1TB SSDs are reaching under $500, it's time to buy one and replace the last spinning disk in my house.

spinning disks are fine for movies plus if it's storage media as opposed to system whatever media then it's irresponsible to use ssd for it I reckon

I upgraded system to ssd and yes massive difference but upgrading rest would be like using money to wipe my rear end

ssds are fast not because flash is an inherently faster mechanism than magentic drives but because of the level of parallelisation available so larger drives can move bigger files faster because more parallel writings and readings this is true up to a point. what is that point

the controllers tend to stop at specific numbers of channels so it stops scaling up depending what size nand chips they use & this is why sometimes u get lower bandwidth on the smaller capacities its limited for sequential stuff by sata iii atm they have lower latency because its inherently faster tho theadder fucked around with this message at 09:15 on Sep 12, 2014 |

It's faster in every way. Also better. And sexier.

ban this sick filth The Pinnacle of Storage Performance Delivers the performance of hundreds of hard disk drives in a single server Reduces I/O and bandwidth bottlenecks with sustained read performance up to 2,900 MB/s sustained write performance up to 2,200 MB/s random 4K block read throughput up to 252,000 IOPS random 4K block write throughput up to 76,000 IOPS http://ocz.com/enterprise/z-drive-4500-pcie-ssd

echinopsis posted:ssds are fast not because flash is an inherently faster mechanism than magentic drives but because of the level of parallelisation available seek time is the real killer for hard drives. moving the heads to the right area of the disk and spinning the platter to the right position is incredibly slow. SSDs eliminate this. for general computing this is much more significant than data throughput.
