmond is literally next door.
