Also, i am eagerly awaiting more Vriskatime; the only thing that makes Homestuck bearable.

Hussie has a sense of visual storytelling, but it seems putting it all into motion outside of a gif makes him stumble a bit. And when you add to that the fact that the flashes largely eschew expository text, his main crutch, it does make them hard to follow. In large part this is compensated for by the format (you can rewatch immediately to see what you may have missed) and the medium (you have a fanbase over in your other browser tab collectively working to untangle the narrative), but those are, again, a sort of extension of the general inability of the visuals to clearly communicate. I was thinking of this recently as I remembered when he had to explain (on Tumblr? jeez remember when he did that) how Caliborn and Calliope's kernelsprites prototyped each other and made a black hole via a feedback loop, because otherwise it looked like Caliborn just had one kernelsprite flashing red and green that became a black hole for apparently no reason. It's very easy to conceive of a few shots that would have made this clearer: the kernelsprites emerge from the Cruxtruder and separate, so there are clearly two, then we see them snap back together and begin their flashy bullshit singularity show. Now, apart from the possibility that Hussie didn't think of this, he is at least working within the confines of the length of the song, what else he knows he has to show the viewer, and his own command of flash. So while I personally do enjoy the flashes, I also feel like a lot of the time they would be improved if he had a consultant or someone who could help him storyboard things, if not help him animate to keep him from cutting corners.

Do cosplayers count as new fans? I've not looked into it much, but one of my coworkers is a huge fan of Dangan Ronpa and is constantly talking about how only like 10% of the fanbase actually observes the media.

Hussie has approached the medium of animation from far outside the traditionally established vocabulary of animation, specifically in order to take advantage of the web format. It's mostly an effort-saving measure since he's only one man, but it has resulted in some extremely innovative sequences. Homestuck animations usually consist of some simple tweens applied to what could have been static panels, but it's their editing that makes them more sophisticated than what the Brothers Chaps were doing in 2004.

I still think it's cool that Dave Sim happened again, only with a webcomic this time, and Gerhard did even more work and was actually like several thousand people working for free instead of one german guy this time. And instead of becoming a pariah and a hated pseudointellectual "crazy" person, he succeeded this time, because of the "gamer/anime" niche, and made millions of dollars. And was named Andrew Hussie and hated black people instead of being named Dave Sim and hating women. And

Under the vegetable posted:You guys who are complaining about the way Hussie's telling the story might not be aware, but this is basically webcomics' Ulysses, and the experimental aspects are a fundamental part of the complete experience. I try to stay away from the fanbase of Homestuck because a majority seem to view it as "just another good comic" to swoon over and write porno about, but jeez, guys, you're reading a historical literary event as it happens. How do you even enjoy this comic without realizing that? You don't know how to tell a story better than Andrew Hussie! If you think it can be a tale told "better", you're pretty much wrong. On every level, even. It's his story, and it's told in a way that is unequivocally his. This poo poo is insanely fantastic and it's a goddamn miracle in itself that something this arcane has acquired the fanbase it has, but the more people like the folks I see arguing keep arguing about what parts are "good" and what parts "aren't" the more I wonder if they even read the loving thing.

But a comparison to Dave Sim based on that is new to me and seems hyperbolic. Bongo Bill fucked around with this message at 05:03 on Sep 29, 2014 |

Under the vegetable, I have honestly considered whether Homestuck might end up in the history of literature, for the creative use of the medium if nothing else, but jeez you sound like an rear end in a top hat and an half.

I know I'm a little late to this conversation from last page, but I could never bring myself to hate Eridan as much as everyone else. If anything I think I pity him more than anything. Yes, he is a raging rear end in a top hat who will try to desperately molest any living body he can get near, but the few times when he tried to actually be a decent person he was always immediately shot down. And it's usually after those moments when he acts the worst. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I don't kno if he's an unbelievable shitlord because he's always being dismissed or if he's always being dismissed because he was an unbelievable shitlord from the start. I know the obvious answer is the latter, but I guess I think the former would make for a more compelling narrative? I dunno. Lord help me, I'm writing about Homestuck again. -EDIT- Someone photoshop ronpaulitshapoening.gif and put sad downs over his face. Then post it on every page. There will apparently be a grand total of six acts worth of Homosuck. The last update was immediately before the beginning of the third one, so Caliborn will be narrating for us when we return. Things will probably go way off the rails in the fifth one and completely break down in the sixth, whose conclusion will likely be the climax of the story. In one of those, he will probably be using some of the techniques described in More How to Draw Manga: Vol. 1, which no doubt we're all eagerly looking forward to.

I doubt we'll have to wait that long. I figure thing'll start breaking down in act three (the act we're about to see). John has already shown up after all and his pretty pissed about being buried under a pile of bogus Dave's.

John being trapped under that pile is why he was unable to intervene during the huge clusterfuck of a fight that was the second intermission. Act 6 Act 6 is a contest between John and Caliborn, with nothing less than the story itself at stake. Fittingly, neither of them knows this. They're both pretty slow on the uptake, so they'll need a few more demonstrations before they stop playing it by ear. All that special stardust Caliborn poured into the expansion pak had the effect of disorienting the kids, but John showed that he was able to change events (including undoing his own prior changes). In intermission 1, he was just trying to keep things more or less "on track," but in intermission 2, without the leader of the group, the situation deteriorated into utter chaos. Several more enemies have just, or are about to, burst onto the scene, and the events of the next act will foreshadow the influence John can have on the following intermission. Which, in turn, will be the most important determinant of how well things go in the fight.
