Nokia 630 3 month report: I am quite surprised with my last three months of use with the Nokia. For one thing, I never thought I would be pleased about the battery life of a sub 2a phone, but as much as I use the thing I've yet to get anywhere close to draining it fully in a day. I browse the web a lot, use it's loudspeaker for podcasts, and it keeps chugging along. I'm particularly surprised by how loud the speaker is in particular. I don't do music, but for podcasts a lot are recorded very quiet and have to cranked up. The ability to throw apps on the SD card is great. The screen colors could be much better and it's resolution is 'noticeable' in the sense that you will immediately realize it's not 720p or greater, but that's pretty forgivable for the $0 price from cricket. It does need to "resume" apps if I start switching from app to app too fast but any background apps (like podcasts) continue uninhibited. Call quality is pretty good and I've never had any reception issues. Unfortunately there are some apps I need that the windows platform does not have and I have to switch, but I doubt I will be selling the 630 if only to keep it as a back up. If you had a young child who needed a phone I would recommend it highly. It can take a beating and the battery life is pretty great.

My poor white Icon fell out of my pocket in our driveway right onto the pavement face-first and will hardly show anything on the screen or respond to any touch feedback despite having a small crack in the lower-left corner of the screen. At least we had Verizon's insurance, I guess, only on top of paying the $99 deductible, they didn't have any white phones and can only get me a refurbished black phone on Tuesday the earliest. God loving drat it. At least I had all of the backup services on so everything will come back once I login to my Microsoft account. Lesson learned: Get an Otterbox for it ASAP. This feather shell case isn't going to cut it anymore now that I'm going to be paranoid about cracking my screen again.

Something new is happening to my 1520. Randomly, my home screen will start scrolling around on its own, sometimes it launches an app, the screen becomes unresponsive, and the only way to stop it is to restart the phone. Good news is that the camera stop randomly launching. Is my phone broken?

I swear I'd read somewhere that this was a (not really common, but not really rare) digitizer problem with the 1520. It can absolutely gently caress you if your phone is set to wipe itself after failed PIN attempts. You'll pull the phone out of your pocket and see the spinning gears as it hard resets. I've never seen anyone online post a fix for it aside from some suggestions about lowering the screen sensitivity (but that doesn't always help); you might have to just get the phone replaced. Edit: Not sure if this is you, but someone on reddit JUST brought up the issue here, so you can follow the thread to see if anything worthwhile gets posted: http://www.reddit.com/r/windowsphone/comments/2hqzdr/touchscreen_issue_is_rendering_my_phone_unusable/ LentThem fucked around with this message at 03:34 on Sep 29, 2014 |

My only explanation was that the digitizer was separating from the phone near the bottom which happened with my old 2012 nexus 7. My phone was still under warranty (yours should be too I think since the warranty is one year) so I took it down to the Microsoft store and they replaced it no questions asked. I of course later broke the replacement by dropping something on it. I really miss the 1520. I'm currently using a lumia 1020. It's great but if anyone wants to trade me straight up for a 1520 I would do it.

I'll give an addendum to this post, because I'm at 1 month with an att 635 and I kinda want to bitch about it.mugrim posted:Nokia 630 3 month report: This is true for mine, as well. At least it gets bright enough that i can use it outside with sunglasses on. My first unit would always fully restart every application with no state resume if I switched away from it for even a few seconds, this problem continued even after a hard reset... quote:Call quality is pretty good and I've never had any reception issues. ...as did the missed calls and failure of the ringer to execute. So I sent it back to Nokia and got a replacement. So far no inexplicable missed calls, and it can keep my place in eg Podcasts for a more reasonable amount of time and allow for me to resume from where i left off. It's just too bad that media playback still sometimes shits the bed until I reboot the phone, and I'll randomly get a warning that I "shouldn't remove the SD card while the phone is on" even though I'd have to remove the battery to take out the card (this also makes every app on the phone stop working until I've rebooted). I guess it just stops reading my card sometimes. I don't know if this is the phone's fault or the card's. quote:Unfortunately there are some apps I need that the windows platform does not have and I have to switch, but I doubt I will be selling the 630 if only to keep it as a back up. I'm going to hold on to mine, too. On paper, the features you get for the price seems like a decent deal. If only the phone was stable and reliable. And had a decent instagram app. And a decent tumblr app. And could do predictive/self-correcting type as well as my old iphone. (although it does have swipe - I guess I'm just old-fashioned) quote:
Plus you get to teach your kid about how to deal with malfunctioning programs and follow troubleshooting guides. And texting on it is very good typing practice, because it only autocorrects a very small number of common mistakes. (for example, I'm posting from my 635 and I've probably typed out phobe like 10 times. Only once has it been autocorrected to phone.)

But I turn it off and it works just fine. Before that though I was having all of the issues you had and had to just get my phone replaced. But turning off double tap to see how that works plus the link someone posted above is worth a shot first.

Basically yeah, as far as I know, they use Jen Taylor for what they can*, which includes any of the pre-planned dialogue (e.g. "tell me a joke"). Everything else, it's the speech synthesis designed to sound as close to Jen Taylor as possible. *Unless you're in the UK and get Posh Cortana instead, presumably other countries have their own version too.

Weirdly enough this was a change in some patch. 2 years ago WP corrected your typing far more aggressively. I am unsure when it was changed, and even more unsure *why*. Just Swype in English though, the implementation is excellent. Doesn't help us with other native languages though.

Arguably a war criminal "What is a Halo?" A few different canned responses here. Best one so far: story of an AI who saves the day with her silent sidekick

This phone really sucks. The Nokia Lumia 635 has options that set themselves and has problems ending calls. I turned off WiFi calling in the options, but my phone still uses it exclusively, and anytime I try to end a call using wifi calling it hangs up on the ending call screen. No amount of mashing end call will fix it, and I'm reduced to restarting the phone. Should have stuck with the iPhone

So I'm guessing having your Start screen, IE bookmarks, and apps restored after signing into your Microsoft account is only an 8.1 thing? I've always had backup running on my old phone, but when I signed into my replacement phone I got today...nothing. Yet, all my text messages synced back, which makes it even more bizarre. And an extra special gently caress You to Verizon's backup assistant. Every time I try to start it, it spits out a PIN in a text message but always says "Sorry, there was a problem accessing Backup Assistant Plus." Useless. Thank God I backed up my contacts to Outlook as well. Edit: I did a phone reset on a whim and re-signed into my Microsoft account. It found my backup. All of my settings, bookmarks, apps, and contacts are back, but my Start screen isn't back to the way it was. Close enough. I was really dreading trying to restore all of that poo poo. I guess I shouldn't have made the dumb mistake of trying to set up my phone without putting in the SIM card first, but I was in a hurry out the door when UPS stopped by. I don't understand how that is going to work with the chipsets. We now have 8.1 RT/WP for ARM and 8.1 for intel. Will we get a 10RT which will run on Phones and Tablets? On the bright side, that's one OS less.

There already is Windows 8/8.1 on ARM, it's Windows RT. I wouldn't be surprised to see Windows 10 on ARM, which is now the OS used for phones, Surface Mini, and 8" and less devices.

I am at my wits end with the podcast support on this system. It never auto downloads over wifi like it used to. It loses my place when resuming a podcast.
