Made a little cyberpunk jam on the old hardware. Was fun playing with the reverb effect. Gets more interesting later in the track (still just a loop though)

I art

My week has been learning soft plugins and the fundamentals of subtractive synthesis, while basking in synth history.

Dean Friedman's three-part 1985 introduction to synthesis has been better than years of reading, and everyone should watch them multiple times:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atvtBE6t48M

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJkxGvhOS-M

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zK3m8sMkTE4

Next to that I've been watching the two part I Dream of Wires: Hardcore Edition documentary. Hour-and-a-half of history, two-and-a-half hours of the modern modular scene. It kinda goes up its own rear end in some parts of the modern, but it's a good watch if you're into electronic music:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icGWQZw5n24

I've started acquiring parts for my first hardware synth :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smFKx6gfOd0

Earlier in the thread I asked for advice, ended up picking up a copy of Ray Wilson's Make: Analog Synthesizers as well as The Art of Electronics:

Seriously, combine these two and I'd be damned if you didn't find some inspiration, especially in regards to modern op-amps if you wanna start making your own VCOs:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FYHt5XviKc

Basically, I need to get a feel for the construction of the electronics. Luckily, I run an electronics shop, so after hammering out all the nuances of how i understand analog gear and how its constructed with contemporary components, it should become second-nature. Depending on how it goes, all of this is starting me down a road of creating some educational synths to help kids understand electricity a lil' better. I've got a 4'x8' plasma table and an awesome powdercoating shop available, I might churn a few modules out.

Thanks SA synth thread for all the inspiration, I'm gonna try and document what I can and keep y'all updated as it moves forward!

So this time, instead of buying the CZ-1000 that showed up locally, I'm going to try to program Phase Distortion synthesis in Python. Sine waves and sample rate fuckery can't be that hard, can it?

Actually tempted to do this on an FPGA instead. It seems REALLY simple in that domain.

Yes because running out of time and having to cut a long track short is exactly the kind of problem I face on a daily basis with synthesis.

Hi-res quarter sinewave in a lookup table and read it at variable speeds derived from a MHz clock, right?

There's some dude on Gearslutz called acreil who's got a wealth of information on DX-style FM strewn through his posts, and I think he's coded some proof-of-concepts as well, but not on FPGAs as far as I know.

The only part that's going to take either some Casio design docs or some hashing out are the clock speed envelope shapes. Guess I could just simulate for a while and solve for known waveforms.

But yeah its super simple to implement. Never tried out the DAC on my dev board, guess it's time to build an audio frontend for it.

E: DX FM on FPGA would be a cinch if only because you can follow the Chowning patent.

I know you modular fags don't much care for commercial 'EDM' but I've been quite enjoying the new Knife Party single and the main synth patch (in the Drop) has peaked my production interest. I know the solution is pretty simple because I've come across that timbre by sheer accident before. Is it Oscillator Sync???

Shruthi oscillator code has some CZ style stuff in it:

https://github.com/pichenettes/shruthi-1/blob/master/shruthi/oscillator.cc

Phase distortion code starts at line 222. It doesn't make much sense without surrounding context of the code architecture, but if you're smart and take your time, you can probably figure it out.

Yeah, two saws, osc2 synced to osc1, with osc2 pitch tied to an envelope to make it decay in pitch I think.

Definitely. I have an Akai Miniak, which is literally just a Micron in a sturdier case, and it has plenty of good, usable sounds.

Caveat: if you like to make patches from scratch, know that it's pretty much 100% menu-diving here.

A DK Synergy II+ showed up for sale locally today, and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with them? From what I've read online, I wouldn't actually need to hunt down a Kaypro to edit it, and could get away with using an emulator and a USB-to-RS232 to edit patches.

Anybody know what expression does on a Volca keys? Is it aftertouch, or pressure sensitivity or what? It's only mentioned in the MIDI chart and not in the extremely short and lovely manual.

Jupiter 4 maybe. That's shown in the extremely subtle HINT. I don't think the System 1 can do more then 4 notes.

They gave proper designations for where the controlled parameters differ from those in the midi spec, so expression has just got to be expression. Probably.

Midi spec has two volume controls, envisioned as cc#7 for setting a fixed max level and cc#11 (expression) for manipulating/automating during a performance, usually organ style with a pedal. So it's likely a simple volume control, I'd guess.
