Its not over yet, I think there are still 2 or 4 more episodes. Its basically 2 minutes of pretty interesting sci-fi ideas wrapped up in 38 minutes of "ummm... why are you doing this..." but its also quickly degenerating into some sorta monster from space movie too. Spoiler on whats happened so far So evil corporation goes off to find Unobtanium in asteroids, which also extends life I guess? Alien entity is found out there and drives people crazy and gets space girls pregnant. Evil corp leaders dangle Hallie Berry as bait, she gets pregnant, they steal babby from her and try to cover it up. Babby can mind control people and put people into delusional states where anything they want happens, sort of like Grand Theft Auto. Babby's immediate goal has been to steal his mom's space password, probably to download space porn. We have yet to see what space baby looks like, all we have seen is its doggie vision. Also some poo poo is going down with Terminator baby and Australian John Conner who wants to destroy all toasters, but the parents of baby Terminator spend more time with their coffee mugs than the T-1000. Its not good. Its not mind numbingly bad, but just barely skirts the line above it. Every character seems to be degenerating quickly into "I'M GOING TO DO THE DUMBEST THING POSSIBLE NOW". On the plus side, every time you ask yourself "Wait... why did that guy just do that..." the answer is always:

This show is just getting sillier every episode. I really like the kid that plays Ethan. I hope they can incorporate him into the show's plot more before it inevitably gets cancelled. The one thing that this show has shown about the future that I hope we have (someone could probably make one already) is that emergency flarephone. I want one.

There was an interesting story point shown in the latest episode: Molly has a vision/flashback to an auto crash in which she lost her husband AND her baby. I don't think we knew that she'd been pregnant before and this happened. It should have come up earlier in the season because it helps explain why she is so determined to not lose her new child even though it's some human/alien hybrid (that is going around killing people). Season 2 should be Odin's anti-robot group vs. Ethan vs. the Alien You could buy a 7-11 pre-paid phone, charge it and leave it in your glove compartment in case of emergency. With the days getting shorter and the inevitable end of DST approaching, what I want is a set of those night-vision contact lenses.

Binary Logic posted:You mean sillier in a good way, right? Like Orphan Black, Continuum, Warehouse 13, Lost Girl...? I... can't really decide, personally. The plot of this show is so bonkers and all over the place, and yet it hasn't really gotten boring. I can't even tell why. there's nothing amazing about anything here, except maybe the well thought out futuretech, but nothing is atrociously bad either. I'm not even sure if the show knows how silly it's gotten yet, which is at least something you could say for Orphan Black and etc.

I definitely mean sillier in a good way. I love watching dumb shows as long as they keep me entertained. I know I could have an emergency prepaid phone in my car, but I want a glow-stick phone that you have to crack to activate it. It just looked so cool.

Okay, HOW MANY shows is Hiroyuki Sanada going to play a mysterious magical immortal on now?

This show has a too-obvious habit of building the mystery around a person for a while and then laying it all out in one big expository story, complete with flashbacks. And: Like many of today's youth, Ethan is a ticking time bomb.

Was it good? Or at the least entertaining? Do you feel like the show has been a worthy journey so far? I ask because I gave up after the first few episodes and am wondering if it's worth catching On Demand.

Its about equal to Falling Skies I'd say in quality, so if you really hate that show you'll hate Extant. Its better than Under the Dome (I assume season 2 didn't get any better) or Helix. I think them burning 2 episodes at a time though doesn't bode too well for a renewal, and the ratings seem pretty blah with it coming in last for its time slot the last few weeks. The plot has settled into a pretty formulaic and predictable story though so not gonna miss a lot if it doesn't get renewed. I expect season 1 to end on a cliffhanger unfortunately. This weeks episode is the season finale.

Well it wasn't quite a cliffhanger... but what exactly happened at the end there? I guess the alien survived?

It's definitely not the best show, but that finale was solid (barring the weird monologue at the end that tried to hit you over the head with the themes throughout the show).

In hindsight i wonder if the very initial idea for this story was "what if humans faced extinction from two tropes at the same time? Aliens and developing AI. Let's write a story that expands on that." Then instead of sticking to bigger picture macro problems with exciting elements such as alien invasions and anti-technology terrorist groups, we got a micro show focusing around Academy Award Winner Halle Berry, her boring as gently caress family drama and a convoluted yet boring "Mystery" storyline involving her work (which ultimately resulted in a uturn with the space people actually becoming good guys at the end). The alien invasion aspect should have been revealed in the first episode and set up as a constant threat that all the space people are worried about rather than a secret mystery bout space gunk which was promptly mentioned and forgotten about in the last episode. The alien manipulation should have been used as a threat dynamic making it hard to trust anyone. The AI stuff should have spent less time banging on about Ethan being a kid and more on the growth, development and acceptance of a fully functioning "learning" AI being accepted by the world at large. The show skirted around these issues but they were mostly secondary things to the Family "mah baahby" Drama.

I know it's been a long and generally uneventful career for her since "The Secret World of Alex Mack," but did they really bring in Larissa Oleynik to deliver two lines of techobabble in the finale and nothing else? That seems odd.

A second season for this show feels like a mistake creatively. That finale was a pretty solid series finale, and it seems like they told the story they set out to tell. Not sure where else they have to go.
