Matthew McConaughey gives the performance of a lifetime as a Texas cop who moonlights as a killer for hire. All three of these movies, incl. Bernie, are pretty entertaining. I definitely wasn't expecting to like Partridge, but even though Coogan is a major dealbreaker for me, it was pretty entertaining. It may not be a super dark comedy, but come in with no expectations and it may surprise you a bit. Looking at the Comedy section of Netflix, Super, Goon, World's Greatest Dad, Sightseers, Fargo, and Barton Fink are all legit great movies. Some of them get rather dark, as well. Four Lions is loving great. The Comedy is probably the most uncomfortable movie, but I love it. gently caress I Sell The Dead and Burke & Hare. I legit hate movies where people sell corpses, across the board, though.

Looks like Filth, from the novel by Irvine Welsh, has just been added to the US Netflix (it's been on the UK one for a bit). The title is appropriate, in all meanings of the word. It's not for everyone, (I loved it when I saw it at the cinema, a few older people walked out) but the central performance, from James McAvoy, is definitely worth your time.

Checked out Lords of Dogtown yesterday, dug it quite a bit. No clue how accurate it was, but thought it had some pretty solid performances. I figure it just means I finally have to watch Dogtown and Z Boys to see how it measures up. Followed that up with Re-Animator cause it's been years and variety is the spice of life!

I didn't expect total accuracy out of Lords, so I think it'll be pretty interesting to see the differences. This morning, I watched Kid Cannabis, based on a the true story of an 18 year old dropout who setup a massive pot smuggling ring. Netflix recommended as a comedy, but it did not strike me as much of a comedy at all. Was fairly serious throughout, but had some laughs. So, maybe dramedy? I dunno. That said, I wasn't blown away and it was never very exciting, yet I found myself pretty interested to see where the story was headed. Might be worth your while if you have some time to kill. Or a bowl to smoke.

Just watched Cannibal: the Musical. Really silly and low budget early Trey Parker thing. Really enjoyed it because I like dumb poo poo. There's a Native American tribe called the Nihon jin. That's the level this thing operates at. It has a bit of a Troma feel to it but make no mistake it doesn't even come close to the greatest musical of all time, Poultrygeist.

Invaders From Mars is a weird movie. It starts promisingly enough, but the plot really falls apart in the second half with way too many contrivances and cute coincidences. I don't really get what audience they were targeting for this either. I assume kids around the protagonists age were a focus (and they probably wouldn't mind the script falling apart in the second half), but as someone mentioned earlier, the monsters in this are pure nightmare fuel for impressionable kids. I know it would have scarred me if I saw it at the right age...

It's the same with Ghostbusters and Gremlins; that kind of film was pretty common in the 80's. Back then filmmakers seemed to understand that children could take and even enjoy a good amount of horror, as long as they left out the gore.
