I've gotten that issue in a few places too, but not in recent playthroughs. Alas, I've changed so much between playthroughs that I'm not totally certain how or if I fixed it. :(

I think I'm going to try out that mod and see if it works but if there's a better/non-mod solution I'm definitely open to it. I've been skimming the comments for CoT but didn't see anyone complaining about the same issue and general googling hasn't turned up much.

I'm going to assume I'm not the only goon who's gotten in over their heads with modding Skyrim. About a month ago I had issue, after downloading and installing a bunch of mods (using NMM), that caused me to have to system refresh windows 8. It was fairly painful, and yet, I'm back again, because the idea of modding Skyrim, and the mods that I got glimpses of, are drawing me back.

But obviously, I want to be smarter about it. For one, I'm using Mod Organizer instead of NMM, as I'm hoping that keeping a cleaner Skyrim data folder will prevent main issue I had from popping up again. How I had gone about it before was pretty much follow Gopher's Beginner Guides to a tee. And that worked... until I struck out on my own and tried to download as many interesting mods that I could find.

So I'm thinking I need to take my time when adding mods, to make sure I don't break things (or if I do, that it's traceable), and try to test each before going whole hog, it just seems like that might be overkill.

TL;DR - Any advice on how slowly I should go about adding mods, and if there are ones that I should focus on before going after others? I mainly am looking to add "quality of life" improvements such as SkyUI, Convenient Horses, etc., but the additional content mods are really tempting as are ones that tweak follower, enemy and dragon AI, and, of course, visuals. I just found STEP, and it seems like it could be a good foundation, but there's something about modifying .ini files that always makes me nervous. Anyone here done this? I didn't see it mentioned in the OP.

I don't have any suggestions for mods themselves, but you seem like you give a poo poo. Go find TES5Edit. This will show you where different mods bump into each other in a clear manner. Use it to straighten out the conflicts yourself.

The only INI file editing you should be doing is the stuff that's required for ENB, the one tweak to fix arrows, and if you want, the one tweak that lets you display your favorited weapons all at once on your character. Any graphical tweaks can be done by dropping the Steam Skyrim Launcher into MO's executable menu and running it through there.

Should you make an unwanted tweak that fucks up your game, you can always go into Mod Organizer -> Profiles -> Profile Name through Windows Explorer and delete the INI files, and run the Steam Launcher through MO again, giving you a fresh set of files.

TES5Edit is a good tool to learn but not something crucial as long as you're not using a bunch of mods that have major conflicts with one another. You can usually get away with a load order sort and a bashed patch.

My personal favorite QoL/game tweaking mods right now are:
Frostfall for the added complexity it adds to the game
Even Better Quest Objectives for turning off map markers and letting the quest description lead the way
A Quality World Map because the clear map with all roads is the best map
Dragon Priest Mask Journal for adding a book to the game loosely describing where each mask can be found without being completely cheaty about it

Yesterday I really started getting into Better Vampires as I've just finally started Dawnguard and went with the vampires. Better Vampires fleshes out vampirism with a feeding based levelling system, siring, and more skills like Induce Fog and Vampiric Sight. I'd also like to give mention to SkyRe which has been an awesome overhaul and renewed my interest in the game. I played about 60 hours with SPERG and now 20 with SkyRe and I really like what it does to the game. A resource I don't see mentioned a whole lot here that is pretty good even if the humor is a bit :downs: is tesgeneral. The Skyrim Guide they have over there has a whole boatload of recommendations and explanations.

haha I read all the recommendations to add mods slowly and test everything as you go and was like :effort: and ended up installing like 150 mods simultaneously. I have no idea what I'm doing, just memorized some directions from this thread about how to do bashed and merged patches and otherwise let LOOT and MO sort that poo poo out.

My game only crashes a little bit :downs:

Really, only overhaul and quest mods are the ones you should be worried about. Stuff that only adds stuff to the leveled lists or as static objects such as armor or weapon mods you can install without any fear of messing up anything major.

In your opinion as a ventern modder, how should Skyrim be enjoyed if I have completely played through the vanilla campaign and side quests when it first came out, but lost my save game, haven't tried the DLC, and feel like the skill/leveling system was a bit unsatisfactory?

Just SPERG? I wouldn't mind playing through and feeling like a walking god...

So does a bashed and/or merged patch needed if you only have a handful of mods? If so, I assume you should update it as you add more mods? I'm trying to figure out how necessary it is to do this step, especially if I'm running LOOT and show no conflicts in MO.

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say no, not really. I have had all those installed for the last couple of playthroughs and they mostly add either new locations or somewhat tedious quests. Specially the giant quest is just a waste of time with with some normal armor rewards and a bossfight against a giant that has like 20k-60k health or something absurd.

Some of them are good tho, i really enjoyed "Sorcery" for its great leveldesign, but it has some tedious searching for questitems and atrocious voiceacting. The Pit Fighter mod is also really cool if you missed the Oblivion arena.

Sea of Ghosts is pretty uninspired where nothing really happens and it takes up prime modding real estate in the Solitude docks (a fair few mods like to add a ship here).

All the new locations look pretty good, but ultimately feels like a waste of a modinstall to me since most of the time absolutely nothing happens in these new locations and there is nothing to do.

The great thing about a bashed patch is most of the time you can build the patch without messing with any of the default selections. Sometimes you'll end up with a patch that only needs to merge one or two things but you can be assured everything is working together smoothly by making it just in case.

