Hey I figured you guys would know best. I want a sampler box thing that I can bring to random free style jams. I like the beat thang because despite looking ugly as duck the workflow seems really simple. Looking for some alternatives or advice. I want to be able to load sounds on it ahead of time and not rely on a laptop to operate. Just a simple self sustaining beat machine.

The only things I've ever heard about Beat Thang have been that it's nice in theory, but the reality of it isn't that great - crashing, instability, etc. For live stuff, I know that Roland SPs have a good reputation for simplicity and hands on tweaking. The SP 404 SX is the current model and offers some practical advantages over older models (SD cards, copying and pasting patterns), but that the file compression on older models (303 and 202) gives them a sound which is preferred by some.

I watched some videos and it does what I need. I'll be doing less of a hip hop thing and more of an ambient guitar/misc ever changing jam. Right now I do a lot of ambient style looping with the guitar. Mostly trying to layer sounds and create a mood. One more question. I run a pretty simple rig and I'd like to keep it that way. Could I just grab an active monitor for the sampler and run it straight through?

So I've been doing some stuff lately. I shopped it around to friends and they all seem to think it's dope (even ones who've poo poo on my prior musical output without reservations) and they've been pushing me to show it to strangers for a little while, so I figure maybe it's time. These are 100% free for anyone else to MC over if they want (though I feel like that's a bit of a pipe dream), all I ask is that you attribute it and link back to my soundcloud if possible. e: I made them with Ableton Live 9 on a laptop without any external hardware, NI Massive, Sylenth1, and a few sample packs here and there (mostly for percussion). I kind of like Vodka Sunrise, but it's not really a hip-hop track right? I think you need to play with your levels a bit more though, some instruments clash and are too prominent over others that should drive the track (in Vodka sunrise the sample and the synth are a bit too loud).
