Wow I'm so out of it. Took me way too long to remember the concept of a poker rate. Looks like Venetian, Bellagio, and Aria all have doable requirements that would bring a nice casino into my price range. Which would be best if I'm going to be stuck playing a lot at that particular room. Figure nl200 mostly. Maybe some limit. I miss having a dedicated poker forum...

Also any thoughts on which would be best for non poker reasons?

Leaning towards aria since they have twice daily tournaments in my price range I could also use towards the rate requirements.

Wynn or Aria. Aria is great because of location. Wynn is great because it's the Wynn. Either one is fine and both poker rooms are great.

I like MGM poker room to bottom feed on all the worst poker playing tourists, but the aria room is so much nicer. Not to mention the accommodations.

Taking the GF to Vegas for our 1 year in October. We're staying at the Bellagio for 2 nights, and then the Aria for 3 nights. I've been there twice in the past year and a half, but admittedly just to party (for EDC). This trip will be moreso about doing touristy things and admiring the sights. Likely going to be pretty light on gambling / clubbing.

She likes the idea of doing the touristy / couply activities, this is the list that I came up with (we are mid 20s):

- Go up the Eiffel tower at Paris (daytime for the view? We went to the real thing earlier this year so this sees like an obvious choice)
- Venetian Gondola Ride
- High Roller Ferris Wheel (I haven't seen too much positive buzz about this, although online reviews seem to be good)
- Shark Tank at Mandalay Bay or the Dolphins at the Mirage (either or - we both like Aquariums)
- Roller Coaster at NYNY (I'm not a fan but she loves them)
- Helicopter ride over the strip at night (seems a bit steep to me at $100 / person for 15 minutes)
- Dinner with a fountain view at the Bellagio (I'm thinking Olives, I know Picasso is the nuts but we aren't really fine dining people, we would prefer something a bit more casual)
- I was thinking of going for Paella at Julian Serrano? We have $200 resort credit for the Aria, but the restauraunts seem to be very hit/miss -
- Absinthe (this might not be her cup of tea but the rave reviews have me intrigued!)
- Open to other show suggestions, Love seems to be highly recommended

We'll likely walk through almost all of the Casinos just to take in the sights & sounds, my experience is pretty limited to the the center of the Strip, so I'm looking for a bit of advice on exploring the north and south sides. For the south side is it worth it to check out the megahotels like Excalibur, the Luxxor and the Tropicana? Or should we basically just cut it short at NYNY / MGM in terms of our exploration path? For the north side - start at the Wynn and make our way downwards (crossing at The Mirage to skip the Quad and the Flamingo?).

Eiffel Tower is meh you can skip it.
Gondola is meh but it's super cute to do as a couple, I guess
High Roller sucks unless you have the whole thing to yourself skip it
Shark Reef is cool
NYNY sucks, go to Adventure Dome at Circus Circus
Helicopter at night is awesome
Fine dining or not, it's your anniversary spring for Picasso it will be worth every penny
Jean Georges at Aria or if you can dine in the Crystal's go to Mastro's the butter cake is hands down the best dessert ever
Absinthe is incredible
MJ One is great, Beatle's Love is great, La Reve is good, my gf loves Zarkana, check to see what comedians are in town while you're here

As for exploring the strip….Mandalay is worth checking out, the City Center complex is cool and then walk down Cosmo then to Bellagio then Caesar's, cruise the Venetian/Palazzo into the Wynn/Encore and you're done. Nothing else to see. Head down to Fremont Street for some old town fun, cool bars decent food, the Downtown Container park is fun. If you have a car go to Valley of Fire or Roo's N More as well.

Okay newbie club questions here.

Girlfriend is interested in Calvin Harris at hakkasan. Only problem is that will be on that Saturday night and we're driving to LA really early on Sunday. I can survive on low sleep but I'll need at least a little. I've got a memorial service when I get in so need to be able to function. What time would he actually be going on? Trying to figure out if I'll be going to bed before 4am.

Also if we buy tickets in advance when would be a sensible time to arrive?

I got the poker rate for aria. Yay. People are surprisingly hard to get a hold of for that.

Girl also wants to hike red Rock. I'm fine with that but she wants to pay for a guided tour thing which includes a ride there and back. Something about that rubs me the wrong way. Probably because it costs about as much as that helicopter ride above. I say we just rent a car if we want to do it. Any thoughts or experiences?

That pitr thread makes me sad.

Any opinion on the neon museum? Going to be in LV all next week during weekdays and the only daytime plans I have are hoover dam and Valley of Fire. Have to take the wife to the outlet mall (north), probably will go to Pinball Museum.

Also, Roos-N-More appears to be closed according to the website?

Never Forget.
Hello! I'm going to Vegas for the first time ever in a couple weeks. I'm staying Monday to Monday, which works best for plane tickets, and I"m at the Flamingo, if that helps anything. Long story short, there's a wedding I have to go to on Thursday and Friday (Friday the plan is to go nuts), but the other days I'm on my own.

