I wasn't speaking about actual reality. The very next line that comes after the part you quoted clearly stated the point is "the illusion of reality". It's a construct we buy into.

Yeah, but how much of that construct is the camera responsible for, end of the day? How many home movies of you as a baby do you have that look much worse than anything that's come from Mann? You almost certainly don't remember shooting them, but you buy into them as real all the same.

It's not just the visual aesthetic that sells the "reality" of a film. It works in tandem with the acting, the writing, and the overall context of the viewer's world. Mann's modern aesthetic is what it is, and you're free to dislike it.* But I see it as an effective, if outside-the-box way to convey immediacy: the lack of lighting rigs forcing up the gain gives me the impression of an on-the-fly shot, and the urgency involved in capturing it reverberates back to the story.

(*On that note, I apologize; I never had any intention of arguing that his films are secretly beautiful and you're an idiot for not seeing it, and I hope I don't come off that way.)

Sure, it's totally subjective. I know other people are totally fine with it,since the man is still making movies. And I don't mean the aesthetic totally ruins the immersion, obviously the other aspects of the production still exist. I guess the bottom line is that it tips the scales too far for me.

It might be because I keep expecting Josh Gad to overact, but he's the straight man so it's throwing my expectations off.

How is this not a sequel to http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0267891/?ref_=nv_sr_1 ?

Ryan Reynolds playing the serious man in that in-laws remake worked pretty well. You could tell Michael Douglas was having a lot of fun there.

Judging from the fact that according to the film the process involves jailing cackling skull and crossbones, and ends in success when they make it to the Twilight Zone opening I'm gonna lean more towards "openly did not give a rat's rear end."

edit: The best part of that sequence is that the way it's edited implies that anytime anyone gets an "ACCESS DENIED" message it's because some poor stooge on the other end is literally just typing in "ACCESS DENIED."

A fourth "Interstellar" trailer just hit. This one dovetails with tickets going on sale. The movie will be released two days early (November 5) in IMAX 70mm, 70mm, and 35mm. If you can (and it'll be worth a few hours driving), I highly, highly recommend seeing the movie in IMAX 70mm as Nolan uses that format extraordinarily well, and supposedly about 2/3rds of the movie is shot that way.

That trailer took me by surprised because I thought it was going to be another Gladiator or Robin Hood and go for a "realistic approach" and then suddenly the trailer has 2 armies running towards each other while an ocean comes in from one sides and there are a ton of tornadoes moving around in the background.

Did you even read the first part of what I said?

e: there is a trend of reinterpreting myths and religious stories in movies lately where they tone down stuff painting them more as "realistic", a trend Ridley actually recently took part with in the making of Robin Hood. I am well aware of the parting of the dead sea, and I didn't think he would omit that. That is why I put realistic in quotes. Because instead of trying to go in the "tone it down direction" he went in the full blown "crazy visual" direction.

Yes, but there's nothing supernatural about the story of Robin Hood. It'd be like if Ridley Scott did a Peter Pan movie and you were surprised that he could fly. I'm just struggling with what you mean by "realistic" in this sense. What would the ten plagues even look like? A series of increasingly incredible coincidences that were altogether not that remarkable? A few frogs in the garden and a couple of dead sons?

You can take a supernatural thing and try to make it look "realistic", and a lot of movies try and again its a trend. What surprised me was Ridley decided no, I am just going to make this look as cool as possible.

Also your Peter Pan analogy is terrible.
