Since hitting the Shadows just as they become startled still seems to trigger an Advantage as long as it's done from the back, I just run up to them and hit them as they generate the "!", seems to work and I don't have to fight with the weird field of vision too.

I was just playing SMT1 on my iPad to kill some time and I just entered the second floor of the ECHO building right after fusing Cerberus and who else greets me but Fiend David. I didn't even know fiend encounters were in SMT1. I looked it up, and he's loving level 99. Then I found out he has a 1/256 chance of showing up. :shepface:

I'm playing Persona 2 innocent sin on my Vita and I'm curious what stats I want to level. I'm putting most of them in Dx and some in vitality since they increase your sp and hp. I just don't want to accidentally gimp my character if that is at all possible in this game.

Dx is really useful in both P2 games because physical attacks are rendered pointless for the most part, since many personae have physical attack skills, and SP recovers by walking around the field at a pretty good rate. I'd also go for spending your money on better armor than weapons, if you're short on cash in-game.

Tech is by far the most important stat. I don't remember if it was renamed in the PSP remake (maybe it's Dx now??), but it's whatever one boosts SP. Throw a few points into Agility and Vitality when you feel like but you should make maxing out Tech a goal on as many characters as possible. This is easy with Tatsuya obviously, but the only thing you can do with the rest is equip personas that have a Tech boost for level ups.

If you can get the Vitality-boosting accessories from the casino that's one less thing to worry about as well. Don't bother putting any points into Strength.

Magic is the most important, Vitality being the second. Luck's third if only because you'll get more use out of it than Strength since your demons should be doing the heavy lifting.

Edit: To expand on that, Magic boosts your MAG and can give your demons bonus stats, which is nice. Vitality is good because dying loving sucks, especially once you realize you haven't saved in a half-hour. Luck helps you avoid nasty things like getting ambushed and ties into a mechanic later in the game. Strength would be good except for the part where Raidou at 40 STR with the best possible sword for stabbing/slashing poo poo can't do half of what a well-prepared demon can do.

So the 1/256 encounter rate for Fiends in SMT IV is a callback? That sure does justify its existence! :shepicide:

SMT IV is basically made of callbacks. Hell, even Minotaur and Medusa being the first two bosses and Charon existing are callbacks to Megami Tensei I and II.

I never noticed until yesterday but the terminal theme from SMTIV is the same song from SMT1. :v:

There's no "formula" for negotiations in SMT1, like how you can go "Cheat/Comply -> Refuse -> End Talks" in SMTIV and get a demon easy, is there? I am absolutely terrible at negotiations and these guys keep asking me for all of my MAG or stuff I don't have and they immediately start punching if I don't/can't comply with demands. :argh:

Nope. Int helps slightly with negotiations, though, so you should raise that. In fact, I actually had 40 Int by the time I finished the game. (Granted, that's because Str is generally better than Stm in SMT I.)

Dexterity is ridiculously overpowered so yeah get that poo poo to 99 pronto. Dx is pretty much the jack of all trades stat since it periodically raises a bunch of other stuff when you level it up. A maxed dx stat will make you virtually unkillable via magic as well as having a bottomless SP pool.

It is also good because Emperor personas (the ones the MC has best compatibility with) have low dexterity so pumping up Dx becomes even more advantageous, you can fit your stats to cover for your persona's weakness while your persona can have the stats to cover your weakness. Works out nicely. So yeah, dexterity strong.

INT does not merely help slightly with negotiations, I'm pretty sure a minimum level of INT is required to recruit demons usually in accordance with how strong they are so it's a pretty important stat for that reason alone because without a decent level of INT the point where the world ends and you have to recruit a new team of demons from scratch becomes almost impossible.

Fairly sure this is just untrue; you can recruit any demon with any INT score. It's just really unlikely regardless of when you try it if its low. I'm pretty positive that recruiting a Pixie is just as unlikely as Scylla if you have base INT. Likewise after Thor's nuke, you don't need to recruit new demons at all; all your old ones can be found in that dungeon. Ignoring INT is not advisable because it gives you a hard time in general, not just because it makes anything virtually impossible.

Like I'm pretty sure if you did a run where you just dumpstat INT it could still be finished no problem. It'd just be slow and not as fun. At least until you get Charm Bullets then whether you have demons or not is less important than "does this thing reflect/null guns?"

1/256 is also significantly less frustrating when you can just mash two buttons to step in and out of a room instead of entering a sequence of commands to leave and re-enter an entire map area.

edit: don't get me wrong, finding fiends in SMT1 is still dumb, but it's like a few minutes of dumb instead of hours of dumb

A higher encounter rate would also be significantly less frustrating. As someone who genuinely loves SMTIV, doing that poo poo for the sake of a callback is one of the most idiotic things I have seen in an SMT game and I have seen a lot from this franchise.

I think some of the later games might have done that. Like the first Devil Summoner on the Saturn maybe? I don't think the earlier ones did.

I know this is the general MT/Persona thread, but I just started replaying SMTIV a few weeks ago and just got the Chaos Path for the first time (my three previous playthroughs were Neutral, Nothingness and Neutral) and, I know people like to diss on the characters (not completely unjustified, though) at this point of the game because it seems like they take a turn for the dumbest (spoilers for whoever hasn't played it/gotten this route), but after hearing his piece and how he decided to bite the bullet, watching Walter peacefully accept that he's about to die, seeing him sit down and then staring at how he seemingly gets gutted like a fish, I may have let a few, very unmanly tears.

THEN, the game decided to be a real dick about it and confronted me with Isabeau. gently caress, I wasn't expecting a game to make me whimper and sob like a 6 year-old. :cry:

To be fair the neutral paths are usually terrible too because your directly or indirectly championing humanity and lets be honest here, folks, it's their fault to begin with in basically every game.

Monsters have their own strengths and weaknesses you can apply to them and make for, there's still enough individuality between them that certain ones are better plus certain ones have unique abilities to them that are generally worthwhile. Every dungeon in every SMT game ever are terrible and bad. This is the series that gave us both DDS' final dungeons, all of Kagutsuchi, TARTARUS, Sector E, every dungeon from Persona 1, etc.

None of SMT4's dungeons were ever immediately worse than the myriad of dungeons that existed in this franchise and SMTIV did a better job of not making them seem like dungeons compared to basically every other SMT game ever made.

I kind of liked a couple of DDS dungeons (EEG and the one with the warden you had to get away from) but generally SMT does have kinda lovely dungeons.

DDS2's final and Sector E though, Jesus H. Christ.

I actually like almost all SMT dungeons, they are usually challenging, long and interesting to navigate compared with most things in the genre. It is only occasionally (though usually at least once in each game) where there is a section or two that is downright annoying.
I actually liked Tartarus mechanics wise which I realize seems to be a super unpopular opinion. While the physical and aesthetic dungeon design itself was boring, the very long pacing between save/teleport points combined with the randomness made each stretch feel like a real tense endurance run where you had to think carefully about conserving resources; but if you died, since the layout was random, you were not literally going through the same areas again on your next try.
I thought that Persona 4 felt a bit disappointing how it drastically reduced the dungeon length and "endurance run" quality of the dungeons, though everything else about the game was drastically improved so it balances out as a better game

The SMT4 areas were disappointing because they felt like they barely qualified as interesting/challenging dungeons compared to the other entries in the series. There were a few good touches though, like some interesting use of verticality and the feel of going through an actual city.