One of the problems is that I am a graduate student, so I will need internet. I don't want to pay $12/day for wireless. Is there a cool place I can sit and work for a couple hours? I can always park myself in a Starbucks or something like that. I won't need internet the whole time, just to upload my problem sets and maybe access the VPN, so I wonder if there's a bar or something where I could sit and noodle on my computer/read, also?

Second question, is there a Sigma Derby still around?

Third, so there used to be an aquarium in the neighborhood where you could hang out with otters, but it seems like it has closed? I'm blanking on the name, I have it written somewhere...

I'm planning on hitting up the Fine art at the Bellagio, but I'm not too interested in their Boston Women's painters. Do they have a regular collection or is it just the specials? Unfortunately I won't get to see the Faberges. On top of that, are there any good exhibits around? I'm not really into anything 'contemporary', but anything before the 50s 40s would be dope.

Final question, are there any good gyms I can go to? If this were a long weekend, I wouldn't give a poo poo, but a week is a long time. I've heard gyms in the hotels can be just outrageously expensive. But if there are any gyms where I can just pop in once or twice for <$10 a pop. Normally I would just go for a run, but I'm rehabbing some shin splints, so I really need an elliptical (ugh)/bike/rowing machine. A squat rack etc would be super dope, but not necessary. I may pose this question in the general fitness thread too.

I'm an American living abroad, and I'm traveling without ~my wife~ so I'm looking forward to stuffing my fat loving face, getting wasted and enjoying the attention that not giving a poo poo about women brings you.

Essentially every casino in Vegas, including the flamingo, charges a resort fee on top of the room rate. It will include internet access and I think gym access. About $20 per day.

One on the Strip can be found at the MGM Grand Las Vegas as of March 24, 2014. The other is at the D Hotel in Downtown Las Vegas

Take the tram past Luxor and Excalibur to get to Mandalay Bay and never look back. Excalibur is basically the TGI Fridays of the strip and the Luxor is a boring husk of what it once was.

If you like goofy touristy stuff, run over near Hard Rock hotel and do the Kiss mini-golf: http://www.monsterminigolf.com/kiss/
Also the pinball hall of fame is both cheap and a TON of fun: http://www.pinballmuseum.org/

Definitely hit Fremont street. It's much more fun than the strip at night - way cheaper too.

If your phone is a wireless hotspot, always use that instead. The wireless generally sucks in most hotels. And it's also not optional, it comes with the $20 resort fee someone else mentioned.

While this is true, when I stayed at the Flamingo a couple of weeks ago, booked through Hotwire, they said my resort fee was waived (and that therefore I didn't get internet in my room). Was that because the lady at the checkin liked me or gave it to me when I asked if they had any rooms to upgrade to, or is that a new thing that Hotwire is doing?

Its actually sort of strange because other rooms I booked in Vegas on other trips through Hotwire (cosmo, vdara I think) definitely charged me the resort fee when I checked out

Note that you NEED to schedule a tour with the neon museum, it's not come anytime - I've heard you also should go at night when everything's lit up (although it costs more apparently).

Hey Ma, who's that band I like? Oh yeah, Hall & Oates.
We're travelling to Vegas in February. Every time I've gone, I've never actually been to one of the pools, but it's really important to the SO that we have a hotel with a heated, active pool in February. I know most of the major hotels on the strip have a heated pool all year round, but which are the active ones? Right now we're considering Caesar's, Bellagio and the Venetian.

What's the best or the best sushi/asian restaurants in Vegas?

I'm in Venetian and went to the local one (assuming there isn't more than one, this place is huge) either way I wasn't impressed but the Noodle Asia was pretty legit. If anyone has any recommendations near the strip that would be great.

Not sure if it's just me being jet-lagged but is the Venetian geared more towards a older crowd? Everyone has quite a few years on me which is fine but if I ever came here for fun I'd pick a different hotel.

EDIT - Re-read the thread, I think I know where good Sushi is...

He doesn't really stop the puck, but he scares the hell out of the other team.
Kabuto is the best sushi for sure, even with the head chef gone elsewhere, and isn't too terribly far from the strip.

I'm also a sucker for Sen of Japan for less traditional, more face-punch-flavor sushi, but it's way out west.

I'm sure some of the popular sushi places on the strip like Nobu are great, but I don't stray to the strip for food unless I feel like burning money for something top tier (Picasso, L'Atelier, Jaleo, etc.)

edit: I don't know if anyone has mentioned Chada Thai in this thread yet. For my money, more dishes than not are better there than Lotus of Siam. Lotus still does some stuff better. It helps that Chada's cheaper, open late, closer to where I live, and much less crowded. The less crowded part probably won't stay true for too long given how good and small the place is.

Discount requires five hours of play per day. You can do it all in one day or however you like. I think I'd done most my hours halfway through my four night stay. Playing a tournament counts for five hours. Everyone in the room counts towards the hours.

Tournaments are $125 and allow one rebut. They run twice per day. Format is very slow. Was taking about 8 hours to finish the 1pm ones. I think it was usually 60-80 people for the 1pm. Less for the 7pm.

Rate is 120 for a weekday which is okay and 160 for weekend nights which is pretty good. That's before resort fee and tax though.

trip report:

Aria is very nice. Would stay again. Poker room was good. Always had 1-3 going, players were okay. Some good. Some bad. Most in the middle. I made about $400 in 13 hours of play without getting many good hands. My biggest wins were all off one pair.

