As a fellow non-American I agree with the sentiment, but the answer is obviously "they can't, this is either fake or illegal"

It's illegality depends on the state and what exact for of insured healthcare they are providing. If you're the form of profession that takes certain insurances (usually through an applied panel system) you can technically accept or deny people on basis of their insurance. Therapists and Psychologists do it frequently because certain insurances pay like poo poo so they will only accept them if they desperately need clients. It has a lot to do with the lobby of whatever profession you have and how well they advocate you to different companies.

BonHair posted:As a fellow non-American I agree with the sentiment, but the answer is obviously "they can't, this is either fake or illegal" I can tell you're not American just by the fact that you believe we must have laws that would protect people against this sort of poo poo. If you assume something can't be legal in the United States because it is blatantly abusive or nonsensical, you will be wrong a depressing percentage of the time. Anyway, the real reason the sign is bullshit is that there is no such thing as "Affordable Care Act insurance." There are just some new regulations that govern insurance providers.

I haven't had insurance for a few years now and it never ceases to amaze me how much some people hate the idea of someone getting medical care they need without going into bankruptcy. Centripetal Horse posted:Anyway, the real reason the sign is bullshit is that there is no such thing as "Affordable Care Act insurance." There are just some new regulations that govern insurance providers. Exactly. Everyone covered under the ACA has an insurance card from an independent insurance company (except maybe the Medicaid expansion). The old plans that weren't under the ACA have mainly been fazed out. Often times, when people lost their doctors it was because their insurance provider consolidated it's network for cost reasons. Not because those doctors decided they didn't want to cover ACA patients. This was someone trying to make a point or scare people into thinking their own doctors were dropping coverage. Amused to Death posted:I think doctors can refuse plans on the exchanges though? To my knowledge the exchange plans are different than the private plans offered off the exchanges for individual or employer consumption, and doctors are free to choose which insurance they accept(exchange plans might have lower rates when it comes to reimbursal) They can choose not to accept a certain plan (aka exchange), but they've always been welcome to do that. I guess it is an OMG CRISIS because all of a sudden your doctor is outside your network when you were promised that it wouldn't happen. But doctors move in and out networks all the time, especially when they are associated with a hospital system that has to negotiate with insurers. And then she's a little sad at the end.