This brings to mind another important point that cannot be overstated. ALWAYS read the documentation for every mod you install. Yes it is tedious.. For whatever reason the modded may NEED you to change someone when making a bashed patch otherwise it will completely unravel everything he's done. There's a reason the Nexus emoticon is :nexus:

To add further, I haven't played them all yet, but the Oak one I had to uninstall last year because of crash issues and I haven't heard of it being fixed without maybe some heavy time investment to figure out how to fix it yourself.

Gave No Mercy a try yesterday, it was rather awful, 5 minutes of walking down a dark featureless samey corridor smashing a skeleton every now and then with loot rewards inappropriately good for the difficulty with a daedric dagger and +5 permanent melee bonus at the end, I'd disable it if I wasn't worried it would cause issues by doing so.

Pit Fighter is really good fun, especially with the travelling to other provinces. I played the one with the giant and it was poo poo, go to random island, get some equipment, wander through tiny cave, fight giant that has been set to 1.5x size, get generic loot chest. Then I played the one with the Daedric realms and they were loving tiny. Three new areas, one of them literally just walking past a bookshelf and clicking an item, the other two not much better. And I had to uninstall Oakwood or whatever because it made Lakeview Manor crash constantly. I haven't bothered with the rest.

I've just downloaded the 'Legendary Skyrim' bundle on steam, thought I'd see what I'm missing out on with regards to mods.

But blimey, I feel like a complete computer illiterate with all these steps to organise and get mods, I'm worried that I'm going to make one mistake somewhere and gently caress everything up. :(

I've downloaded:
-SKSE first, followed the vid tutorial
-downloaded Nexus Mod Manager

Using the mod manager so far, I've downloaded =
-SkyUI
-That new start mod

Other than that I've tweaked the mouse settings in the SkyrimPrefs file so that it didn't seem so goddamn laggy. Is there anything that looks seriously out of place so far? Is there any particular order I should download mods in? Do I need BOSS or anything else? And are there any recommended mods I should look at? I've got my eye on downloading =
-SPERG
-All the unofficial patches
-Something to stop dawnguard vampire attacks
-Immersive armours
-some more lore friendly weapons
-Maybe Frostfall if I'm feeling adventurous

Is there anything I need to ensure ie which order I need to download the above in?

Sorry for the absolute barrage of questions, I would really appreciate any advice you all could give a new inexperienced-with-computers-modder! :frogbon:

This one right here.

Here's an HD Dragon pack.

The first thing you should do is throw Nexus Mod Manager into your Recycle Bin and download Mod Organizer. Here are Gopher's vids on how to use every corner of it and here's a text guide that won't take several hours to watch. Gopher's channel is a great go to for almost anything Skyrim modding, though. Mod Organizer not only does everything Nexus Mod Manager does and better. Including utilizing the "Downlowad With Manager" button on Nexus itself! Mod Organizer also has load order sorting integrated through the next iteration of BOSS called LOOT.

The mods you have listed there are a good start. Once you've got that list of things you've got your eye on downloaded, installed, and working together nicely with no crashes you'll be ready to venture into the OP and wade through the massive list of mods there. Recommendations are going to vary wildly as people like different things but personally I really like Frostfall along with Wet & Cold, Morrowloot 4E Edition, Apocalypse Spell Package, Dragon Soul Relinquishment, Thunderchild, Immersive Patrols, and Run For Your Lives/When Vampires Attack.

There's also Skyrim Redone, which is a big overhaul mod that, for my taste, makes no changes to the game I disagree with. It's really impressive. I'll let the poster whose post convinced me to try it out explain further:

OwlFancier posted:

I've used both, and I definitely prefer SkyRe.

SPERG works well as just a perk rebalancer, and is a definite improvement over basic skyrim. However, I find SkyRe's perks more interesting. In terms of changing how you play the game, things like the conjuration zombie maker, the racial powers overhaul, the archery options, the crafting extensions, blood magic and staff specialisation in alteration, and the unique weapon effects for every kind of weapon in the game, including the many, many new kinds added by SkyRe... Well, I just can't really go back to anything else. The abundance of perks means that you really need to focus and play a class which makes every character feel distinctly different. You can't master everything at once and you subsequently need to find different ways around problems, using magic if you're a mage rather than breaking out your gear and beating people over the head with it, using stealth as a rogue not because it's hideously OP but because you're actually not very good in a fight otherwise, that sort of thing. It also adds a bunch of really cool spells, I mean, a basic spell is a spell that causes people to explode into spiders when they die, and it's contagious.

That and being able to go magic super saiyan as a breton or turning khajiits into sonic the hedgecat just makes it so much fun for me.

The combat overhaul also makes it so that you win more by being good at it than by having super powerful gear, the gear helps, but if you can timed block and hit back at the right times, you'll go a lot further, and there's even perks to make that even better if you use longswords/bastard swords.

What are your specs and are you using ENB? ENB is super demanding as its an amateur, unoptimized hack. ENB does come with a RAM unlocker now so the first place I'd suggest going is over to the Skyrim Stability Guide and following along with each major step and see how your performance is between each. I've found the game's launcher to be pretty liberal with the system detection and will set everything as high as it will go.

A quick note about Mod Organizer. The way it handles mods is by putting them into its own mods folder, leaving you with a clean Skyrim folder. This lets you switch between entire mod profiles and associated saves really easily. On the troubleshooting side of that, it also makes starting your game slightly more convoluted. Make sure you select SKSE and use the "Shortcut" dropdown in Mod Organizer if you want to launch your game without opening Mod Organizer every time.