Breakfast buffet is $20 and well worth the money.

Pool was okay. Would be nice if there was a deeper part or some interesting features. Drink service by the pool is sloooooow. What idiot runs these things? At these drink prices you should have a million servers pushing drinks on people.

"Love" was awesome. I've seen Mystere and Zumanity and liked this the most. Just really really fun. Almost saw absinthe instead but Love is pretty cheap right now. Ended up being exactly what we were looking for. Don't get the very cheapest seats. We were about halfway up which is the good part of the next cheapest group of tickets (row N) and these ended up being fantastic seats. I think if you're too close or too far you'll miss out on parts of the show.

We liked the noodle place in Paris, China Poblano in Cosmo (too expensive though), and the burger place next to it. Bachannal was a little disappointing. Liked it better last year. Wanted to try the Wynn but others didn't want to go that far.

Had my first time getting rained on in Vegas. Forgot to spend my comp dollars. The car rental place is very quick. Cabs in Vegas suck. Clubs are not my thing. Might return if we had a table but probably not. Downtown is gross and wonderful. I love this city and how to be back in December.

Thanks for the info, yah that's a pretty decent discount. At MGM properties (even the luxor) I've always had to put in 100/hand for quite a few hours a day to get the free room/buffet email offers on the next trip, and they still wouldn't comp me anything on the first trip on checkout.

What are some of the best bars on the strip that provide somewhat of a club-like atmosphere? By club-like, I don’t necessarily mean loud DJs and lights, but like a fun, modern place with lots of 20/30 somethings NOT packed liked sardines. I’ve only been to Vegas once so The Chandelier at Cosmo is what comes to mind, for example, but I'll listen to any recommendations.

I’m going Halloween weekend but paying $50 to stand in line for hours at the clubs doesn’t seem very appealing to me, especially on Friday the 31st.

Isn't that pretty much the total opposite of "club-like"? :d

I'm glad someone mentioned resort fees - this is something completely not obvious and definitely changes the math on the cheaper rooms - looks like The D and Downtown Grand are out and El Cortex is in consideration.:(

I was in Vegas for IBM Enterprise 2014 and my first time actually in the city. I'm pretty introverted, took one too many statistics classes in college which eliminates most enjoyment you'd get out slot machines although poker is an exception.

Even if you're not gambling it's still a fun place. The shows, food, events are extraordinarily well done. Even the small indie bands you've never heard of playing at the small casino bars are very talented. You also have museums, car shows, all sorts of random events, etc

Don't even dare set foot in this town without money or if you're impulsive. This place will rob you blind - leave the ATM Card in the hotel room. I'd budget at least grand for a few days but more is way better. Granted, you can get a little creative pre-game in your hotel room, play slots for free drinks but expect a minimum of $10 a drink and more in actual clubs. If you have a group of good looking female friends, this equals instant and free access to any club.

That all said, Vegas is the place where you instantly become modern royalty. With nearly everyone on vacation it's brings out a great vibe out everyone. I almost thinks this was even the best part but a different part of me sees the bad side. You can say all you want about how energy efficient the casino lighting is but that doesn't change the fact I'm flying half-way across the country to a city in a desert where AC is blasting 24/7 and the local economy is based upon people slowly being con'd out of their money.

I'm sure Vegas will be around for the next few decades but who knows what'll happen after but I'm going to enjoy the fun while it lasts.

I sort of get what you're saying and I wish there was a better resource for this. I stayed at the Venetian and while it's a nice place it's not necessarily geared towards 20-30s. Most of the guests are "old money". Hopefully, someone who's been to Vegas could chime in here...

They are all secret. You have to know about them to get in. I like the lobby bar at the Mandarin. drei's is supposed to be pretty cool too, but then again I drink old man drinks.

Are you staying at Cosmo? Cause you'll get into the club there for free. I was there for 3 nights last time, and 2 of the nights we'd already been downtown at some bars (Laundry Room, Griffin) and decided to have our nightcap at Marquee. And it was fun. And free (to get in)!

McFadden's, Twin Peaks, Tilted Kilt, Stoney's, Lily, Carnival Court, literally anywhere on Fremont St.

Ask yourself, do you really want to talk to pair of really nice gaudy shoes?

Is this unique to the Cosmo? I've only stayed in Vegas once but I keep hearing that most clubs have a cover if you're just a random dude.

If you're a random dude, yep. Totally gotta pay cover unless you know somebody or have hot chicks with you. But if you're a guest there at the hotel, your cover is generally comped. They asked us to pay the second night, but then changed their minds at the register.

Kind of an odd question, but here goes . . . I'm going to be in Vegas next weekend. One of the reasons I'm going is photography. I know there's plenty of stuff/people to photograph along the strip, but I may rent a car and drive around a bit to photograph abandoned stuff. Are there any good half-built but basically abandoned subdivisions in or near Vegas that would be fun to explore and take pictures of? To give you an idea of distance I am willing to travel, I'll probably drive out to Nelson.
