Apparently half the owners "don't get it" either since they do a lot of things to increase the power output. And put 9 inch wide wheels on it. It was fun on my test drives but I wanted a little more power from it too. Ended up going a completely different direction.

I get the Hellcat, it's just not my kind of thing. I think they should have played with the Charger to make it spank the M5 through corners.

gently caress yeah. I won't spoil it but I will include the best quote in a head to head comparison. After lapping the Hellcat, editor Kim Reynolds says "it feels like it was developed by Hot Rod's Freibuger and Finnegan". I believe he meant that in a good way , of course!

I hear what you're saying. Many things out there aren't for me, but I can understand why other people might enjoy them. My personal examples:

I don't get pickup truck culture at all, but the SVT Raptor is a great vehicle from the factory. I can appreciate what Ford did there even thought it's not for me.

I personally don't see the appeal of the Miata. I appreciate the car for what it is, but it doesn't float my boat. I can understand how many others would enjoy a small RWD vehicle that handles very well and is a hoot to drive.

Some people don't understand why I would drive an SHO instead of something different at the same price point... it's an expensive gussied up Taurus that doesn't do anything particularly well. I really like the car though, I think it's well rounded and suits my current wants in a vehicle.

A friend of mine prefers to mod his cars. He drives a 630WHP Twin Turbo Pontiac G8 GT. More power to him, but my modding days are over. He spent maybe 35 grand all said and done on his car, I much rather have something I don't have to mess with anymore.

The Hellcat may not appeal to you, but I would say you have to acknowledge the automotive significance of a car like this being built at a 60K price point. Nothing comparable has come out since the horsepower wars of the late 60's early 70's when you could order ridiculous engines in cars, and even those cars were considered slow by today's standards.

Car culture is a neat phenomenon, there's such a broad and diverse group of people out there.

Do you go classic and get a 911?

Ferrari isn't going to give a gently caress because the corvette is still a chevy.

If people stopped buying ferraris because there was something better out there, nobody would have ever bought a ferrari.

Porsche hasn't even aknowledged any of the so-called "911 killers" that keep popping up because they don't have to. They just keep building what they're building, and people keep buying it because it's a 911.

Problem is, China/professional athletes/investment bankers/trophy wives care a lot less about lap times/sev'n hunnerd hosspower than the all important brand image, and they're the ones buying supercars. That's why we're seeing Bentley and Lamborghini SUVs, even if they are just Touaregs given a fancy suit and a box of viagra. The whole "getting embarrassed" by cheaper cars thing is dumb too. The only person who cares is the person driving the cheaper car. It's not like the guy in the Ferrari couldn't have bought a hellcat or clapped out civic with $40k in engine work if he wanted to. As far as the brands themselves are concerned, they don't give a poo poo either. They're resting on the laurels they've had for decades and will continue to have for decades even though there have always been cheaper cars nipping at their heels performance wise.

No, they got rich by inheritance or by making a killing off a timely investment or business decision. You don't become rich through frugal saving and hard work.

Remember the little depression of a few years back? The only market that continued trucking along and experienced growth during a global economic crisis was that for luxury goods. Wealthy people don't give a poo poo that their $10,000 handbag was made the same way as a $10 Walmart handbag, they don't give a poo poo that their $50,000 Patek doesn't keep time as well as a $50 Casio, and they don't give a poo poo that their $1,000,000 Bugatti can't go around a race track as quickly as a $100,000 Viper.

Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, and all the other exotic marques are luxury brands and luxury brands have never been about the product; they're about exclusivity, social cachet, and conspicuous consumption.

The only thing that will ever seriously harm Ferrari is making a car that normal people could afford.

That's simply not true, though, as Ferrari has almost gone out of business numerous times. Hence, ya know, being owned by Fiat.

quote:

Ferrari Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo resigned after 23 years at the helm of the super-car maker because of a clash over strategy with Sergio Marchionne, chief executive officer of parent Fiat SpA. (F)

Montezemolo, 67, will step down effective Oct. 13, Turin, Italy-based Fiat said today in a statement. Marchionne, who had publicly expressed disappointment with Ferrari’s Formula One performance, will take charge of the unit.

Discussions over Ferrari’s future and its racing potential “led to misunderstandings which became clearly visible over the last weekend,” Marchionne said in the statement. “I want to thank Luca for all he has done for Fiat, for Ferrari and for me personally.”

The Formula One spat masked deeper divides over the future of Ferrari’s role in the group. The Maranello-based company, which is 90 percent-owned by Fiat, is a key component of Marchionne’s plans to expand in luxury cars to better compete with Volkswagen AG, which owns Lamborghini among its stable of high-end nameplates.

This will still be dominated by the same pony cars. So the Hellcat weighs 4000 lbs and has 707 horsepower, can you point out to me a 2000 lb car with 350? Even if the ND Miata hits their weight target of 2200 lbs, and magically makes 175hp a V6 mustang is cheaper and has more horsepower per pound.
