Pam Oliver posted:

The business is very demographic-oriented. As one executive said to me, Fox Sports will look radically different in the coming years. I assume that means they want to look younger. It’s not difficult to notice that the new on-air people there are all young, blond and “hot.” That’s not to say that Erin isn’t capable. I think she’s very capable. She’s also popular on Twitter and social media, so I can see how that would also make her highly sought after. Still, covering the NFL is a big deal. Stations like ABC and NBC entrust their programming to veterans. So when people talk about all networks making a turn to a particular type of girl on the sidelines, it doesn’t hold water.

I don't blame her for thinking that way

Tomorrow is Tony Reali's last day at PTI before he moves to New York to start contributing to GMA (while continuing to host Around the Horn from there)

Here's a tribute they posted (and the YouTube description gives a long farewell letter from Reali)

She's also at least in her mid 30s (maybe close to 40?) and has been covering sports for like 15 years now. I get that she's sort of the flag bearer for "attractive sideline white lady" but at this point is one of the most experience sideline reporters out there.

She's 36, and started with ESPN in 2004, so not exactly 15 years, but the point is still valid. She is one of the most experienced at the job. Still doesn't excuse how Fox has treated Pam Oliver.

Sure, but she didn't start at ESPN. She was covering sports prior to that.

The whole experiment was doomed from the start. I love Gus, but his specific style just doesn't work for soccer. Combine that with his obvious lack of knowledge about the sport and we had some painful broadcasts.

Fox has a lot on the line in their soccer coverage with the World Cup in 2018, next year's Women's World Cup and the Champions League every year. This is actually a good opportunity for them to start over and find a good voice. Maybe they could hire Martin Tyler, or throw the checkbook at Jon Champion who had some outstanding calls in the last World Cup.

lol it's Fox they'll just throw Joe Buck out there.

Martin Tyler's mentioned in the article, so there's that possibility. Wonder if they'll try and back the proverbial dump truck of money toward Bristol and try to poach Ian Darke.

Really, I'm glad they realized that it's not gonna work this early. You're right, Gus has the wrong style for soccer, he'll still come out pretty drat well, all things considered.

ESPN still has Euro 16 and some USMNT games, so I doubt they let Ian go without a fight. I could definitely see Tyler going to Fox, he wants to be the No. 1 voice at whatever network he goes to and didn't get that opportunity at the World Cup.

I'm an insufferable shitposter who does not deserve to root for such a good team. Also, this is what Matt Harvey thinks of me and my garbage posting.
Gus Johnson was a square peg in a round hole with soccer, but instead of poaching somebody with an English/Irish/Scottish accent can't they find somebody who calls a lot of MLS and or whatever and give them a chance? Hell, give Steve Cangialosi a shot, couldn't hurt.

I don't really follow MLS broadcasts outside the Sounders, are there any American announcers worth a drat there?

If Fox won't poach Tyler/Champion and are still serious about getting an American to be their top soccer voice, going through MLS and culling their most promising guys seems like an obvious first step. But, again, this is Fox we're dealing with, so.

(He's not American, but there is precedent here with Arlo White, who made his name calling Sounders games and went on to be NBC's No. 1 EPL guy. Hopefully there's an American White waiting in the wings at MLS.)

There used to be one American guy with an Italian last name who was pretty good. I think it was two WCs ago where ESPN decided "no English/Scots/Irish" and they had a baseball guy as their #1 (who was of course complete rear end). The guy I'm thinking of was the only good announcer who knew anything, but I've never heard from him since. Maybe the other announcers just made him look good.

I'd take that over Joe Buck. I mean I would take that edit of the announcer yelling just constantly over football/baseball instead Buck calling another game.

NFL Talk.

I think that CBS sucks at covering pro football. This isn't to say that they're not good at covering other things, and that back in the 80's they were not good at covering the NFC (Because they were good at that), but the AFC package? It's a bit of a disaster. Their commentator pairings always seem to irritate me to no end.

If things could be done over? I really wish it would have been this:

Fox with the NFC
NBC with the AFC
CBS with the Sunday Night Game

Anals of History

As it relates to maximizing quality, your idea makes sense as I'd agree that CBS isn't great and NBC is doing much better. Thing is, I wouldn't want CBS to have the SNF game either. SNF is fun because it's become the one game that everyone watches because the game's (typically) good and there's no competition. I guess I'd wish for NFC on Fox, AFC on ABC/ESPN, SNF on NBC, and CBS gets left with Thursday Night Football and absolutely nothing else.

I posted about it in the Week 1 N/V thread, but the Browns (and apparently other NFL teams) are now streaming their radio broadcasts online. For me, on Time Warner Cable, having the game air on CBS, muting the TV and listening to the radio stream is almost a perfect sync, so I get the best of both worlds. Last week, the TV feed on Fox was too far behind the radio broadcast to do that.

Generally that's the route I go (regardless of delay), but I've been watching the game with friends and they rend to not believe in doing such things.

Fox's coverage was bearable, but I think it's because Kenny Albert is decent. Spero Dedes and Solomon Wilcots? Ugh.

There might be other solutions, as well; I just spent a few seconds googling since I knew such a thing existed. There is even a physical device you can buy that can do the same for over-the-air radio.

Sports Jeopardy, hosted by Dan Patrick, debuted this week on Crackle. They'll be posting one episode a week for the next year. Well worth your 22 minutes.

http://www.crackle.com/c/sports-jeopardy

As anyone who follows me on Twitter knows, I am a huge Jeopardy nerd. I'm in the pool of contestants for this show after passing an audition in July, but I haven't gotten the call yet. I have some thoughts in spoiler tags below.

-Dan did a fine job - he just needs to drop the annoying tics of saying "continue" after a TS and "Anyone?" while we wait for the buzzer.

-Boy they sure love the NBA. More baseball questions please!

-Interviews are too long, but I suppose that's the time for "Dan to be Dan," as one of the producers has said. I liked the photos that people brought.

-Love the marching band remix of the theme.

-I said Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash for Final Jeopardy - whoops.
